Chapter 40

Artemis POV

"Damn Art you did a great job with the decorations!" Apollo said shaking my shoulder.

We were at the lake for the Christmas Eve ice skating night and, so far the whole pack was gathered. Most people were either skating or taking pictures with each other.

I was keeping a watchful eye on the pack members putting up the hot chocolate stand, it was the only thing not ready in time and even though their backs were turned I was sure they could feel my heated glare.

On the other hand, Apollo was keeping me company while Serena went to skate with Franco after Apollo gave her a pointed look upon seeing me.

The event started almost an hour ago and He still wasn't here.

I could understand if Franco and Serena weren't here either but no they came only thirty minutes late with no clue where Aaron was. Honestly, I made the barrier so everyone could enjoy the festivities, and that included him!

"Sis you're doing that face again," Apollo said pointing at the pout on my face.

I frowned flicking his finger away.

"Shut up...You know you don't have to stay and keep my company. I'm perfectly fine on my own. I happen to like looking at everyone having a good time."

"Is that right? What if I said you were keeping me company?" he said cheekily.

I rolled my eyes.

"I would say you're trying to make me feel better."

"Oh well then looks like I'm doing my job right!" He said happily.

I chuckled.

"Keyword Trying."

"As long as you try that's all that matters! Besides I just made you laugh so that counts for something in my book!" He said with a wink.

"You're so annoying! Go and bother your mate!" I said pushing his shoulder.

He quickly grabbed my hand.

"Skate with me."

"I hate skating."

"I know...So let's gooo!" He yelled excitedly as he pulled me to where we could get our skates.

I was going to make a fool out of myself, but if I fall on my ass, I'm taking Apollo with me.

We went to the side of the lake that was reserved for beginner skaters. So there were mostly little kids and their parents watching as their kids still tried to gather their footing....like me.

Here we found a familiar redhead with Raven and Hazel. Off to the side, we could see Ezra watching Athena teach the two how to skate while the sisters held onto each other for support.

"Aw, I have to get a picture of this!" Apollo said excitedly reaching for his phone.

"Don't you dare let go of me, Apollo!" I yelled grabbing his arm tighter.

He sighed.

"I'm not letting go. Chill. And stop moving, you making the camera shake." He scolded.

I huffed in frustration.

This wasn't even my idea in the first place, now he's criticizing me because I'm shaking like Bambi's first time on ice!

I was able to steady myself enough to stand up straight concentrating solely on not falling. That was until a loud voice broke my focus and I had to grab onto Apollo's arm even tighter.

"There you two are! Why are you over here?" Serena asked coming beside us.

"Art can't skate," Apollo said simply while he snapped more pictures of Athena and the girls frowning when he would get Ezra in the frame.

"Really? How come Ate-" She began as she looked at Athena do a perfect single Axel that included her twirling in the air and landing gracefully on her left foot. This made the girls cheer and clap for her.

"Apollo taught her and she was in ballet for almost ten years," I said dryly.

"Oh..." Serena said quietly.

"Don't be like that Arty, I offered to teach you too!" Apollo whined.

"Yeah, and I hate falling on my ass."

He scoffed.

"Learning how to fight you have to fall on your butt a lot too."

I smirked.

"Not when you're good at it," I answered smugly.

He turned and rolled his eyes at me.

"You hate things you're not naturally good at, attempt it."

"That's not true," I said with a frown.

"You don't ever like looking like a fool. That's why your so annoyed with Aaron too. You got your hopes up and now you think he stood you up, right?"

"Oh shut up Apollo!" I exclaimed and stupidly pushed away from him.

I lost my shaky balance and prepared for the impact my ass was about to feel but instead, I fell into someone's arms.

"Aw, I knew you were falling for me." The person said making me look up to see a foxy grin.

I quickly wiped away the smile that was slowly forming on my face and replaced it with a frown.

"Hmph." I began. "Oh, it's you," I said dryly.

His smile dropped upon seeing my frown. He lifted me and made me turn to face him.

"Hey don't give me that look, Snow! I'm sorry, I really didn't mean to get here so late. I got stuck in town handling a few things. But I'm here now! Can I make it up to you?" Aaron said sweetly.

"Hmm not that I was waiting on you or anything, but what do you have in mind?" I asked folding my arms as his hands rested firmly on my waist keeping me still.

