"You alright there, Red?"
I jumped at the question, frowning up at the blond staring at me from where he was lounging sideways on his couch. He was leaning on his elbow in that nonchalant way only Easton seemed to know how. Even when he was upset he could still hold onto that casual manner of his.
Those ice blue eyes of his stared me down from under his furrowed brows---well... what I could see of them anyway since his damn hair kept falling in front of his eyes. It was more appealing on him because those golden curls of his knew how to curve just right in front of his eyes.
Damn Easton and his fucking wavy locks!
I shifted a little from where I was sitting, which was on the opposite side of the coffee table between the two couches. Except while Easton was lying on his couch, I was sitting on the floor with my back leaned against the edge of the cushions. Earlier I had pulled up my knees and wrapped my arms around them to have one of my hands hold onto the wrist of the other.
Now I could feel my hand's grip tightening the longer Easton was staring at me.
Swallowing, I tightened my jaw and slowly started to shake my head.
The blond Were's brows furrowed more, eyes narrowing slightly.
"You sure?"
I shrugged a shoulder, nodding but remained quiet.
Ever since that night a few days ago where Dennison and I sat in my kitchen and he swore me to secrecy about finding, not only Maddox, Sr.'s grave empty, but Langley's too I have not been able to focus.
I'd been in and out of my thoughts, getting a little too jumpy when someone talks to me or puts their hand on my shoulder because they said that I didn't hear them call me the first time. Keeping what I know to myself was eating at me and I was so worried about letting it slip out about what I know to Easton that I was trying so hard to keep quiet.
Except being quiet wasn't my thing (apparently) because lately, I have been quieter than usual, according to Eli. And on top of that---just to remind me of my promise to keep quiet---Dennison had looked at me from across that breakfast table and raised a brow while replying to what his son had pointed out.
"That's probably for the best... Isn't it, Kale?"
I remember looking back at the man whose gray irises seeped behind golden ones.
Glancing at Eli whose own eyes were narrowed slightly while his younger brother was looking puzzled (along with the others), I swallowed, nodding, "Yeah... I just... I've been a little nervous about the baking class I signed up for at the school."
"Oh that's great, Kale!" Thea smiled, leaning over to touch my forearm.
I gave her back a smile, not as bright as hers, but enough to convince her that I wasn't ready to pull my hair out because of what I knew. Once my cousin turned away to the conversations going on with the others, I looked back at Dennison across the way. His brow rose and he nodded once, mouthing, "I won't let him blame you."
Pft. Easier said than done, Dennison.
Easton pushed himself to sit up and I stiffened, eyes widening a little. He kept his gaze on me, turning his head away a bit and asked me again if I was okay.
"I'm... I'm fine."
He obviously didn't believe me because he started pushing himself closer to the edge of the couch and leaned over his knees with his hand clasped over the top of the other. Those piercing eyes of his scanned my face for a good minute. It felt longer though.
"Cut the crap, Red. What's bothering you?"
I swallowed again, feeling my heart pounding a lot louder than I wanted it to.
"I'm just---Just---"
"Yes?" Easton raised a brow, tilting his head as he waited for me to continue.
I definitely wasn't thinking when I agreed to come over to hang out. I definitely wasn't thinking when I felt trapped sitting here and the Werewolf across from me was unpredictable. But then how was I supposed to think clearly when all I kept thinking about was what mentioned Werewolf was going to do when finding out that I knew his sister was possibly alive this whole time.
I winced at my mind mentioning Langley.
She was everything to her brother. She was his twin for crying out loud. He was a total mess that day seven years ago and then progressively got worse over the years. Can you imagine what Easton will do to me when he finds out that I knew Langley was alive all this time?
I blinked at the sound of Easton's hand knocking hard in the middle of the table while firmly saying, "Red."
"What?"
Easton stared at me, brows furrowed again except he looked more confused than annoyed or angry. Which was good, I guess?
"The fuck is wrong with you?" he asked for what was probably the third (fourth?) time.
I scrunched my nose, shaking my head and grumbled, "Nothing! I said 'nothing'! Just leave it alone!"
I glared at him, my hand tightening around my wrist again. Easton's gaze fell on my hands then flicked it back up to my face.
"Whatever it is... It's making you fucking tense."
