Chapter 1 - Visiting The Dentist
A/N: Sorry I took so long. I got writer's block about half way through the chapter and it really threw me off. But I hope you guys enjoy this one and I'll see you in the next one!
Summer Holidays were a fun, joyful and relaxing time for students. Their time away from schools, to empty out their brains of anything worthwhile and plug it full of useless junk that no one cared, nor bothered about.
Yet, here Y/N was. Not even close to fitting those things. Though, he had to admit that he was... intrigued by the shifts and changes in his life, well some of them at least.
It had been a month since the trip to Spain. Now reaching into mid to late August, things had begun to change. Drastic changes that began to alter Y/N in more ways than most. For one, his connection, or spiritual, or whatever it was, with Fenrir was only increasing. So much that his alter side was beginning to affect him in his human form.
Such as, sense of smell for example. During the wolf form, that thankfully hadn't opened up for him in a while. Had begun to manifest itself into him as well. Which, Y/N wasn't sure if he liked because he could pick out practically any smell at any time. Not to mention he could pick up on others.
And by that, it meant other people's emotion. Like a predator scoping out there prey, weighing out their mannerism. He could smell and sense things from his father he would normally not detest.
For Y/N. It was weird, very, very weird.
And, even more, he had seen an increase in his eyesight and vision as well. Being able to see from further away, that was actually a bonus to him. And among other things, like strength and endurance, though he admitted not much of that had affected him, only while in wolf form. But it was beneficial to have greater smell and eyesight when not in a blinding rage.
In other news. His... relationship? Friendship? No, coexistence? Yeah, that sounds about right. Was, surprisingly at a standstill. Nothing had progressed, yet it hadn't been discouraged.
The two were fine together, for the most part.
Though Y/N had found Fenrir to be quite annoying at times, and vice versa. But Fenrir had argued that he was a part of him, like a part of him was built from Y/N himself.
So when he complained about him being too much to handle, the unworldly spirit had excused that he was practically his other half.
And that he should be treated as such, and not blame him, but himself for how annoying and unbearable he was.
'Cheeky bastard.'
But apart from that, they were on okay terms. There were questions he wanted to ask him. About where he came from, what he was exactly, and why the fuck had he chosen him.
But it wasn't hard to figure that one out. He had been told that his mother had also had the same affliction. Funnily, Fenrir had berated him for calling him an ailing or affliction and demanded to be classed as a living person.
But was he that?
They were both sharing the same bloody body. Well, Fenrir was more likely hiding in his body, he had no control over Y/N except with his powers... right?
Either way, things were looking good... for that part anyway.
The other part... that was strange. Strange for both him and anyone who knew him.
Since the attacks last year and the start of him releasing Fenrir; getting his wicked/dangerous powers. His father had booked time away and had promised (I know right?) that he would stay behind more this year and to help him.
Shockingly, he had yet to break it. And by now, it looked like he was actually keeping it. But the two of them were still in a rocky situation. There was tension between the two, though not as much as it was previously.
But in good news, Daniel stayed behind to help him out. To teach him, help him control his new affliction — powers. Though he had confessed that there was only so much he could do. Y/N would need more help. For that, Dumbledore had sent the boy a letter confirming that a new teacher coming to Hogwarts would be assisting him. That much, Y/N was grateful for.
But for now, he was stuck with his father helping. And he didn't know how to feel about that. A part of him was glad to finally have him giving him a helping hand, yet the other part of him couldn't necessarily believe it, and found it rather weird. But, he wasn't about to say anything, as long as he was helping him control his new found friend.
But for what those lessons deemed. Were another thing altogether. For the most part, it helped control the mind. A strong mental connection ensured a good connection to Fenrir himself, and the powers that Y/N so feared.
Yes, he wasn't afraid to admit it. The powers (as awesome as they were) scared him, and both confused him even more. When he first activated it, it was surreal. The feelings of anger, hate, passion and hunger had begun to take him over at that moment. All his feral and base instincts guided him with a thirsty vengeance that only blood, whatever the kind may be, desired. And that hunger, that dreading yet sweet lust for it, scared him. And so he made it his top priority to keep it in check, and it was going okay... at first.
Yeah, the first days when he got back. It didn't end, nor start, well. It began with waking up in the morning, his bedsheets covered in blood, his mouth content with the once metallic flavour of red, now sweet like honey. It was almost addictive, toxicating even. And remains of whatever he had eaten. Thankfully, it was nothing serious, well nothing human or domestic that's for sure.
