Chapter 14 - Idiot.
Chapter 14 - Idiot.
Lucy's POV
It's around quarter to ten when Justin and I finally reach the southern side of the Pack border. To say that it's awkward would be the understatement of the century; we haven't really spoken much since we parted ways with the rest of the group twenty minutes ago.
Already I can tell that tonight is going to be a fun night... not.
Our orders from David were that we're to stay in our human forms (unless we run into any trouble, of course) so that we can check in with the others every hour, which means that I'm officially stuck with Justin in our human forms for pretty much the entire night. Fucking fantastic.
"Dad and Wayne have just reached their side," Justin informs me, putting his phone back into his pocket.
I nod in reply, and we start making our way along the border, not wanting to let any rogues slip through. "So... do you have any idea about what's going on?" I then ask, trying to fill the silence.
"None whatsoever," he replies, shaking his head and shoving his hands into his pockets. "But, whatever it is, I know it's serious. I mean, dad tells me everything, it's all part of the Alpha training, so the fact that he doesn't want me to know about this..."
"Means it's definitely not good," I finish, nodding my head slightly.
"Yeah..." he confirms, before we lapse into an awkward silence once more.
Great.
Another fifteen minutes of silence pass.
"So, what time do you want to set out tomorrow?" he eventually asks, and I do my best to hide my grimace.
I'd almost forgotten that Justin's coming with me to see Beck tomorrow and, let me tell you, I am not looking forward to it. It's going to be so awkward and tense, especially now that Beck knows Justin rejected me... and I'm not one-hundred percent sure that he'll be able to keep his temper in check. Basically, there is a very high chance that tomorrow is going to be awful.
"Um, I'm not sure," I admit, answering his question. "I think I'll be skipping school tomorrow, depending on how late we have to stay out tonight, and I probably won't be going until late afternoon."
He nods for a second, seemingly contemplating something before he speaks up again. "Give me your phone," he says, his tone different from the usually no-nonsense demanding one that I've grown so accustomed to.
"Um... why?" I ask, letting the confusion seep into my voice as I pull it out of my back pocket and hand it over.
"So I can give you my number," he replies easily, as if it's not completely out of the ordinary when it most definitely is. Justin Detroit, I repeat, Justin Detroit is giving me his number... can I be the first to ask what the actual fuck?!
After assumingly saving himself into my contacts, he looks back up at me and gives me my phone back, seemingly amused by the obvious shock that must be showing on my face.
"You know, so you can text me or something when you're ready to set out," he explains with a shrug, and that clears up some of my confusion.
Right, he gave me his number so I can give him a time to set off, which makes sense. Although, I was kind of just waiting for him to demand a time to set off... and expect me to be there. Isn't that how it goes?
"Right... okay," I reply, not really sure what else to say but also not wanting to lapse into silence again. I mean, we'll be stuck here for hours yet, so we might as well at least attempt at a conversation, right? "Um, so, are you going in tomorrow?"
"Yeah," he sighs, "I doubt dad will let me skip again, anyway."
I nod, deciding that I should probably wait until about four to text him then. It's then that I realise that I have absolutely no idea what to say and, by the looks of it, neither does he.
Goddammit, why did we have to get paired up together?
"Let's play a game," Justin suddenly suggests, taking me completely off-guard yet again.
"What?" I ask stupidly.
"A game," he repeats, looking at my slightly sceptical expression. "C'mon, it'll pass the time."
"Um... okay," I reply slowly, looking around. "What did you have in mind? Because if you were thinking of eye-spy then I'm going to break it to you now, we're pretty limited." I motion to the surrounding trees, causing him to laugh slightly which takes me by surprise once more.
"I was actually thinking more along the lines of twenty-one questions," he replies, looking over at me.
Wait, he wants to play a get-to-know-you game...?
"Um, sure," I eventually reply with a shrug, not really sure what's going on right now but not really caring. I'd much rather be on patrol with this Justin than the jackass he usually is. "You go first."
"Okay. Um... favourite colour?" he asks, sounding slightly curious.
"Dark green," I reply instantly, it's been my favourite for as long as I can remember.
He nods to himself and smiles slightly, "not much changed there, then."
That causes my step to falter slightly as I look over at him in confusion. "You remember?" I ask before I can stop myself; I honestly thought he'd forgotten everything.
He just shrugs, looking slightly uncomfortable, before smirking. "Is that your question?"
"No," I answer immediately, shaking my head.
"Well then, your turn," he says, seemingly happy that the subject is officially dropped but, little does he know, I'm not letting it go that easily.
"What else do you remember about me?" I ask curiously and watch as it's his step that falters slightly this time.
"Um..." he replies, shrugging slightly. "You know..."
"No I don't, otherwise I wouldn't have asked," I remind him with a slight grin, probably enjoying putting him on the spot like this way too much.
He sighs and shoves his hands back in his pockets before glancing over at me. "Um... well, you've been obsessed with the forest pretty much from the moment you could walk, your middle name is Marie but you don't tell anyone because you absolutely hate it, you love thunderstorms and used to make me stand outside with you in them despite our parents yelling at us to go back inside, when you were six you had this obsession with wanting to fly, and, yeah..." he trails off when he notices the look of complete and utter shock written all over my face.
I can't believe he actually remembers all that...
"Oh," he says with a slight grin. "And you used to have this weird obsession with wearing odd socks."
I wince at that slightly, feeling a light blush coat my cheeks as I glance down at my converse-covered feet.
"No way..." he says, causing me to grimace and look back up at him.
"What?" I ask, trying to play it off as nothing.
"Take off your shoes," he says with a smirk.
"What? No!" I reply, my voice rising slightly as I start walking again, not fully aware that we'd even stopped.
"Take off your shoes," he repeats, sounding highly amused.