Rolling my eyes, I shook my head and turned my attention elsewhere. I knew that if he kept pressing it, I was going to let something slip and that was just going to cause me a world of shit. So I figured I'd just look away from him instead so that I wouldn't fall prey to the way his blue eyes seemed to see through everything.
Was it just me that I feel like he could do that to?
I felt a nudge against my sneaker and turned forward only to see that Easton had moved himself closer. He was now sitting on the edge of the coffee table in front of me. I blinked, frowning as I leaned back a bit while the blond leaned forward. His nose was almost touching mine and I could see the different shades of blue that made up the overall piercing color belonging to Easton.
"Are you tense, Red?"
I swallowed, shrugging a shoulder stiffly.
"M---Maybe..."
The blond nodded slowly, his eyes looking my face over again. I never understood why he did that. He'd seen my face a thousand times. There was no need to study it further like he was now. Before I could snap at him to stop staring at me, Easton's eyes locked with mine and I tensed up again.
Without breaking from our stare, Easton whispered, "I can help with that."
My eyes widened, swallowing hard before stammering, "W--What do you mean?"
Then he gave me that lopsided boyish grin that made me suck in a breath. I hated when he did that.
I looked away from his gaze to his hand slowly reaching out and over to one of mine. His fingertips brushed across the top of my skin and it took everything in me to not shiver at his touch.
Fuck... What was happening?
My hands pulled from his, reaching behind me to hold onto the cushions of the couch and pull myself up. I stammered at the blond in question of what he was doing while he just simply kept that grin of his while watching me squirm.
Fucking Moody Asshat.
I swallowed, leaning back but stumbled a bit before lifting my legs awkwardly onto the couch and pushed myself backward. I hit the back of the couch and glanced at it before trying to awkwardly climb over that too.
"Ease... What... Hey! Back up! Stop---Stop getting so close!"
The Werewolf gave zero fucks. He was still grinning at me, those blue eyes disappearing behind the gold of his wolf, and was coming towards me in a predatory manner. That low growl rumbling out of his chest made me squeak a bit because Easton had let his lip curl up a bit and I caught a glimpse of those wolf fangs.
Frowning at the asshole closing in as one of my legs was crossing over the back of the couch, I snapped, "Easton! That's not funny! Stop it, dammit!"
"Or what?" the blond's smirk curling more.
I slapped at his hand that reached for my ankle of the leg that was still pressed into the cushion but that only made Easton laugh. Asshole. I yelped when my balance was almost lost but caught myself on the edge just in time. My attention went back to Easton now the one climbing onto the couch like I had---but of course, he was doing so in a much calmer and less clumsy way than I had.
"Crap!" I tripped when my footing wasn't as balanced as I thought from getting off the couch and I went down hard.
I winced from falling harder than necessary but then quickly recovered because my senses were picking up on the Werewolf still lurking my way.
Using my hands, I shuffled myself backward, using my feet to help push myself away from Easton. The blond leaped off the back of the couch and his feet landed with a heavy thump. Easton started making his way over towards me in this half-crouch, half-crawl that made me hold up a finger to him as I shouted at him to back up.
"I'm serious, Easton! Don't you get any closer! You know I hate when you do that shit!"
Easton grinned, "Why?"
"You know why!" I snapped back, shaking my foot from his hand's reach when he teasingly tried to grab the top of my sneaker.
"C'mon, Red... Level with me."
"Level with you!? To do what!? Scaring the shit out of me?"
Easton laughed, shaking his head and those wavy locks of his shook with the motion. God dammit!
"I just want to help with your tension, Red."
"I'm not tense!" I argued then yelped once Easton got a good grip on my ankle and using just a smidge of strength, he tugged me towards him. I wasn't even able to turn away because Easton managed to lock his legs on both sides of my hips, keeping me in place.
My eyes widened, me breathing hard and cursed when Easton swiftly grabbed onto my wrists and held them by the sides of my head. He bent his head towards mine, his eyes scanning my face again that made my face heat up.
The corner of Easton's mouth curled just as he whispered, "I haven't kissed you today, Red."
I swear I could hear myself gulp louder than normal. He probably did too because that smirk of his grew.
He didn't even give me a second to retort anything just by bending closer to take hold of my mouth with his. I felt myself moan from the little-harder-than-necessary pressure of this kiss and yet I was feeling my body relax. Instead, I was concentrating on lifting my head a little to move my mouth against Easton's a little better.
