Chapter VI: Fire

Music: TWO-lives/The Weight Of Lives
By Hiroyuki Sawano

The shining light recedes, and then darkness comes back. Clouds and downpour obscure our field of view, but we can distinguish two huge shapes standing in front of us. A lightning bolt suddenly crossed the sky, and its glow distinctly looms the impressing silhouettes of the titans. The closest to the place we are hiding is the colossal titan. The one who caused so many tragedies on this island, the one who was our biggest fear, this god of destruction, is now on our side. I still have goosebumps when I see it appear, but, in Armin's hands, I know that I can trust him. By seeing it, I feel incredibly small compared to this power exceedingly greater than me.

Further, in front of the sea, I see Eren's titan. This one is giving off a different aura, more... familiar. The first time I met this titan, he already gave me this feeling.

"The embodiment of mankind's anger..." I thought, exalted.

And for a good reason... It was Eren. Today, just like him, the titan's behavior is changed. He gives off the same impression of power, but he no longer has the same anger. He looks more like a calm but determined force. Now he perfectly masters his titan, but his emotions too. It makes him even more formidable against his enemies.

Then the colossal titan starts to move. Arrived on the ground on his knees, he slowly stands up. The rainwater evaporates in contact with his body. He takes a big handful of earth and rocks, and prepares himself to cast it towards the battleships. He wasn't as skilled as the beast titan in this domain, but he can still make many damages without taking risks. He places his arm backward, and, using all his might, he propels the rocky debris forward. The power of this gesture causes an air blowing that comes to us and makes our green capes float.

The rubble fly off. Under the effect of the intense heat of the colossal titan's hand, it turned into an incandescent rain. It finally crashes on the enemy fleet. Most of the rocks fall in the sea, causing waves in the water. Some stones hit ships that suffer a few damages. That wasn't enough to make them sink, but this was a good distraction. Eren knows that this is the right moment to start the assault: he starts to run towards the sea.

He hardens his fists, and, just before entering the water, he jumps as high and far as possible. He jumps more than thirty meters forward. He puts his fist backward and hit the nearest ship. The hardened skin allows him to easily get through the armor of the hull. The impact force destroys instantly the boat that explodes and breaks in two parts before sinking. Before the other ships have the time to react, he flies at another one and surround it with his arms. Using all the strength he has, he crushes the ship, and make it sink too. He lifts another one in the air and kicks it with his hardened knee that explodes the hull. He lets it fall, and the boat slowly sinks while its crew is trying in vain to flee.

However, he went a bit too far inside of the enemy formation that starts to target him. Eren keeps moving while falling back to wait another chance. The machine guns on all the ships focus on him. The cannons are also heading towards his direction, ready to shoot their devastating shells. The machine guns make fire on Eren, illuminating the battlefield. They aren't very accurate but their random shots and the amount of bullets sent by each weapon make that they still hit the titan, even when he's agilely moving. Fortunately, that's not very effective since it's not dangerous enough to disable him or mutilate him.

Eren places himself out of range of the machine guns, but he was still close enough for the bombshells. Then the destroyers shoot with their cannons. The shells whistle by quickly crossing the air. A decade of projectiles are coming to the area where Eren is standing. He looks above him in order to try to predict the spots where will the bombs fall. He runs a few meters back, and an explosion makes a crater where he was standing the previous second. Other shells are crashing all around him, sending rocks everywhere and raising the ground at several meters high. Hard to move in this hell... A last shell is going to explode, exactly on Eren's titan. He just has time to jump on the side to avoid the disaster, but he nevertheless gets hurt on his flank. Fortunately his injuries heal almost instantly. As long as a member is not torn off and he's not deeply injured nor hit in the head, he can easily and quickly heal.

I wince. The battle is for the moment to our advantage but it's very tough. The power of the titans and of the enemy military weapons are simply terrifying. This battle is totally different from the fights against titans we are used to.

To avoid a new salvo of bombshells, Armin throws another handful of rubble on the enemies. Repeating the same strategy than previously, Eren runs at full speed towards the adverse fleet, blinded by burning debris. He rushes on the first warship and hit it again and again with his fists. Thanks to their hardened skin armor, they seem unstoppable. The ship doesn't hang fire and slowly sinks. Eren turns towards the others. Unfortunately, he can't yet reach the most dangerous ones to eliminate them because they are too far, and well protected. The cargo is even more guarded, surrounded by the destroyers. He will have to eliminate one by one the boats that get on his way. He crushes a machine gun which succeeded to target him, and then he catches the ship by each extremity. Using all his titan strength, he places it on his shoulders and wrecks it in two against his neck. After that, he throws one piece of the ship after the other on other opponents, causing two flaming explosions. With a simple punch, he finishes the two boats. Only three remaining before the destroyers.

All of a sudden, Eren seems to recoil. He saw something: he is looking at the water in front of him. I frown. "Eren?" I mutter, anxious. I squint to try to perceive what he saw. Then I understand. At Eren's titan's feet, the water suddenly rises because of a submarine explosion that totally tears his legs off.