One morning he had woken up and swore he had eaten Midnight in his sleep. But luckily, the black sheared hair did not belong to his pet cat. Luckily, no. It was probably best not to find out. But as the weeks passed, the horrid and scared mornings began to weaver and it now rarely happened... as much.
Y/N had asked Fenrir about it. And of course, he had denied it at first. But when you threaten to harm the very soul in which you inhabit, the soul catcher will say anything. He had explained that the beast craved blood. His father, who was highly concerned when he found it out. Also had more to say concerning what had happened to him in the chamber.
That there was more to a soul occupying his body. In the ancient times, and even now. Rare occurrences happened. Lost souls and deathly ghosts could take over a person, almost like a possession. But not exactly, the spirit, or entity could choose to latch onto a person. To drain them, consume them of their energy. But every time that would happen, it would leave the very person criminally insane. But fortunately, it didn't affect him like that. But still, he worried.
'Great... can this get any worse?'
Famous last words.
With everything going on. His father had also been teaching him to fight with his wand more. The many defensive and offensive charms that could be used to defeat other wizards and witches. And that it would be ideal for him to get used to them, as he expected this year would be more hands on than Lockhart's duelling club. Something Y/N was looking excitingly forward to.
But like everything else, things just wouldn't be that easy. Though, when was it ever easy for them?
For the fifth time that day of trying out spells, this one was the worst. What was supposed to be a simply disarming spell of expelliarmus and bright red light. Ended up being more than Y/N bargained for.
"Expelliarmus!" Daniel roared, his wand in hand as Y/N prepared to counter it, and immediately a jet of red light flashed out. But it seems he put too much into and before Y/N could stop it, the bright light hit him and sent him flying face backwards into the living room wall and slugging to the ground in a painful heap.
"Y/N!" Daniel shouted as he rushed up to his son, rolling him to check him.
With a groan, Y/N opened up his eyes to see his father looking over him. Concern and worry in his eyes, if he wasn't in such aching, he would've laughed.
"You know. When I said hit me, I didn't mean throttle me across the whole goddamn room." Y/N grimaced as his father kneeled by him and pulled him up slowly and gently. "God that was a page turner."
"Sorry." Daniel wore a sheepish look. He obviously hadn't meant to put so much into it. "You alright?"
"Are you seriously asking me that?" Y/N almost laughed at the look on his face. But as he went to move his jaw he felt pain grip him. Grimacing, he lifted a finger up to his mouth and felt around to the back, only to bring back to reveal a slight tang of blood.
'Wonderful. I must say, wonderful display.' Fenrir drawled in sarcastically as he clapped. Standing off to the side as he leant against a door frame.
"Think I've broken a tooth." Y/N grimaced. He looked back up at his father who had a steeled expression. "Don't suppose you got me dental insurance before I was born?"
—
Here he was. In southeast London, sitting in a packed British dentist. Waiting for an appointment. (which they had barely managed to get) The two were sat in rather bland plastic chairs of the waiting room, a tv just before them, nothing but weather news. Rain and more rain, typical.
Y/N looked around the place, and observed the people. They were mostly either young or elderly. All waiting for their respected dentist. He looked to his left to see his father watching the tv motionless, almost stuck in his own head as much as he was. So Y/N decided to break the ice, since he had already broken the tooth.
"So..." He said, breaking Daniel away from his brooding, and the man turned to face him with a curious look. "I'm assuming we're crossing abuse and wizarding spells off the list for reasons I broke the tooth."
And Daniel scoffed. Abuse? Hardly, he was clearly joking.
"Just tell them you broke it playing football." Daniel muttered as he turned his attention back to the tv, it was now turned to some silly documentary.
At that, Y/N scoffed. "I've never played football..."
"You're not missing much." Daniel huffed back, crossing his arms over his chest.
"Too bad I'm not visiting a wizarding dentist. Could have blamed it on Quidditch." Y/N though aloud. Turning his attention towards the reception.
Daniel huffed in a laugh, before turning to his son. "Yeah, then you'd have an excuse for your flying."
'Huh? Hold up!'
Y/N narrowed his eyes at his father. "What's that supposed to mean?" He asked with a pointed look.
He wasn't bad at Quidditch. Obviously not as good as Harry to be a Seeker. But definitely enough to control and guide the Quaffle. But control was his best skill set in the game.