Easton growled at my slight biting of his bottom lip and I grinned a little before kissing him again.
With a slight pressure of pushing my wrists against the floor, I took that as a silent order to keep them in place while Easton pushed himself up onto his knees. He reached behind him to pull off his t-shirt and tossed it aside. My eyes fell to the taut muscular chest and abdomen very briefly before Easton bent down again to meet me.
I couldn't help it when I lifted my hands to take hold of his head to keep from moving away from mine. My fingers happened to slip into that God damn wavy hair of his and its softness was just adding to how perfect it was.
"Red..." Easton panted between kisses, his nose nuzzled against the side of mine before kissing me again.
I didn't answer, just kept taking in how good his kisses tasted, how good at kissing he was.
Easton barely pulled back, panting out, "Give into me." and went right back to locking my mouth with his.
We were making out for a minute longer before Easton pulled back to bend towards my neck, making his way down the side of it. I arched a little, lips parting for a groan, and I had no idea what came over me when I nodded, "Yeah... Yeah, okay."
His back tensed under my hands and his eyes were wide when he lifted his face to look at mine. His brows furrowed a bit, blinking as he scanned my face.
"Really?"
I blinked, nose scrunching a bit before realizing what I'd agreed to. Biting my lip, I was thinking of something to say but it seemed like whenever Easton and I had these intimate moments, we seemed to draw in awkward situations.
"I'd been knocking for some time now and assumed you were pissed-faced drunk again, Easton, with Leo."
Like now.
I blinked as did Easton before we both looked behind him at the living room entrance where not only Valentine was standing, but so was Violet and Jonah.
Valentine grinned, waving a hand in our direction, "But I see that you are not drunk..." and his eyes glanced at me, "and not with Leo."
Talk about fucking awkward!
I gulped, my senses kicking in where I was trying to shove Easton off me. The Werewolf growled in his friends' direction, snapping that it was his house. That he didn't have to open 'the God damn door' if he didn't want to.
"And I was busy," he emphasized, shooting Valentine a look.
Valentine grinned, raising a brow as he chuckled, "Yes... I could see that, Buddy."
I frowned at the hulk-sized guy when he added how it was nice to finally see the real reason why my friendship with Easton was such a big deal to me since the last time we spoke. Narrowing my eyes, I lifted a hand to flip him off before pushing myself to stand. Valentine just chuckled.
The guy was a lot chattier than I liked. Which was irritating.
"What the hell do you guys want?" Easton frowned after standing up from picking up his shirt off the floor.
Valentine shrugged his large shoulders while Jonah wedged his way around the huge guy to chirp, "We wanted to hang out, Easton. Like old times!"
It was at this point that I took notice of the large brown paper bag Jonah was carrying in his arms that I could see the tops of chip bags peering out of. On the other side of Valentine, Violet was holding a twelve pack of beer under one arm and a bag with a liter bottle of Sprite in the other hand.
Jonah's face scrunched, shaking his head a little as he shrugged, "Ya know... Without my little brother since he's too busy attached to his wife's hip."
Violet rolled her eyes, glancing at Jonah as she replied, "You didn't even invite him, Jonah."
The older Dennison twin straightened, scowling at his friend as he snapped, "Because he's attached to Thea's hip! Sigh! God dammit, Vi!"
He leaned towards her, making the she-wolf frown at him while leaning away, and hissed, "Listen... Violet. Put that Werewolf hearing to good use."
Violet growled, her green eyes disappearing behind the gold hue.
"You're pushing it, Dennison. I'd hate to make your wife a widow so young."
The male she argued with straightened, his brows shooting upward while blinking once... twice... then looked at me to grin as he shrugged, "She's PMSing."
"Jonah!"
"What?"
I couldn't help but grin---even if it was nervous. It was hard not to when Jonah was in the room.
Valentine turned to Jonah, snapping at him to 'calm his shit' before turning away---not noticing Jonah make a face at the back of the Were's head. Or I thought Valentine didn't until his fist shot outward and punch the paper bag so hard, it made a bag or two pop and Jonah yelp from the hit he took.
"Awwwww, fucking shit, Valentine!" Jonah groaned, frowning at the bag he was holding. "Look what you did, you lousy fuck! You popped all the bags of chips open!"
