Chapter 2
Just as I had expected, there was a lone car waiting in the pick up line; a familiar old red pickup that belonged to my parents. Letting out a shaky breath, I adjusted my bag on my shoulder and approached the car cautiously.
Neither of my parents said a word as I climbed into the backseat and set my bag down.
Well... This was awkward...
Biting my lip, I waited as patiently as I could for them to tell me what was going on as we slowly pulled out of the parking lot.
An uncomfortable silence settled over us. I shifted in my seat and cleared my throat, hinting for them to hurry up and tell me.
We'd been on the road for a few minutes when my father began to speak.
"Demarco... No matter what happens... I want you to know that... Your mother and I... We love you very, very much."
I gulped. That did NOT sound good at ALL.
I cut my eyes at him. "That sounds awful. What did you do?"
My dad sneered at me from the rear view mirror. "We didn't do anything! This had always been decided... We just hadn't got the chance to tell you yet..."
Frustrated, I glared at the both of them. "Well what are you waiting for, an invitation? Tell me already!"
I began to feel more and more worried as my parents both exchanged glances. I swallowed hard, not knowing what to expect.
"Actually," my mother began hesitantly. "We thought... It'd be better if we showed you."
I bit my lip. Something wasn't right... No... Not even close... The mere thought of all the terrible possibilities that it could be made my skin crawl.
What on Earth had these two kept from me?