Daniel was only teasing him, to an extent.
Daniel shrugged, a tight lined grin across his face. "It seems a bit wonky from what I've seen, you tether a bit slow, especially when the other chasers are about-"
"Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah." Y/N interrupted him suddenly. "Okay got it Quidditch coach sir, won't happen again, sir." He mocked a sort of salute. Before turning away and muttering under his breath. "Arse."
"How are you doing at Quidditch anyway? Heard you guys didn't fare well with Lockhart at your backside constantly." Daniel asked him curiously after a moment of silence.
Y/N rolled his eyes. "Don't even get me started on him." He huffed. "Yeah, Lockhart wasn't any good. Surprised the guy could even hold a wand properly." He turned to face his father. "What's with the questions?"
Daniel shrugged again. "Can't I ask my son questions?"
"Yeah." Y/N nodded, trying not to frown. "But it's weird, how normal it sounds."
"You should know by now. Nothing's normal about any of this."
"True." Y/N whistled, trying to distract himself.
"So what happened to him anyway, Lockhart I mean?" Daniel asked him, uncrossing his arms as he watched another set of people walk out of the operating room and another enter in.
Y/N chuckled slightly. "Dumbledore sent him home the next day. Put him in a taxi. They say he drove him for hours before they finally reached somewhere that could help him."
"He must've been confused and upset at the turn of events, at the end of the day." Daniel commented, switching his gaze back to the tv.
"Well you can't blame him." Y/N started. Seeing a kid and a mother walk out of another room guided by another dentist. "It's hard enough driving around London without picking up bloody lunatics as well." Causing the two males to chuckle but each for different meanings.
"I meant Lockhart."
"Oh," Y/N shrugged. "Well, anyway. I'm surprised we didn't see any new headlines in the news the next day." He used air quotes. "Taxi-man fucking hangs himself." Daniel smacked him over the head to stop him.
Luckily no one had paid attention enough to hear him. And luckily, saved by the bell. it was his turn.
"Y/N-Black-L/N!" A middle-aged man with short brown hair and brown eyes, with a familiar last name tag, called out his full
name and the two jumped out of their seats.
Y/N merely grumbled, as the man led them through a set of hallways. He wasn't a fan of the dentist, who was?
Nobody.
They stopped at the end of the hallway and the man led them into a reasonable looking room. Enough to house a small group of people. The usual dentist equipment and chair in the middle. Along with a middle-aged woman with dark brown hair and green eyes. A kind smile on her face as she sat at a desk opposite of them.
"And how are we doing today?" The woman asked as Y/N sat down on the leather bound chair, while his father leant against the door frame, watching them closely.
"Well," Y/N started, easing his back up against the not-so-comfortable chair. "I'm at the dentist so I would say, not very good." The near fourteen-year-old huffed.
The older woman chuckled lightly before making her way around to get a better look
at him. Sitting down in a chair next to him. Slipping on a pair of lactic gloves. "Don't you worry." She soothed, trying to calm him.
It did nothing to reassure him.
"I'll be in and out before you know it."
"Sounds like my love life..." Daniel huffed as he crossed his arms over, leaning more firmly on the door frame.
Y/N opened up to retort, just before the dentist went about shoving tools of torture into his gums and teeth. "What love life?" He bristled.
And before anymore words could be exchanged, the dentist began her search.
It didn't take long. Fifteen minutes at most to find out what was wrong. Obviously he had only chipped a tooth. Luckily, it wasn't a too revealing one so nobody would notice, and not as bad as it could be. So only a filling was needed. After another twenty minutes, they were finished. Yet, Y/N gums were numb as all hell and it just felt wrong. But he shrugged it away, as the dentist pulled back from diving through his mouth with horrid equipment that Y/N could barely put a name to.
"Well, everything seems to be in working order now." The woman explained, dumping her gloves into a nearby bin, and switching her gaze to look at Y/N with a sweet look. "Maybe next time, be more careful." She advised, to which Y/N grumbled.
"I'll keep that in mind, miss...?"
"Mrs." She corrected with a look. "Granger." She announced and Y/N felt like he had missed something. His eyes lit up like a light bulb and his brows furrowed high. Really? Hermione's mother. How had he not noticed?
Better yet, how had his father not noticed either? Possibly he hadn't formerly or actually met them yet, he couldn't remember ever introducing his father to them.
"It's good to see you again, Y/N."