Jonah used a hand to motion towards the floor, dramatically waving his hand from side to side at the bits of chips that landed on the floor.
"Look at this shit! Look at the fucking mess you made!"
There were literally, like, three pieces of chips on the floor.
Valentine rolled his eyes, turning back to us before raising his brows.
"So... Mind if we hang out for a bit? Or are you going to self-combust, Easton, if you don't have at it with Kale?"
I made a weird noise in my throat and the strangling noise made the other three at the entrance grin all at the same time. Creepy fuckers.
Easton growled, waving at the couches for Valentine to just sit down. He was already leading the way back to the couches but as he passed his friends, Easton glanced down at the floor and told Valentine, "And clean that shit up... I just swept."
Valentine turned to Jonah, snatching the chips from the guy's hands and then told the other male to clean up the chips. Jonah's mouth dropped open, frowning, "Whaaaa...?"
He looked at Violet, frowning, "Why do I have to clean it? I didn't make that mess!"
"Yes, you did," the she-wolf retorted, not looking at her friend as she walked over to the couches.
Jonah's face went blank, shoulders slouching before pursing his lips and nodded, "I see how it is, Vi... Still being a bitch then, huh?"
Violet shot over her shoulder, "Which is what you are to your wife," that made Valentine laugh and Easton grinned a little. Poor Jonah was in the middle of a pout, grumbling to himself as he knelt down to pick up the "mess" that was made.
"Yo, Kale!"
I jumped, eyes wide and looked over at Valentine who was seated next to Easton on the other couch. Valentine was leaned back with his arms hanging on the back of the couch and one of his feet was on the edge of the table.
"Take a seat. We won't bite." Valentine looked amused when he shrugged, "Can't speak for Easton, of course..."
I frowned, moving around the couch to sit down beside Violet who was sitting in her straight posture with her arms crossed and a leg crossed over the other's knee. She glanced in my direction, an eyebrow rising rather slowly. She just kept staring at me and I was switching back and forth of glancing at her to the others who were not noticing Violet.
I glanced at her stoic expression again but this time I mouthed, "What?" and yet she still stared at me.
It took her a moment longer, but then the she-wolf broke her silence.
"You really are Thea's family. She, too, was a nervous little bunny. Pissed me off how fragile she was."
"Yeah, well..." Jonah was snatching away the beer that Easton had pulled out of the twelve pack and let himself sit heavily on the cushion beside Violet. He didn't see the golden-narrowed-eyed glared coming from Easton. "Back then you were pissed about a lot of things. Most of them pertaining to Thea. Especially when Auric was starting to have the hots for that 'nervously fragile little bunny'."
Violet rolled her eyes upward, shaking her head a little before scoffing, "Yeah. Just proved his weakness for helpless things."
Jonah grinned as he was sipping his beer and kept his eyes on his she-wolf friend. The she-wolf narrowed her eyes, obviously seeing a comeback coming.
Jonah chuckled, "Some helpless female she turned out to be, Vi. Considering Thea is one of the most lethal Advanced Hunters known in the Supernatural world."
He added after taking another sip and reaching for a potato chip, "Auric obviously saw what you couldn't---Ow!"
Jonah rubbed the back of his head, growling at his friend who was scowling back at him. She retorted that he was making it sound like Violet was bitter about how Thea and Auric ended up together.
"That had nothing to do with what I was trying to say, you asshole!"
"Oh yeah...?" Jonah raised a brow, nodding, "Go on then... Finish what you were going to say."
Violet narrowed her eyes, a growl rumbling out of her. She turned away to me rather abruptly so I ended up leaning back from her. Her green eyes eyed me up and down, lifting her chin and sniffed, "I was just going to say that I admired when Thea got her head out of her ass and was able to defend herself. Kinda like I hope you're able to do."
She then turned to Jonah, growling, "There."
Jonah was chewing on another chip rather slowly, his eyelids lowered half-mast. He then broke into a laugh, shaking his head while lifting up his beer to his lips.
"You crack me up, Vi. We all know you adore Thea. She'd be your bestie if it weren't for your reputation of needing to---" he lifted two fingers on each hand up to air quote, "'Hate her'."
Violet's lips reeled in, lip curling as she smacked Jonah again.