"Well first, this," He said before taking his blue scarf off and wrapping it around my bare neck. "Hey, I knew it would look better on you!" He said kissing my nose.

I buried my face deeper into the scarf to hide my flushed cheeks.

He chuckled.

"Now let's get you off this ice. I'm thinking hot chocolate how about you?" He asked and before I could finish nodding my head I was swooped off my feet and carried bridal style off the lake.

"You're so extra...people are staring," I said as I put my face into his chest.

"Let them stare they'll get used to it at some point." He said with a shrug.

I peeked my eye open to look up at him.

"Get used to what?" I asked.

He looked down at me with a smirk.

"Me swooping you off your feet." He said with a wink.

"Ahhh you're corny too!" I groaned before receded into his chest.

I felt his chest vibrate as he let out a laugh.

"I'm glad you're listing out things you like about my personality. Here I'll do you next."

Before I could stop him he began his list.

"I like that you're confident and stubborn. I like how your ears get red when I say something sweet or corny. I like that you care, about everyone. I like how I can go on for hours listing all the things I like about you and still find more things to list the next day..." He said by now he had stopped walking and was now smiling down at me.

"Y-you're an idiot." I stuttered out and flicked his nose.

"I'm your idiot," He said with a wink.

He gently put me down on one of the chairs at the hot chocolate stand. He quickly crouched down and began taking off my skates.

"I'll be right back." He said before leaving.

He came back shortly after with my boots.

"I'll stand in line with you. No need for you to do everything." I said as I finished putting on my boots.

"Alright let's go." He said with his hand out for mine.

***

"Alright favorite Christmas memory growing up," Aaron asked curiously as he took another sip of his Hot Cocoa.

I racked my brain for a memory of one Christmas that wasn't a total mess until one that always made me laugh came to mind.

"Ooh okay, I have one! So growing up my mom would have these big Christmas parties for the town. Every year the town hall ballroom would be decked out with just about every Christmas decoration you can think of including this enormous tree. Anyway that year I was about thirteen and I guess you could say I was "rebelling", but I never liked attending those balls in the first place. So I put my foot down and said I wasn't going and if she made me go she would regret it. Of course, I'm just a kid and adults don't wanna hear that, so she made me go anyway." I explained.

Aaron chuckled.

"Okay, so what did you do?"

I smirked.

"I gave the best performance of my life. When my mother was giving her usual boring speech I unplugged her mic and plugged in my own. Now, mind you this was during my Mary J. Blige faze so I ran around the entire ballroom, hopping on tables and chairs singing "I'm Goin' Down" by Mary J. Blige. Then at the end when the final chorus hit, I pushed down the Christmas tree." I said as I began to laugh as I looked at Aaron's face of shock.

"Shit Snow! What did your mom do? And where was Apollo and Athena to talk you out of doing this stunt!?"

I giggled.

"They were in charge of the music," I said with a shrug.

"As for my mother, during the whole performance, she just watched me in shock, her eyes never leaving mine. Then at the end of it all, she laughed, like full-on laughed. Now, this was the first time I heard my mom laugh like that and it made me laugh along with her. While the rest of the people in the ballroom looked at us like we were crazy." I explained finding myself smiling at the memory.

"Then we went home as if nothing happened," I said quietly.

"Damn and here my memory was gonna be something simple like telling silly Christmas stories by the fireplace on Christmas Eve." He said running his hand through his hair.

I shook my head.

"That actually sounds really nice. I wouldn't mind recreating that memory with you, we can do it tonight!" I said squeezing his hand.

"Alright, but first let's get our picture taken." He said pointing to the photo area that had little Christmas props to take pictures with.

"I say I'll be Santa and how about you be my Mrs. Claus." He said wiggling his eyebrows.

I laughed.

"Hmm no I was thinking I'll be Santa and you be Rudolfo," I said with a wink.

"Oh, now that's cold. Besides, I think you're the best candidate for Rudalfo considering how red those ears of yours get."

"Oh hush!" I exclaimed shoving his shoulder.

In the end, I ended up being an elf and Aaron was Santa.

We began walking back to the Packhouse leaving the rest of the pack to enjoy the night. Our hands still within each other from the picture as we took our time getting home.

