We become detectives
"What?" Abiagil said, standing up and settling the dogs down. She looked at the door.
An identical of Zephyr stood in the door way.
"What's going on, Borealis?" She said. She must be Borealis, the North wind.
" I was here delivering my brother's customer since he was sick with a cold and I saw a GoddessGirl in your dorm. She clicked it open with some sort of key and your dogs ran out of the dorm. She saw me and then bribed me to stay shut." Borealis explained.
I hid a giggle. Zephyr, the hot, humid, west wind had a cold.
"What does she look like?" Piper said.
"She had a purple chiton and she had spiky orange hair and wings. She had eyes that were-"
"Pansy." Piper said, her teeth gritted.
"Thank you, Borealis. We can take care of the rest." Abiagil said. Borealis nodded then slipped out the door.
"How did she get your key?" Paisley said.
"I have no idea. I always keep my keys in my pocket." Abigail then stuffed her hand in her pocket. She fished out a fake key made from plastic.
"Pansy's second period is Beast-ology. You must have lost it in the Forest of beasts and She must have found it on the ground or something." Abby guessed.
"But how could she have found it just like that? The dorm keys are wooden." I said.
"I may or may not spray paint my keys silver every year so I can tell if a lost key is mine." Abigail said, embarrassed.
"Why would she steal your keys all of a sudden?" Piper said.
"I don't know but I wouldn't put it past Pansy to snoop." Abby said.
Abigail then rushed out the door. We trailed behind her.
She knocked on the dorm across from mine. As luck would have it, Pansy answered it.
"Hey, Smart cookie. What're you up to?" She said to me.
"I don't know. What were you doing in my dorm earlier?" Abigail said.
Pansy stiffened. "What? I had nothing to do with some lame GoddessGirl bribing Borealis to not say anything about that GoddessGirl sneaking in your dorm."
"We never said anything about bribes." Abby said.
Pansy shut the door just as Abigail stuck her foot in it. "Not so fast, Pansy. What were you doing in my dorm?" Abigail said. Her dogs growled at Pansy.
Pansy sighed. "Okay, okay, okay. I snuck in your dorm. But I had good reason to do so."
"Which was?" Abigail said, tapping her foot.
Pansy stared at her sandals. "I was running out of ideas for my column on Teen scrollazine."
"You're kidding." Abby said, hand on her hips.
"I may have start- I mean heard a rumour that a mortal boy snuck into the GoddessGirls locker room and saw you bathing. And that you turned him into a stag." Pansy said, regretting opening the door to us.
"I wrote down the rumour and I wanted to learn more if it was true or not so as luck would have it your key appeared in my pocket." Pansy said, her wings ruffling.
"Stop lying, Pansy. We know you stole it." Paisley said.
"I didn't!" Pansy said, but it didn't seem like she was lying.
"Then who did? Bow Wow?" Abigail said sarcastically, gesturing to her Saint Bernard. Bow Wow was growling louder.
"I found it in my pocket! Honest! I swear on the River Styx!" Pansy said.
Thunder boomed.
"That's a pretty big oath. Think you can put your drachmas where your mouth is?" Piper chimed in. Pansy glared at her.
"She must be telling the truth, guys. If you swear on the River Styx"- more thunder- " it's a sure sign that it's the truth." I reasoned.
"Who were you last with?" Paisley asked.
"Michelle, Saffron, and Eva." Pansy said.
"Are you done, Detective Pandora, or do I need to answer more questions?" Pansy said impatiently.
"We're good for now." Piper said. "But just know that Abigail will come back to you, 'kay?"
We all stormed off to Michelle, Saffron, and Eva's private floor. It was a safety hazard to have gorgons room with a mortal so they had their own personal space. Piper had been sent back to her dorm since mortals weren't allowed in the sixth floor.
"Yes?" Michelle said when we knocked. Once you went up the stairs, it ended at a door. You had to knock or have a key to get in.
Abby tapped a spell on her text scroll. "It's Payton." She said. She sounded as if Payton had magically teleported here. I almost wanted to smile at Abby.
"Payton?" Michelle echoed. We heard shuffling and her drawers open and close.
"Hey, Payton." She said when she opened the door. She was wearing an on- the- shoulder- off- the- shoulder- lilac chiton. She had glittering green lipstick that shimmered. One arm was leaning on the door way. The way some loser trying to be cool would. She was smiling but she must have been in a hurry with her lipstick because green glitter has smeared on her two front teeth making it look like she was six. Or eating spinach.
She frowned. "Ugh." She tried shutting the door but we pushed our way in.
"Hey! Get out!" Michelle said. Michelle's place was much bigger than any of our dorms. There was a flat screen tv on one side of the room with a recline couch in front of it. There was a mini fridge then a hallway that led to their rooms and the bathroom. It looked like an apartment building times 3. Probably because there were three of them living here.
" Tell us about the key." Abigail said, taking some ice cream from the freezer and a spoon.
"Why?" Michelle said.
"Or we'll tell my mom that you stole private property." I singsonged.
"Now sing like a canary." Paisley said surprisingly aggressive.
"Let the cat out of the bag." I said.
"Spill the beans." Abigail said.
"I don't know any other good idioms so just talk." Abby said, taking a spoon of ice cream.
"I had Beast- ology during second period and saw it." Michelle smiled. "I knew it was yours because you spray paint it every year."
Abigail's jaw dropped. "Note to self: stop being artistic."
"Now why did you give it to Pansy?" Paisley said. She got bored so she started twisting her arm this way and that, causing the potted poppy nearby to dance a little bit.
"I had my reasons." She said, looking away. "Now get out before I tell Principal Athena that you trespassed my private floor."
Her snakes edged towards us. I looked at my spoon and saw a big hairy eight legged thing.
"Rosie!" Michelle said. She walked towards me and picked up the tarantula.
"I can't believe you got out of your spider terrarium." She cooed to the spider.
"R-r- rose hair tarantula?" I stammered. I backed away from the couch. Michelle nodded.
"Have I forgot to mention that I keep spiders in my space to keep you and your mom away from me?" Michelle said smiling.
Paisley, who has probably seen far more disgusting creatures in the Underworld when she visits her Mom, glared. "You can't just use animals for your own gain." Since she was still controlling the poppy, she unwillingly made the poppy's petals curl to look like teeth. Even Michelle's snakes recoiled in fear.
"Yeah, I can. Besides, who asked you?" Michelle said.
Rosie started crawling towards me but Michelle used her hand as a wall to keep her from me.
She said, "Patience, Rosie. We have the entire night to take her down."
"Um, I'm sorry Rosie that my mom turned your great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- great- a thousand more great's great- grandmother into a spider. It wasn't my choice."
Rosie softened up but I could tell that she was still eyeing me with all eight of them. Arachne beat my mom at a weaving contest and my mom turned Arachne into a spider since she loved to weave so much. That's even where you humans got the word arachnids, which is what spiders are. Not bugs or insects.
"I'm talking to a spider. I've lost it." I said. Rosie hissed.
"That's it. I'm out." I said. Paisley, Abigail, and Abby trooped behind me as we left her private floor.
Abigail eventually got back her keys and all as well. Looking back, I should have milked my opportunity to feel happy.
Because the next day things were down hill.