"Stop talking, Jonah!"
"Easy, Vi..." Valentine warned, shaking his head for her to calm down. That Jonah was only joking and that everyone knew she no longer had hard feelings about Thea and Dennison ending up together.
Without looking away from talking to Violet, Valentine raised an arm to the side to snag away the beer bottle from Easton who had almost been able to take a drink. The blond frowned, blinking repeatedly at his empty hand then glared to the side at his friend.
"You take shit too seriously. Relax. Maybe you should get laid more often."
The she-wolf raised a brow, snapping, "Oh... That's the remedy then, huh? Good to know that Athena's got you in a better mood every-fucking-day, Valentine."
The hulk-sized guy's eyes widened while the rest of us all looked at him with surprised looks. Well... Easton and I did anyway. Jonah... took it a little differently.
"Wait for a Holy-fucking-minute!" he waved his arms in front of him and then sat forward to lower a brow as he eye-balled Valentine.
He squinted, "You're fucking Athena? As in... Athena? The grudge-holding, bipolar, nasty-attitude redhead who was basically the reason my sister-in-law is one of the most fearsome beings to behold?"
Valentine's eyelids lowered half-mast as Jonah was talking. The guy's face looking more bored than Dennison when trying to make conversation with me.
"...Yes," Valentine finally answered, and Jonah lost his shit.
He jumped up, laughing hysterically---so much that he held onto his stomach and leaned back to emphasize just how funny he found this. I lowered a brow at the older Dennison twin while Violet rolled her eyes (did you expect anything else?), Easton was sneaking towards the coffee table to grab another beer, and Valentine leaned forward to slap Easton's hand.
Easton sucked in a breath, baring his teeth at his friend in warning who shoved away the twelve pack from the blond's reach and instead grabbed onto Easton's wrist. Valentine then shoved a glass of Sprite into his friend's hand before muttering, "Drink up."
When he turned away from an appalled Easton, Valentine shouted, "Alright, Jonah! Enough already!"
He had to wait a minute longer for the other to calm down. Jonah eventually was able to sit down and wipe his fingers under his eyes from the laughing tears. Valentine raised a brow, questioning if Jonah was done. When Jonah nodded, grinning from ear-to-ear, Valentine leaned back against the couch.
"It's not that fucking big of a deal---Thanks for that by the way, Violet."
"My pleasure," the snooty she-wolf bit back.
Valentine glanced at Easton frowning at the glass of Sprite fizzing away then Valentine looked at us across the way.
"It just kinda happened... okay? Well... Actually, it took some convincing on my part since the damn woman is stubborn as fuck."
"She was holding out on you?" Jonah raised a brow.
Valentine shrugged a shoulder. "You could say that. She wasn't really giving me the time of day to even just talk to her. Except for times when there's drinking involved and someone challenges her to chugging."
Violet boredly pointed out, "That's only you."
"That's my point, Vi!" he shot her look then sighed, shrugging a shoulder. "Athena's... well... I don't know..."
Jonah suddenly sat up, scoffing, "Oh my fucking God!"
We all looked at him---minus Easton who was sniffing the Sprite from the rim---and Jonah cried, "You're in love with her!"
We looked back to Valentine who remained silent other than the scowl he was giving Jonah. Patiently waiting, I glanced at Easton now making a face like a child after tasting the Sprite. I grinned a bit before returning to Valentine rolling his eyes and reluctantly admitting that there may be some unfamiliar feelings for Athena.
Jonah scoffed, sitting back and crossed his arms. He shook his head, clicking his tongue against the back of his teeth.
"Whata disappointment you are, Valentine. You were my hero up until now."
"Shut up, Jonah."
Valentine turned and smacked Easton's hand when the blond was leaning over to grab a beer.
"God dammit, why do you keep doing that!?" Easton growled.
Valentine lifted a finger to point at his friend's face. He raised his brows, sternly answering, "Because you're impulsive when you're drunk."
"The fuck...?"
"Yeah. I said it. I've seen how you get when you drink, Easton. You get shit-faced drunk to where you run off somewhere before finding out that you found someone to spend the night with or get into fights that were unnecessary."
Easton opened his mouth to argue but Valentine added with a final tone, "That you always start!"