"Dang so who do you think is gonna break the news to Mrs. Claus and tell her Santa is cheating on her with the cutest elf around??" Aaron sighed referring to the photo of us in his hand.

I shook my head.

"Seeing that picture would surely break poor Mrs. Claus's gingerbread heart," I said looking at the pictures of Aaron in that ridiculous white beard and red hat, he was looking down at me with my fake pointy ears and green hat. We were holding hands facing each other and looking into each other's eyes. Funny thing was that this was just one out of the six taken, in each photo before that one I kept blinking, it didn't help that it felt like everyone was watching us. This resulted in Aaron telling me to just look at him. Which landed us with one scandalous picture of Santa and one blushing elf.

"Honestly she should have seen the signs," Aaron said with a shrug. "I'm sure he's been looking at her with those eyes for a long time."

I shrugged my shoulders.

"Maybe Mrs. Claus is getting some from someone else on the side. I mean can you blame her? Santa has been putting on a few pounds over the years."

"True...Who do you think it is?" He asked curiously.

"Probably Jack Frost," I said simply.

"Hahaha dang there's gonna be some change occurring in the North Pole. I say we keep this," He said waving the picture, "to ourselves until after Christmas. I don't know about you but I want all of my Christmas gifts."

"Sounds good," I said nodding my head. "Destroying the Claus's marriage sounds like we're asking for coal."

We finally made it back to the Packhouse only to hear a commotion coming from the living room. Sure enough, it was everyone surrounded by the T.V yelling at the screen.

"What are you guys yelling about this time?" I said as Aaron and I walked into the living room.

"This rigged ass dance show!" Apollo exclaimed pointing at the T.V.

"I'm calling my agent to tell them to recount the votes!" he yelled childishly.

I shook my head.

"Dude it's Christmas Eve. No ones recounting anything but sheep to get to sleep." I said rolling my eyes.

"But it isn't fairrr! They should have won!" he whined as he flopped onto the couch dramatically.

"Athena you better not be calling his agent give me the phone," I said walking over to her as she was in the corner whispering into the phone.

I ended up having to wrestle her to the ground for the phone and I'm sure at some point the person on the other line ended the call after contuinesly asking if everything was alright.

"Life's not fair! Now get over it." I said firmly to my two pouting siblings sitting on the couch.

"Now who wants to open Christmas Eve presents?!" I asked excitedly.

"Ooo Me!" Apollo and Raven exclaimed.

"Alright there underneath the tree, everyone get the one that has your name on it," I said pointing to the gifts I had hidden under the tree before leaving earlier.

Soon enough everyone had open their gifts.

"We all got PJs!" Hazel said happily.

"Yup we'll all be matching tomorrow morning!" I said proudly.

"Now you two need to get ready for bed so you can open up more gifts in the morning!" Apollo said pointing to the sisters. "Come on I'll tell you girls a story about the time I met Santa Claus!"

The girls happily followed Apollo upstairs giving us time to place their gifts under the tree.

Everyone began to bring down wrapped presents to put under the tree until we all retired for the night.

Aaron and I ended up curled up under a big blanket by the fireplace in his room telling each other silly Christmas stories. We both took turns telling stories of the crazy houses Santa was visiting tonight. It was needless to say that we stayed up for hours laughing at each other's imagination. In the end, I think I won on the craziest story about Santa running into the Tooth Fairy at one house, and let's just say that encounter didn't go well. Soon enough we fell asleep.

***

"Artemis! Artemis! It's Christmas!!"

I woke up to little voices calling my name. Opening my eyes I found that Aaron and I were still on the floor our legs wrapped in one another with my head on his chest and his arm around my waist.

I pulled away from him to see his sleeping face as the morning sun hit his face just right. I could tell the light was beginning to wake him up as he closed his eyes tighter with a frown making his dimples show. I couldn't help but lean in and lay a kiss right on his dimple.

Upon pulling back I saw a pair of grey eyes looking up at me.

"Merry Christmas Snowflake," he said with a smile.

I cleared my throat before speaking.

"Yeah um, Merry Christmas Dimples," I said sheepishly.

"Artemissss!" I heard voices yell from behind the door. Now accompanying Raven and Hazel was Apollo and Serena even joined him on this one.

"Seems we have some company," Aaron said as he sat up.