And he immediately flustered, a great deal of embarrassment overflowing him like a tidal wave. He looked over to his father who wore something of a similar expression, but guarded it merely seconds later.
"Oh... I'm so sorry." Y/N said in a small voice, a nervous chuckle following. "I hardly... recognized you."
Truthfully, he had only seen Hermione's parents once so he couldn't be blamed. Yet he felt guilty for it.
"It's no bother." Monica Granger said, her smile never leaving her features. "It happens to the best of us." That it did. Though it didn't make him feel any less guilty than before.
She turned her attention towards Daniel, who shifted under the weight of her gaze. "I don't think we've had the pleasure of a proper introduction before."
Obviously referring back to Diagon Alley. Of course they had met in passing, but neither had more than a few words to spare.
"I'm Monica, Hermione's mother." She held her hand out to the older male who looked uncomfortable in the situation, to which Y/N raised an eyebrow at.
"Daniel." He introduced himself warily, shaking her hand with a soft but firm grip. "Nice to meet you..."
"Likewise." Monica smiled and turned back to Y/N. "You know," She began. "Hermione's been asking about inviting you 'round for dinner one evening." At that, Y/N's eyebrows did a lift off. Monica took notice of it, and smiled sweetly again. "Apparently, she can't help but bring it up all the time."
Y/N's neck began to heat up, his cheeks showing a light tint of red. She wanted to see him? Why? Did she want to talk with him, about what? Or was it just a simple social talk of friends? For some reason, the very thought of being close to Hermione left him in a daze. For more reasons than just being like a hormonal teenager.
Monica Granger broke her content gaze with Y/N and looked at his father. "You'd be more than welcome to join us as well." She offered, getting out her chair to stand, in doing so the others followed.
Daniel looked at her with a slight nervous gaze. "Oh no- We wouldn't want to impose."
"Nonsense, you wouldn't be imposing at all. Quite the opposite actually. We'd love to have you both 'round." She turned to smile at Y/N and teased him, causing him to heat up even more. "I know Hermione would."
Y/N nervously chuckled and rubbed at the back of his neck. All the while, Fenrir was watching with complete amusement. Sitting down on the dentist chair Y/N had the unfortunate time of using, and crossed his arms over.
"If you're sure...?" Y/N said, ignoring the amusing gaze of Fenrir.
"Yes, really." Mrs. Granger said. "It'll be our treat."
Y/N shared a somewhat indifferent look with his father. Daniel looked back at Monica. "Then... Of course. We'd be honoured to." He gave a small smile, that vanished as soon as it came to. Which Y/N found amusing. His dad hardly ever smiled.
They would come over to the Granger household later around six. The two had mixed feelings about it if they were being honest. Of course, Y/N wanted to see Hermione, but still he felt slightly panicked at seeing her again. Definitely after everything that had happened, and was still happening.
The two L/N's then exited the room after bidding Mrs Granger goodbye.
They then turned a corner, passing a hallway. "This should be... fun." Y/N commented warily. He wasn't sure how the evening would turn out. Family dinners just weren't their thing. So there was something bound to go wrong.
"Yeah..." Daniel said as they entered into the main lobby. He patted his son on the shoulder. "At least you get to see your friend. I'm... just there for the ride."
Y/N rolled his eyes. "You're not getting away from this. If I have to go, so do you." He said, to which Daniel huffed. He imagined his mother would've loved to have dinner with other parents. A pity she wasn't here to partake. "It'll be-" But whatever he was going to say was cut off by the sound of his name being said.
"Y/N?" A surprised female voice called out. He suddenly turned sideways to see a very, very familiar person.
Hermione.
She must've just entered into the dentist. She wore a shocked expression, her eyebrows raised at his sudden appearance, and vice versa. Hermione wasn't expecting to see him here, and neither was he.
Y/N looked her over, his eyes widened as he took her in. She had grown since the last time he had seen her, though he still stood an inch taller than her, much to her frustration. And her hair was somewhat shorter than she had previously, it only now reached down to her neck, and less of the bushy pattern of her younger self, and now more, straighter.
Though he could still see a hint of it. She simply looked...like a beauty. She wore a light pink hoodie and a pair of jeans that fitted her well. Her appearance was just elegant, so much that he had to swallow the lump forming in his throat.
But she wasn't the only one who had changed. Y/N himself had grown, obviously he had gotten taller, though not by much, but still enough to be the tallest in their little group of four. His hair had gotten longer, the colour itself had gotten darker too, if he hadn't noticed, Hermione certainly did.