The blond narrowed his eyes, turning away to cross his arms in front of his chest as he let himself lean back against the couch. Whata child he was being. It was cute... in a way... but still.
Valentine's gaze was on me and I could feel it. I glanced at him and he directed to the others while keeping eye contact.
"Besides, Easton... You're one of my best friends. I'm not going to stand aside and watch you fall down the rabbit hole."
I smiled, feeling myself relax a little in my spot. Easton, on the other hand, was grumbling, "What the fuck are you talking about!? What the hell does a rabbit hole have to do with me wanting a God damn beer!?"
Valentine ignored Easton, leaning forward to pour himself a glass of Sprite and then another that he handed over to me. I thanked him before looking at the she-wolf beside me. Violet shrugged, reaching over to grab one of the empty glasses on the table and poured herself some Sprite. She lifted the cup, sitting back a little and then glanced at Jonah.
The older Dennison twin looked at her in confusion before glancing at Easton who was still annoyed and grumbling to himself. With the realization of what was going on, Jonah also poured himself a glass of Sprite and lifted it upward towards the center of us all.
"Here's to saving our livers!"
I laughed with Valentine, Violet barely chuckling but was clearly amused. I looked over at Easton who was still unhappy with not being able to have a beer. When I pointed out to him that we were waiting on him, Easton looked at me with this warning look in his eyes.
To challenge him back, I raised a brow and grit my teeth as I said, "Drink the damn Sprite, Ease, or the window gets locked..." His brows shot up, eyes wide from what I was referring to. "Permanently."
The other three glanced between us before Easton groaned with a scrunched nose and snatched the glass of soda up. He huffed, stretching his arm out to hold up the glass like the rest of us. After clinking our glasses together, we drank the soda and crunched on some chips, talking about anything and everything that was brought up.
Oddly enough it felt nice to be able to socialize without thinking about the secret I had. It was actually a really good feeling to think that the Six were starting to become my friends too.
I smiled to myself, looking into the empty glass I was holding, enjoying this sweet moment.
"So Valentine..." Jonah piped up, stuffing a chip into his mouth. He glanced at Valentine, raising a brow, and asked, "You don't mind if I chat with Athena next time, do you?"
"The fuck for?" Valentine growled, a small sign of territorial behavior.
Jonah, not looking at the annoyed friend, reached to grab another chip and stuffed it into his mouth as he shrugged, "I dunno... Maybe I can convince her to give you back your balls---Ack!"
He got a handful of chips thrown in his face. And Easton scowled, telling Jonah, "You better fucking clean that up, Dip Shit. I just swept."
The Were across from the blond scoffed, pointing at himself that he didn't make the mess. That Valentine should pick up the chips. He then pointed at me and whined, "Make Kale do it! He's the guest!"
I frowned, reeling my neck back. Jonah stuck his tongue out at me.
Easton shook his head, ordering Jonah to pick up the mess.
"But I still don't see why Kale can't do it..." Jonah whined, obediently picking off bits of the chips from his shirt. "You seem to like him better than me. And here I thought we were friends, Easton."
Easton narrowed his eyes, sniffing, "Just pick up the damn chips, Jonah, or I swear I'll kick your ass."
He then glanced at me while directing to Jonah (and the other two I'm assuming), "And he's more of a best friend."
"But I'm your best friend too!" Jonah whined, childishly tossing the chips onto the table (which he'd have to pick up again).
Easton nodded, "Yeah... I know." then shifted those piercing blue eyes to mine again.
And for the first time since the arrival of his friends, Easton smiled---not a smirk, not a grin, but an actual smile--- with a twinkle in his eyes, "Red's just better."
My eyes widened and I swallowed hard.
It may not have sounded like much... But to me, it was more. Easton's trust in me was growing. Easton's relationship with me was what I had been hoping to progress in. It was starting to show that there were moments such as these when Easton could be the old Easton. The one who I know was still in there somewhere and would have been smiling twenty-four-seven.
'Red's just better' he said. It was a very Easton way to say that I mattered to him. Somehow.
I felt my heart beating faster than normal. It was just suddenly palpitating at an unnatural pace. At that moment... without warning... I just realized something and it now only made it harder to keep my secret from the very person who couldn't know about it. Who could make my world suddenly crumble bit by bit.
Oh, crap...
I'm falling in love with Easton.