"Yup sounds like it," I said as I stood up to answer the door.

"Merry Christmas!" I said opening the door.

"Merry Christmas!" They exclaimed.

"Come on! Let's open presents!" Raven said eagerly as she pulled on my arm.

"Okay! Okay! Let me just freshen up first and I'll be right down." I said as I walked across the hall to my room.

"Well hurry up everyone's waiting on you two!" I heard Apollo yell as I closed my door.

I quickly brushed my teeth and washed my face before heading downstairs.

I was happy to see everyone wearing their red plaid pajama pants and custom-made white shirt that had a picture of all of us at the dinner party.

"Alright what are y'all waiting for let's open these babies up!" I said flopping on the couch next to Aaron.

The girls wasted no time and began ripping open their presents, jumping up and down and squealing after each present opened. They would rush to show each other and then Apollo who would show the same excitement as them.

Apollo gave Serena her present which was a silver locket that had their entitles on the front and then inside had a picture of the two of them. In return Serena gifted him with a record player and Vinyl, the record player was customized with photos of different performances that went back to when he was just releasing videos on YouTube when he was only sixteen. I could tell Apollo was happy with the gift as he ran his fingers on top of the photos probably reliving each moment in his head.

Athena gave Apollo our gift for him resulting in him playing us all a little Christmas song.  Apollo ended up giving me a few new books and we got Athena some new collectible stuffed animals.

"Alright Dimples for your gift we have to go outside," I announced grabbing his hand.

"Oh alright lead the way." He said letting me pull him off the couch.

I took him to his tinkering garage that he hasn't been in for a while since he's been busy, so this was the perfect place to hide it.

Pulling up the garage door I walked over to the sheet covering it and ripped it off.

"Tada!" I exclaimed.

"Oh shit! You got me a Harley!" He exclaimed as he walked around the motorcycle.

"Not just any Harley, one that needs some work done on it!" I said with jazz hands.

"So you got him a broken gift?" Athena said leaning on the garage door.

I frowned.

"Shut it! He likes tinkering and he hasn't had the time to find a nice Harley to play with!" I exclaimed.

"I love it, Snow," Aaron said sincerely as he pulled me in for a hug.

"I'm glad," I said smiling hugging him tighter.

"Now your gift should be getting here soon so let's go inside and wait." He said pulling me back to the house.

"Wait for my gift to come? Like in the mail?" I asked confused.

"Nope." He said simply.

When we got back inside Apollo and Serena had begun cooking breakfast and I was happy to see that Ella and Wyatt were there playing with the girls.

"Ella! You're back!"

"Oh Artemis! Merry Christmas!" She said flashing me a big smile.

"Merry Christmas you two!" I said hugging Ella.

"Oh let me properly introduce you two. Artemis this my mate Wyatt and Wyatt this is my friend Artemis." She said gesturing to the two of us.

"Nice to finally meet you, Wyatt," I said taking his hand giving it a firm shake (silently saying if you hurt this beautiful soul again you're dead)he gave me a weak smile in return.

We began to talk for a bit as we played with the girls and their new dolls.

There was some commotion at the front door with Aaron and it looked to be his parents I began to walk over to greet them when Aaron stopped me.

"Alright Snow your present is here, just go sit down on the couch!" He told me making me turn back to the living room and sit down.

I was surprised to see that Mrs. Mary was the one to come over to me with something behind her back. She walked over to me a bit shakily but still good.

"Oh, my Moons! You did so well Mrs. Mary! Is this my present because this is great I'm so happy for you!" I rambled trying to get up and give her a hug only to be stopped when she put something wrapped in a cloth in front of my face.

I looked at her confused.

"We heard that you like cats...Merry Christmas Dear!" She said happily taking off the cloth revealing a black cat with the prettiest turquoise eyes, its paws were white looking as if he had on little boots.

I slowly took the little guy from her hands and held him away from me.

"He's mine?" I asked looking around the room for confirmation.

My eyes landed on Aarons as he nodded his head.

"Yup that little guy is one of the kittens my cat Shadow gave birth to about a month ago." He explained gesturing to the black cat in his arms.

I looked at him and then back at the kitten in my hands.

"So you're giving him to me?" I asked again.