"Nope," I say, shaking my head and dancing out of the way as he goes to grab my arm.
"C'mon," he says, eventually managing to capture my arm and pull me to a stop. "Remove the shoes, Luce."
When it becomes obvious that he's not going to let this go, I sigh and roll my eyes, kicking my feet free of my converse. We both look down to find my right foot covered in a black and white zebra-patterned sock, and my left covered in an orange and black tiger-patterned sock. Cringing slightly when I hear his chuckle, I look back up at him to see him giving me an actual genuine smile.
"You're so weird," he says, shaking his head slightly.
I roll my eyes as I pull my shoes back on, not bothering to undo the laces. "Shut up," I mumble quietly (but I'm pretty sure he heard) before walking ahead of him.
"Hey, wait up, it's my question!" he calls out from behind me, still sounding amused. Asshole.
I reluctantly slow down and wait for him to catch up before asking what his question is.
"How old is Beck?" he asks, causing me to look over at him in disbelief.
"What's it to you?" I reply, unable to keep some of the hostility out of my voice.
What the hell is his problem with Beck?
"Just curious," he says with a shrug.
I sigh, shaking my head. "Twenty-one." He pulls a face at that. "What?"
"He's practically double your age," he mutters, wrinkling his nose in a way that would probably be kind of cute if he weren't pissing me off so much right now.
"No, Justin, that would make me ten and a half years old... a bit of an overstatement, don't you think?" I sigh, letting my annoyance show.
He studies me for a few seconds before seemingly deciding to let it go. "Whatever," he mutters.
I stop walking and turn to face him, knowing exactly what my next question is going to be. "What exactly have you got against Beck?" I ask.
"I just don't like him, alright?" he replies with a shrug. "I think he's an ass."
"In comparison to who?" I ask, my voice rising with incredulity. "You?"
He visibly winces at the venom in my voice, but I couldn't give a crap. I just shake my head and walk away from him. Who the fuck does he think he is?
"Hey, Luce, wait! C'mon..." he sighs, coming up beside me. "Let's just carry on with the game." When I don't reply he adds on, "I'll even give you an extra question..."
I look over at him and take in his almost hopeful expression before rolling my eyes and letting out a sigh. God, he's such an idiot.
"Fine," I mutter, trying to think of a question before finally settling on a simple one. "Favourite fruit?"
"Um..." he thinks for a few seconds. "Probably apple," he finally replies.
I snort and mutter, "Go figure," before rolling my eyes.
He gives me a confused look as we walk. "What?" he asks.
That's when I realise that I've just opened up probably one of the most awkward topics we could possibly ever talk about.
"Oh, um..." I mutter, feeling my cheeks heat and refusing to look at him. "It's actually kind of your - er - scent."
Out of the corner of my eye I notice his eyebrows rising in surprise, and we're both silent for a few seconds.
"Apple?" he then asks, causing me to nod slightly.
"And cinnamon," I admit, still not looking at him.
"Huh," is his fantastic reply, making me want to kick myself for ever saying anything.
We're silent for a few minutes, him seemingly lost in thought and me just feeling like a socially awkward weirdo.
"So... what's your favourite fruit?" he eventually asks.
"Oranges," I mutter, kicking at the twigs under my feet slightly as we walk.
"Uh huh," he says, and that, right there, causes me to stop walking yet again.
"Wait," I say, and he turns to face me. "Is..." but I don't actually dare ask it. Instead, I look at the back of my hand before raising it to my face to sniff. Only then do I realise how stupid that was, as only predestined mates can smell your scent, and I'm only caused to feel more stupid when Justin bursts out laughing. And when I say laughing, I mean he's practically doubled over because he's laughing so hard.
Immediately, a blush finds its way to my cheeks for what feels like the thousandth time tonight.
"Shut up," I mumble, shoving him slightly, before freezing. I just shoved my future Alpha, now that was a really stupid move, but Justin doesn't even seem to notice as he just continues laughing.
"Idiot," I eventually mutter before walking off again.
"Actually," he says, coming up beside me. "I think you just proved that you're the idiot. But, for the record, yes, yes it is..."
I nod at that, not really having much more to say on the matter.
Just then, Justin's phone goes off and he quickly answers it.
"Hey, dad," he says, before pausing to listen to David on the other end. "Yeah, no, everything's fine on our end, what about the others?" Another short pause. "Okay, yeah, that's great. Thanks, I'll see you later."
"What's up?" I ask once he's disconnected the call.
"Well, we're officially off duty," he informs. "Dad's got two more of his friends in on the problem and they've agreed to come and take our place so we can go home. And I think Ricky's going over to take Dean's place for a little while."
"Awesome," I says with a smile, looking at my phone and surprised to see that it's already gone midnight. Exhaustion is slowly starting to settle in and I can't wait to just curl up in bed and get some sleep.
"Yeah..."
It only takes ten minutes before David's two friends show up. One's a guy looking to be around about thirty and, I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty sure he has muscles on his muscles. The other's a woman; she has short brown hair and her expression says that she is definitely not to be messed with. I'm going to take a wild guess and say that they're mates.
"Thanks, guys," Justin says, and they both give a nod in his direction before we leave them to it.
We spend the twenty minute walk back to his house, once again, in silence (although it's not as awkward as it was earlier) and we both just seem content with keeping it that way. In fact, it's not until we reach our destination that he opens his mouth.
"So, I guess I'll see you tomorrow?" he asks slightly awkwardly.
"Yeah," I shrug, looking behind me and just wanting to get home. Tonight's been weird enough as it is. "I'll text you when school gets out or something."
He nods. "Okay."
And that seems to be that. With one final awkward half wave, I make my way down the road whilst he makes his way inside.
Well, overall, I guess that didn't go too bad.
