Chapter 20: An Unusual Betrayal
The days were certainly becoming darker and darker, literally... The sky was so grey outside and the landscape looked wet, as if it had been raining overnight. Although the days were darker, Dreamy Ruth had yet again given me hope with such an insightful dream. So from where we left off, I spent about an hour and half, trying to get that massive dream fully written down into my journal. I took so long that I was interrupted by guards of various descriptions, old and new. The first guards that came by, I was patient with... But as more of them came, they were starting to make me furious. Their needs were so petty, things like "can you salt the cake?" and "Come and take dis coackroach out of my food" and eventually... I locked the door.
When I eventually able to come out of my bedroom, I saw no one around and my first thought was "where is everyone?". Then I heard some talking coming out of the library. It was not a pretty sight when I stepped into that library, everyone was gathered around the crystal ball, all trying to have a jab at getting Dreamy Ruth to show up. "Yer-heh-her, ya tryin' to take our little girl away from us?!", accused Orville. Even Crash went up to the crystal ball and tried poking at it. Then Horace went up to the crystal ball and slammed his teeth onto it. "Nooooooooooooo!" I screamed while running up and violently pushing everyone out of the way. I couldn't help but start crying, the crystal ball was now broken and so Dreamy Ruth couldn't communicate with me in the waking reality anymore. "Why would you all betray me?", I said, suddenly turning all quite and focusing my gaze on Sindo, who I was shocked with the most, provided that he was the keeper and maintainer of the crystal ball. I thought I knew heartbreak from Ruth... But nothing could compare to this act... My best friends and mentors turning on me.
I was too upset to stay in the library and so wilted away back to my bedroom. I didn't know what to do with myself anymore and so I just opened my dream journal again, mourning at the horrific acts that caused the destruction of Dreamy Ruth's real world connection. But then, by accidentally flicking to the next page, I found some writing in there... That wasn't written by me. This is what the short passage read:
"Don't cry for my absence... When people can't work out what's wrong with you, they turn against you. Sadly even best friends do that, the word 'end' is in 'friend'. Just go by what you think you need to do. I certainly know what you need to do and I'm here. Why don't you leave them for a while? You need it. Go to the ancient ruins and when you come back, they'll realise why they started with you in the first place. Take this your dream journal with you and that's how I'll communicate with you".
Dreamy Ruth always has a way of reaching out to me, no matter what the circumstance. Still, I was traumatised at the event of the crystal ball. It wasn't so much now that Dreamy Ruth was threatened but it was the fact that she was threatened by those who dwelled with me. As she said, my friends weren't acting much like friends in this instance. I bet their cockiness had come from the fact that they could never see Dreamy Ruth themselves, and so they were jealous. It was never my intention to hide her presence from them but then this was a condition I had to abide by... So who do I remain faithful to? The more I stayed here, the more resentment would come from the group and so I proceeded to load into a small backpack all the items I thought I would need for the trek into the ancient ruins. The first most important thing was that dream journal. Other things I packed included a collection of tissues, nail clippers, a jacket, a pen, a fork and some water. I had decided to go more practical than with all this magic, I knew I had my ice abilities on me from the dream anyway, if things got dire.