"Yea Crazy and here's all the stuff for the thing," Athena said sliding a decorative bag filled to the brim with different items for the kitten.

"There's even a little Christmas outfit for him in there." She said looking in the bag.

"Oh gosh. Thank you guys so much!" I exclaimed as happy tears filled my eyes I quickly cuddled the little guy into my chest.

"A cat really?" I heard Apollo say from beside me.

"Can I keep him, Apollo? Pleaseeeee!" I whined.

He sighed.

"Fine..."

I squealed and pulled the little guy from my chest and held him in front of me.

"You're gonna need a name huh?" I said to myself quietly.

"Oh, I know! How about Dobby!" I announced.

"Haha from Harry Potter really?" Athena laughed.

"Yup it's Aaron and I's movie it's only right," I said with a shrug.

Everyone began talking amongst themselves as I continued to look at the kitten in front of me.

"You have to do it tonight," Diana said firmly in my mindscape.

"What are you talking about Diana? Merry Christmas to you too by the way." I said rolling my eyes.

"You know what I'm talking about Artemis. Do it before tonight trust me."

"I can't do that to him on Christmas Diana."

"Don't be selfish Artemis you've waited long enough and it's time."

"I-I can't. I can't just-" I began.

"You don't think I hate the idea either? But this is just what we have to do and we knew this from the start even before we met him. I'm sorry that you- no we...fell in love with him. Now it's time to let him go for both of your sakes."

"Okay. I'll do it tomor-"

"No. Do it before tonight."

"Why!? What's so important about today? Diana we're already going to break his heart he deserves to have at least one more happy day with us!" I exclaimed.

She sighed.

"Today marks one month since we found our mate." She said before going deeper into my mindscape.

Then it all made sense.

My heat.

I was snapped from my thoughts when I felt a sharp pain on my cheek.

"Shit Art! That thing scratched you!" I heard Apollo yell.

I focused my attention back on the kitten in my arms that was now thrashing to get out of my hold.

"Crap Snow are you okay? I'm so sorry. He's never behaved like this." Aaron said taking the kitten from my hands having it calm down in his hold.

I touched the three marks that were now on my cheek bleeding lightly.

I shook my head with a small smile.

"No why are you apologizing? I guess he just doesn't like the name Dobby." I said with an airy laugh.

"Art let me see," Apollo said turning my face to his.

"I'm fine Apollo it's just a little scratch it'll heal in a couple of minutes," I said with a shrug.

"That's not the point. I don't want that cat-" He began.

"You said I can keep him so can you just-...please Apollo," I said softly.

He looked into my eyes causing me to turn away because I knew if I looked long enough he would make me crack.

"Okay." He said squeezing my hand.

"Thanks. I'm gonna go set him up in my room." I said taking the kitten away from Aaron and grabbing the bag Athena gave with the kitten supplies.

Once I got to my room I set the kitten down on the bed around some pillows. I turned to get his bed from the bag but I turned back around to find that he jumped off the bed. Before I could catch him he ran under the bed.

"Hey, Hey no Dobby come here boy." I cooed as I looked under the bed.

I couldn't fit underneath all the way but my arm could. Reaching in to get him he seemed to inch back farther giving me a tiny hiss.

I ran around to different sides of the bed to get him but he just kept moving as soon as I got close.

After a while, I was fed up.

"Come on! I just-just want one thing to myself..." I said to myself.

"I didn't do anything to anyone and yet even this cat hates me! He just met me and already thinks I'm shit!"

I sat on the floor with my back against the dresser feeling sorry for myself when I knew I deserved this.

"You don't deserve this. No one does Art." Diana said softly.

"Diana please...just leave me alone. I want to be alone." I said putting my face on my knees.

"No, you don't. Just breathe. I'm here. Just breathe Art." She cooed.

I took a deep breath. And tried to calm down. She was right. I never wanted to be alone it just always seems like I'm destined to be alone.

"We'll get through this. One step at a time. Together."

I nodded my head and wiped the unshed tears from my eyes.

I got up and began to get ready for the day. There were still things that needed to be done before tonight's ball. I need to pick up the rest of everyone's attires from town, check on the ballroom, and check on the barrier.

I'll worry about Aaron later. For now, I'll make sure the day is perfect for everyone else.

And that's exactly what I planned to do.

