The Heat of Summer

Nira woke up early that morning, and after hunting with her dragons, headed towards the shop. The sun had just recently risen, and riders had already taken to the skies for training.
She landed before the shop, opening the door and striding inside with Eclipse and Wisp. The Dartfang was fast asleep on the floor, her emerald tail draped over her nose. Her wings were folded neatly against her back, rising and falling with her breaths.

"Good morning, Nira. Did you sleep well?" The old man asked.

"Oh, yes."

"Did you hear about the Daggerfang migration? It's coming through tomorrow."

"I did! I was going to ask if I could miss some work because of it. A friend and I are going to go watch them." Nira asked hopefully.

"Of course."

"Thank you, sir. I'll work extra hard today, to make up for it."

The man exhaled slightly out of his nose, almost a laugh.

That day was much less eventful than the last, and Nira was mostly just doing simple deliveries. The day was hot, magnified Eclipse's silver scales. By the end of the day, they had heated up like an oven. It didn't bother her, as she was a Fire-Class dragon, but Nira was in a sweat.
Nira wiped her brow, her pale blonde hair sticking to her forehead. She patted Eclipse's head absentmindedly, quickly drawing back her hand from the heat. The dragon was thriving, the occasional spurt of flame blasting from her nostrils.

"Goodness, it's hot. Let's get back to the shop!" Nira exclaimed.

Eclipse banked sharply, diving downwards to the shop. Her talons struck the hard earth, sending up plumes of dust. She bent down slightly, allowing Nira to slide off.
The ground was hard, cracking in the summer heat. Nira quickly pushed open the door, to enter the shade of the shop.

"That's the last order, sir. Is there anything else that you need?" She asked, pushing a strand of hair out of her eyes.

She was certainly not at her best, her silvery blonde hair a mess, her clothes ruffled, and sweat running down her face. She was nothing like the girls who used to go to her school, always obsessed with keeping up their appearance. That's why, after her parents left, she had just stopped going. Nobody there seemed to like her, making fun of her love for dragons, and failure to care about much else.
She always had awful grades. The teacher had always said that she was a clever girl, but that she just didn't apply herself. That she wouldn't be able to graduate if she didn't pick up her act. They didn't like her much either. Maybe it was the fact that Eclipse would occasionally show up at the window, tapping it with her nose. Nira would turn a deep red, pretending that she didn't know the dragon. But everyone knew that she was hers.

"No, there's nothing else to do. You may leave." The old man assured.

Nira nodded, quickly bidding her goodbyes. With a wave, she leapt onto Eclipse's back and out into the blazing sunlight. Eclipse could tell where she wanted to go, just by the first direction that Nira had asked her to go. To the lake.
Eclipse's claws sunk into softer ground near the bank. There was a bit of shade there, but not much. The ground wasn't cracked. Nira quickly slid off, removing her boots and peeling off her socks. She had no swimwear, but her clothes would work.
She slid into the lake, the water feeling colder than it actually was in comparison to the heat. Eclipse's tail lashed in excitement. Nira barely ever went swimming, and the large dragon loved to play in the water.
Eclipse followed after Nira, her wings floating on the surface as she paddled with her feet. Although she loved the heat, water was a fun place to play. It wasn't common for Fire-Class dragons to enjoy it, but Silver Schwers were an exception.
Eclipse dove under the water, swimming beneath Nira. She surfaced before her friend, spitting a stream of water in Nira's face.
Nira laughed, splashing the silver dragon in the face. The lake was always a good place to unwind after a long day.
