Chapter 36 - We're basically dead already.

Chapter 36 – We're basically dead already.

Lucy's POV

The fight's over pretty much before it even began. We lose.

Kailen doesn't order us to be killed straight up, though. No, apparently he has a much more sinister agenda as he simply tells his people to capture us and bring us back to their camp.

I don't fight it as one of the women in human form from earlier grabs both my arms and pins them behind my back, and I still don't fight even when I see everyone else being captured in the same way, including Justin, Amy and Jess.

They struggle briefly, before coming to the realisation that if we fight now we'll be dead in seconds. There're simply just not enough of us to win.

The fight between those in wolf form is a bit different, but ends in pretty much the same way, with those in our group either injured or defeated before they submit.

It all happens in a kind of blur, one that distorts what's happening around me at the same time as slowing it down so I can see everything.

There's shouting, screaming, crying, growling... but it hardly even registers in my mind.

The only thing on my mind right now is the realisation that Beck's been lying to me this whole time and, unlike earlier with Kailen, I don't have to fake the betrayal that's clearly displayed across my face.

All this time I've trusted him with my life, believing that he's the only ever person who's never done wrong by me, and now I find out that... that – well – this.

Beck is the son of the rogue that killed my parents... and all this time he knew.

"Him too," Kailen orders, causing another of the tough-looking rogues to move towards Beck.

He doesn't move to fight him off, though, as the rogue simply places a hand on one of his shoulders, his grip firm but not seemingly painful.

So, what, all this time Beck's been working with the rogues, betraying me all along? He's been passing on information to his father about our findings, our plans? The rogues have always seemingly been a step ahead of us all this time and Beck's the reason? But I don't understand! If he's been the spy all along, then why did he ask me to run away with him? Unless he was planning on bringing me here... back to the rogue camp. Was that his plan all along? All this time he's wanted me to move into the cave with him, was it all just a setup?

Oh, God... I'm such an idiot. I should've known... there've been so many hints, so many things that have never quite added up about Beck. Why didn't I guess that something was wrong?

The rogue holding me roughly pulls my arms behind me tighter, causing a spasm of pain to shoot into my shoulders.

"Move," she says roughly, pushing me forward.

Everyone slowly falls into step behind us as I'm forced to keep walking. I'm not sure what happenes to those in wolf form, but they're not brought with us, meaning there are now even less of us.

We're basically dead already.

The only upside to this is that there are no rogues around in wolf form anymore, but that could easily change at any second.

"You know where to take them," Kailen says, his voice more triumphant than I've ever heard it as I trip and stumble slightly when I'm shoved (yet again) from the rogue preventing my escape.

Justin walks next to me, and we quickly share a look of dread before the rogue holding him back drags him off to the side away from me, not even allowing us the comfort of close proximity.

I'm not sure how long it takes before we reach our apparent destination, but it seems like years before I'm roughly dragged to a stop along with everyone else. There's a building a few yards up ahead, a fairly small stone building with a big metal door and a single small window at the side. From what I can tell, it's an old hunters shed where anyone waiting overnight to check their traps would stay. I've seen a few before but this one looks... different. There are bars across the window, and the door looks more sturdy, almost as if it's been put in place fairly recently.

"All but him," Kailen says, nodding towards Beck whose eyes are currently downcast, staring at the leaves underfoot as if they're the most interesting thing he's ever seen.

Bastard.

Suddenly, we're all shoved forwards again as we're forced to walk towards the building, which I'm now slowly realising is being used as a holding cell. A holding cell for us.

I reach it first and the rogue holding me yanks open the door and shoves me inside, throwing me to the floor in the process. Justin is next, quickly followed by Devlin and Jess before, soon, everyone has been shoved inside the concrete prison with me.

Everyone except Beck, who I can currently see being dragged off somewhere else by another of the rogues.

"Right, I'll be back to deal with you soon," Kailen says, moving to slam the door and lock it.

Justin is the first to move, quickly followed by Dean and David as they realise that we'll practically be signing our own death warrants if we don't do something fast. Using all the strength they have, the three of them shove against it, doing the best to open it.

It's too late. The sound of a key turning in the door brings more people back to the reality of what's happened and, soon, Amy and Jess have even joined in on trying to get the door to budge. They don't even dent it. It's useless.

Jess then pulls her phone out of her jeans, taking one look at it and shaking her head in frustration.

"No signal," she informs, shoving her phone back into her pocket.

A few others check their phones too but there's no luck. It's not too surprising, though, when you think about it. The rogues wouldn't care about phone service; they don't have phone's.

I don't even bother checking mine.

I don't move from the floor where I landed, knowing it's useless to try. I'm as trapped as I was back at my old house and, this time, nobody's going to come running to the rescue.

We failed.

"Fuck!" Justin eventually yells, kicking the door once before moving away to lean against the opposite wall, breathing heavily.

"What the hell just happened, Lucy?" Dean asks, giving up on the door as well, his glare making me flinch.

"I – I don't-" I start, not sure what to say as my eyes start to tear up.

How was I supposed to know that this was going to happen? How was I supposed to know that Beck stabbed us in the back so badly?

"Hey!" Justin snaps, pushing away from the wall and shoving Dean when he takes a step closer to me. "Don't take this out on her, man! This isn't her fault."

"Oh, yeah, then whose fault is it?" Dean demands, shoving Justin back. "Yours?"