The two stood shocked for nearly a minute. Unable to move from the spot that froze them to the ground. It was only broken when Daniel stepped in, and whispered into his son's ear.
"I'll be outside. Don't take too long."
There was a small amount of teasing in his tone that Y/N didn't like. The older man walked away and out the doors, and Y/N turned his attention back to Hermione, who still looked as shocked as him.
After a moment of silence. Y/N cleared his throat.
"Hi..."
Hermione's nose scrunched up slightly, as
if that one word just threatened how awkward the air was around them. Without much choice, and thinking, Hermione followed too.
"Hi..."
Hers was more high pitched, than Y/N's far lower one. Yet it didn't help to dissolve the air that was tension, around them. Though it wasn't anything bad, after everything that had happened last year, and up to this point. Had the two of them in binds.
Y/N was still feeling terrible, he was keeping secrets from her, things he should tell her but couldn't merely because he was afraid of what she would think, and he just couldn't risk losing her over his own problems that weighed on him.
Hermione herself felt slightly out of it. After their time in Spain, new feelings were beginning to arise between the two of them. And they weren't sure what to think of them.
Simply put, they cared about each other, very much. Concern and worry would always follow themselves, whether near each other or not. But it was beginning to form into something else, it was going beyond simply caring or concern for them.
That much they had realised going on. And they didn't know how to react to it.
The awkwardness spoke for itself.
At Hermione's puzzled look, maybe silencing asking why he was here, though she was not against him being here with her, quite the opposite.
"Just had to get my teeth checked out, chipped one of them." He explained to her, and she nodded her head slowly. "What are you doing here." And immediately Y/N closed his eyes in frustration.
'Her parents work here. Why the hell do you think she's here?' Fenrir said. Y/N could practically feel the spirit's eye roll
"Just came in to see mum and dad." Hermione answered his stupid question, after he opened his eyes. If she found the question itself stupid, she certainly didn't show it
"Good, good. That's... good." Y/N nodded, looking down at the ground before returning her gaze. "You're mum invited me 'round for dinner, my dad too."
"Oh?" Hermione said, her face showing surprise, but suddenly blushed, realising that him showing up for dinner was because of herself, since she had suggested it... more than twice. "That's great." She chuckled nervously, the heat in her cheeks rising at Y/N's constant gaze on her.
'Jesus Christ, Mary and Joseph. Wake me up when you're finished with your little-talk.' Fenrir's voice drowned out and Y/N could only guess he shut himself in his own domain of grey mist, blocking out any further conversation.
"Yeah," Y/N said with a chuckle. "Well, I guess I'll see you tonight." And Y/N spun ahead fast, a sense of dread filling him, he couldn't remain so edged and in confiding with Hermione.
It heated him up, like something cooking him from the inside. And she felt the same, very so.
"Tonight? Wait- but- what?" Hermione hadn't expected it to be so soon, she had no idea. She had to prepare herself, look her best, and find out what to wear.
Things she never really cared to fuss over, but now with Y/N, he made her nervous, panicked even. But why did she care what Y/N thought of her? He hadn't said anything to her before, so why was she freaking out inside?
But Y/N had already exited the building before he could respond, he practically fled from the scene. To which Hermione couldn't blame him for doing, she felt the exact same. Bundling nerves had begun to take her over.
"Oh god."
After rushing out of the dentist in a fleeing panic. Y/N found his father leant against the building wall, who shared a somewhat sombre look, Y/N shared the exact same expression, a far more panicked look. Y/N shook off the nervousness dread and followed his father. They both mulled over what they would be doing the next day.
After a minute of silence to calm down, he asked. "So... How long has it been since the last time you had dinner at another person's house, besides family?"
Daniel grumbled as the two exited through the sliding glass doors of the dentist building.
"Not long enough."
"Me too."
A/N: Next chapter will be visiting Hermione's home, going to Diagon Alley for some much needed help and music start-up. And then meeting up with Harry, who will be in shock to see who turns up at his home. :)
Originally I was planning to have the Hermione home visit in this chapter, but It's been a while since I've updated so here it is early. Just less content.
Also for anyone confused, yes Y/N is now a Chaser instead of a Reserve Seeker. It will be changed in all the early chapters too by the next update so it fits. (You don't need to re-read it, it's pretty much the same except for one scene or two)