Fastening myself off the floor I made my way to my closet and picked out my outfit for the day. I decided to stay in festive wear because if I dress the way I'm feeling I would throw on a potato sack and some black tights and that sounds like a lot of unnecessary attention drawn to me.

Instead, I threw on red tights, a green skirt, and a fuzzy white sweater, and some brown low-top boots. Lastly, I let my curls out and had my hair fall on my shoulder then to push it out of my face I put on a reindeer antlers headband I got from a shop in town.

I was ready to leave when I remembered the kitten underneath my bed. Rummaging through the bag with his things in it I got out some small treats for him.

Heading back on the floor I made kissy noises as I tried to bribe him out.

"Why don't you just talk to the thing?" Diana asked sounding annoyed at the situation.

"Well, I've never tried to talk with animals, not from the forest," I said simply.

"Sometimes I don't understand your logic. It's an animal Artemis. Try talking to the thing you're making us look dumb. And I refuse to be bested by some puny excuse of a tiger." She said with a huff.

I rolled my eyes.

"He's just a kit you think he can even talk yet?" I asked.

"I wonder how we could find out...!" She said sarcastically.

"I can't do it. He's not willing to talk and I don't plan on forcing him. I don't have time for this."

With a sigh, I pushed the bed roughly making it go to the wall and leaving the kitten exposed. I quickly picked him up by his scuff and placed him in the sunflower carrier bag.

"I still wanna know why these little shits don't like us," Diana mumbled out.

"Maybe they can sense your bitchy attitude," I said with a shrug as I walked out of the room.

"Hmph, I think you mean superior attitude. Comes with the role of being a Queen Bitch."

"Please stop referring to yourself as a bitch honestly we're Alpha females," I grumbled back to her as I walked down the stairs.

"Hey, Art your just in time breakfast is ready!" Apollo exclaimed as I made it downstairs.

I looked at the table as everyone was sitting down beginning to eat, Aaron was in a conversation with his father to his side was an empty seat with a heated mug of what I can on guess to be hot chocolate sat on the placemat.

I bit my lip. If I go over there I'd act as if everything was fine. Aaron would give me a cheeky smile and say something sweet and when he passed to be the mug our fingers will brush against each other. I would feel the sparks and smile. We would talk with everyone but still be in our own little bubble made for only us. He would end up getting full like usual but would wait until I started picking stuff off his plate to finally slide it to me. In the end, he would get a napkin and wipe any powder sugar that didn't reach the mouth and I would move away when he licked his thumb to wipe it off the rest and when he would finally catch me he would lick it off his thumb. And I would call him a creep. It would be normal. But I would walk away with a heavy heart because I know what's to come.

So what I do next sets the theme for the rest of the day.

"I'm good actually. I really have to do a lot before tonight, so this will do." I said with a smile as I took an apple from the counter.

"So you're gonna skip your favorite meal of the day...to go to work...on Christmas?" Apollo asked suspiciously.

"It's not skipping if I eat something," I said with a shrug.

"That's not a meal Artemis." He said putting down his plate and looking at me seriously.

"I'll eat l-" I began.

"Is something wrong?" He asked sharply.

I looked down at the apple in my hands.

"I just want...tonight to be perfect," I said hoping he wouldn't push this any farther.

"And it will but not if you pass out on the job. Here just take a container to go. Please." He said and before I could even reply he was already finding a container.

"You're watching the girls today right?" I asked as he placed the food into the box.

"Yeah they wanted to go horseback riding, and Ezra said he would help them so it'll most likely be just him and I with the girl since Athena will be busy." he finished as he passed me the container.

"Hmm, interesting. Try not to kill him. And be back here by three, I should be back with your suit and the girl's dresses by then. The ball is at five so that will give everyone enough time to get ready." I explained.

"Alight! Be careful!" He said as I began to walk out of the kitchen.

"Everyone be back by three to start getting ready! I'm heading out now so I'll see you all then" I said quickly as I passed by the table.

"Oh wait Snow where's Dobby?" Aaron asked quickly as I was already speeding walking to the front door.

"He's right here," I said gesturing to the bag on my arm. "He'll be running a few eranges with me today," I said avoiding his eyes.

"Oh alright well I guess I'll see you later then," He said softly.

With that, I left.