"Enough!" David demands, glaring over at the two of them. "This is not the time to be turning on each other!"

"Really? Because I don't think Beck got that memo!" Dean snaps, causing me to flinch despite his words being true.

Dean's right, this is my fault. I'm the one who told them to trust him. I'm the one who got us into this mess.

"Dean. Please," Amy says, her voice sounding the most vulnerable it ever has as she moves away from the door as well and folds her arms across her chest. "David's right."

A few seconds of eye contact between the two of them happens before Dean eventually sighs and begins to pace around the room.

"Okay, so what do we do now?" he eventually asks, glancing around the room.

The room which is completely bare of anything except the seven of us currently stood inside it.

"The window?" Jess suggests softly. "It's the only other way if we can't get out the door."

Walking over to the small window, which actually doesn't contain any glass, Justin quickly tests the bars before shaking his head.

"We're not getting those down without the right tools," he informs us.

"It would be useless even if we could," Devlin sighs, grabbing Jess's hand and pulling her closer to him slightly. "There'll be guards not far by."

"Is there anything else you can think of?" Justin asks him. "Anything at all?"

"Not really," he replies with a small shrug. "Not without the keys at least, sorry man."

"What about the others?" David asks, trying and failing to hide his worry as he knows all too well that his mate is with the other group. "Where are they?"

"My guess? Probably in another one of these. The rogues have quite a few dotted all over the place. They could be anywhere," he informs.

Growling slightly, Justin punches the wall in frustration, not even flinching in pain at the impact.

Just then, the sound of the keys in the door once more fills our ears before it swings open to reveal one of the rogues from earlier, two more stood just behind him.

"Devlin," the rogue says gruffly, glaring straight at him and motioning his head once for him to follow. "You know how it goes."

After a slight pause, in which Devlin is clearly debating whether to do as he says or not, he eventually moves to leave the room.

Whatever this is, it can't be good, and Jess seems to know it too.

"No," she says, her voice wavering as she clings onto his hand when he tries to let go. "Don't go."

"I have to, Jess," he sighs, turning to look back at her. "It's just the way things work around here. If I don't go with them, it'll just make things worse, and I'm not going to risk you getting hurt because of me."

"But-"

"No," he cuts her off, leaning in to peck her on the lips quickly. "I'll be fine, okay?"

"Wait!"

He doesn't. Instead, he lets go of her hand and exits the room without a single glance back, the door being hurriedly locked behind him before the rest of us get a chance to escape.

"Hey, it's okay," Amy says, moving over to give her sister a hug. "I'm sure he'll be back."

We're all thinking the same thing, I know we are.

Devlin betrayed his group and went against Kailen's orders. They see him as a traitor, and he's not going to get off lightly.

Oh, God.

"Hey," Justin murmurs, moving to sit next to me on the floor where I now rest my back against the wall. "It's going to be fine."

"No it's not," I whisper, shaking my head.

"Come here," he sighs, moving to put his arm around my shoulders and pulling me closer to him.

"I didn't know, Justin. I didn't – I swear," I mumble, my tears resurfacing as I watch Jess trying to pull herself together on the other side of the room.

"I know," he says. "I know you didn't."

I'm not sure how long it is before the metallic clink of keys in the door sounds again, but it feels like over an hour at least.

"Oh, my God!" Jess cries the second she sees the state that Devlin's now in as he's practically shoved straight into her, the door shutting and locking once more.

"It's really not that bad," he tries to assure her, his voice sounding exhausted but also trying to be as reassuring as he can manage. "Seriously, it looks a lot worse than it is."

He's lying, you can tell from the way he winces at the slightest movement, but he doesn't want Jess to worry.

He looks awful, though, his one eye completely swollen shut as he moves to carefully sit on the floor. He's black and blue all over, ten times worse than when he was attacked back at Justin's house. Large gashes can be seen through the tears in his T-shirt, looking deep and painful as they drip blood everywhere. His index finger on his left hand also looks to be broken, the entire of it now completely black, and from the way he cringes every time he breathes, I'm beginning to think he's got a few broken ribs too.

"Don't feed me that crap," Jess says, the worry not leaving her expression as she kneels down next to him, running her fingers lightly over some of the bruises seen on his face.

"Trust me, I've gone through worse," he sighs, which doesn't do much to put her mind at ease.

"Why?" Jess asks in bewilderment. "What could you have possibly done to deserve worse than this?"

"Nothing," he replies bitterly. "It's just the way it is. Survival of the fittest and all that."

"That's awful," Amy says, looking stricken. "Why are rogues so interested in pain and suffering?"

"It's just the way it is," Devlin repeats, that being the only reply he seems willing to give.

"Not for you, not anymore," Jess says, the confidence in her voice pretty high for someone locked up awaiting death in a rogue camp.

I turn away when she leans in to kiss him, letting them have a minute of as much privacy as they're able.

Then, when there's nothing else to be said and Jess has helped to clean up Devlin's injuries as much as she can without a first aid kit, we sit in silence and wait for whatever's going to happen next.

(Hey guys!!! So I know it's short but here's chapter 36. I wasn't quite sure how to make this one any longer and know that the next few chapters are probably going to be quite long so I decided to just leave it.

Anyways, I hope you liked it. It's not my best chapter but, oh well, I'll make up for it in the next few chapters, promise!!!
