Chapter 32: Home At Last
"De fact dey made me captain of zis ship? I hate it...", facepalming onto the steering wheel, which in effect, had steered the ship away from the river bank. "Huh? Who said we could move?", thought Ollie, "But at least we're moving in the right direction". The ship had turned backwards and was now heading down the river towards the fortress. "Look at the place! The dock's been renovated!", shouted Sindo from the crows nest. Previously, the dock was just some weak, soggy wooden planks on top of some marshy grass but now, it was a proper path made of marble and concrete with plenty of room for boats to park.
Meanwhile inside the fortress, the rest of the crew were cleaning in anticipation for Ruth's return. "Taylor, how's the upper floor going?", asked Scarlett. "Um, okay I guess? I've got Cortex chasing Crash around for something so stupid and... Horace! Get that piece of furniture out of your mouth!". Horace looked stunned as he spat the chair arm out, it crashing down onto the floor, covered in all this saliva. "I just cleaned that...", groaned Taylor. "Do you need some help?", thought Scarlett. "Yes...". So she sent Coco upstairs to give Taylor's cleaning crew a hand.
"Taylor they're here! They're all climbing off the ship... But I can't see Karla or Jasmine". Taylor quickly rushed down the stairs to see what Scarlett was talking about. "You're right, where are they?", wondered Taylor. "Oh there they are, the African girl has them", answered Scarlett, "I think that's Ruth". There was then a cry from the upper level again, from Coco... "Horace no! Get away from that!". So Taylor hurried back up to see what he could do with Horace. "What should we do?!", he shouted down to Scarlett. "Tie him up somewhere". So Taylor took Horace into the kitchen and tied him to one of the thick curtains in there... In hopes that Horace wouldn't eat up the curtains too.
Then it was time, the front doors of Unit A opened, with Selvian leading the congregation and Ruth trailing along at the back with me and Jasmine. "And this is where she lives?", thought Ruth. "I know, it looks a bit commercial but there are rooms that look more like her dwelling", explained Selvian. Everyone was not out of their line and spread out everywhere in the main room. "Well Ruth's here now... The one who has saved us", stated Ruth. "Well, I think we have time to introduce you to everyone now", whispered Selvian into her ear... "But then where is Bianca?", he called out. "Oh Bianca? She's looking after Horace", replied Scarlett. "That's okay, Ruth knows her anyway", thought Selvian.
"Hang on all ya party animals!", shouted Sindo from the crowd, "Don't ya all think she should put the girls down first?". Orville followed on, "She needs to be free to be fun!". Sindo and Orville approached Ruth, giving her a gentle wave and then escorting her to the bedroom. "Oh yes, erm... Put 'er on the bed and then... Put the blonde on, er, Orville, get a mattress out and put in on the floor". Orville nodded. "Sure thing, grandpa Sindo". He was the tallest in the crew and so could reach up very high, he got the mattress off the top of the cupboard and slammed it down onto the wooden floor, leaving Ruth coughing after dust had risen from it. Ruth eventually came out of her coughing and placed us where we needed to be in order to rest.
She then followed Sindo and Orville back to the main room where she was to be introduced to everyone in the fortress. Scarlett told her to sit on the chair they had set up for her bedside the lift column, while they all lined up in front of her. And so they all started greeting her, each with a unique, individual quirk. At first, she was a bit overwhelmed meeting all the guards but when it got near to the end of the line, she was getting used to them and actually started talking to some of them. "She's not bad after all", thought Ruth. "Who's dat?", asked Sindo. "Karla". All the guards and guests had a look of astonishment on their faces. "So you believe she can do good?!", asked Scarlett. "I always believed that but I just wished she would find another way to do it... But she's been through a lot and so I'm not going to complain today".
There was then a knock on the front door. "Oh, uh... Do we need to send them to the security centre first?", asked Ollie. "Er nah, just let 'em in", said Orville. So they all sent Taylor to open the door for the new arrivals. The first pair to come in were Harry and Joseph, who appeared to be over their previous squabble with each other because one of them beat the other in chess. The second pair to come in were Lex and Sandy who were looking brighter and bubblier than ever, as if evil Karla didn't even touch them. "What's going on here?", asked Lex. "We are ordaining our groundskeeper", said Sindo. "Wait... Groundskeeper?", asked Ruth. "After all that has happened with evil Karla, we need you here". Ruth was starting to become unsure of herself again. "But I can't stay here, I have to go back for year twelve". All the guards started chanting, "You can", one after the other.
Ruth was speechless for a number of reasons. Mainly she was unsure of how she was going to cope with her VCE demands in the facilities and people or teddies currently around her. "Don't worry Ruth, we'll all make sure you can go to school", said Scarlett. "I know driving takes like six hours, right?" said Orville, "Well, I'll fly yer to and from school every day!". Sindo added, "You'll have a section in Karla's library for all your homework". Then Ollie said, "Loretta and I gon' feed you breakfast, lunch and dinner... And pack you some good lookin' snacks too!". Joseph piped in, "We'll make sure all your books, pens and computers are in working order". They all finally chanted in unison, "We'll get you to school!". Ruth had a heartfelt look at each and everyone of them, "Thanks... But you don't have to... Alright, okay, I'll accept your offers".
