Freestyle Event

We have some more wonderful art of Triton by DragonWriter664 ! Thanks for all of this great art!

Nira sat with her back against a scraggly tree by the lake, a notebook and pencil in her hand. She had worked overtime that day, leaving her with only some of the day left. Unfortunately, it was very hot that day, too.
Frustrated, she slammed her pencil down. She had no idea how she'd do the Freestyle Event. Her mind was an empty void.

"Any ideas, Eclipse?" She asked absentmindedly, knowing she'd get no real response.

Eclipse snorted, raising her head. She had been fast asleep, basking in the hot sun. She laid her head down again, closing her sapphire eyes.

"Thanks." Nira sighed.

An idea lit her mind, and she lifted her pencil and wrote it down, stared at it for a minute, and scribbled it out. This is annoying. Why can't I just think of something? She wondered silently.

"We don't really have any special tricks, but we could probably do some dangerous flips blindfolded." She suggested to nobody in particular.

Eclipse purred in agreement, pausing momentarily from chewing on a stick. Seconds after, she continued gnawing until she snapped it in half.
Nira picked up her pencil again, sketching out an idea for a route. On the fresh paper, she drew a curling line that would show the path from a side view, with notes on how the flips would play out. It started with two barrel-rolling front flips, one tight backflip, several more front flips and so on. From another person's viewpoint, it would look like it was random movements, which would appear to be more dangerous.
Nira had faith that it would win, if she pulled it off perfectly. Her hopeful thoughts were interrupted by a loud snap.

"Wisp!" She shouted.

The small Windracer had stolen her pencil, soaring in circles around her. He had chewed half of it off, and flew just out of Nira's reach with the other half.
She snorted and stood up, but Wisp flew higher. Laughing, Nira jumped higher. But due to the unfortunate fact that she didn't have wings, she couldn't reach.

"Eclipse, a little help, maybe?" Nira suggested.

Eclipse snorted out a cloud of smoke and stood up, snatching the pencil out of her smaller counterpart's mouth. Nira grinned, scratching the silver dragon behind her ears.

"Ready to practice this? No blindfolds yet, of course." She offered.

Eclipse stretched her broad wings, standing up. Nira followed, climbing onto the worn saddle. She had almost enough money to buy a new one. Originally, she had been planning to quit her job after she got what she needed, but she hated to admit that she actually liked it. The old man was good company, and albeit his odd way of talking about random topics, she honestly enjoyed their conversations.
She tapped her heels lightly on Eclipse's side scales. She never felt the need to kick very hard. 'You won't hurt the dragon!' She had heard countless people tell new riders. But the truth was, she never felt the need to do so. She had gained a trust with Eclipse by rescuing her.
Several years before, Nira had heard a roaring tearing across the plains. Of course, being the curious child she was, followed it. Over several hills, hidden in a patch of tall grass, was a badly wounded dragon. A Silver Schwer, with a wide gash cutting deep into her neck. In her forelegs, she clasped a hatchling tightly.
Young Nira had put all caution to the wind. The words of many teachers echoed in her head. 'Never approach a wild dragon!' But she was sure that a dragon that badly hurt couldn't do anything. And the other was only a hatchling. Carefully, she crept through the grass, staying in the dragon's line of vision and not making any sudden movements.
The mother looked up with mint-coloured eyes. Wide, afraid, pupils merely slits in a sea of green and blue. But she didn't blast Nira with fire. She just stared as the girl put a hand on her head, stroking her just before the horns. A puff of smoke spiraled out of her nostrils and into the azure sky.
Nira watched as the life drained out of the dragon. The silver creature's breaths grew completely still, and her child grew panicked. The stillness of her chest struck some instinct, and it shrieked.
Cautiously, Nira inched over to the hatchling. Judging by the spines on its back, it was a female. About the size of a large cat, it definitely wasn't too dangerous. She let her shriek for a few minutes, waiting until she tired herself out.
Nira scooped up the small dragon. Her pearly silver scales hung over protruding bones, and she was much too light. Nira's parents didn't really care that she had brought home a dragon. Really, they didn't care about anything.
The hatchling grew larger every day, gaining the weight that she needed. Her horns grew long and sharp, and her scales bright. And she was named Eclipse.
Ever since she was rescued, Eclipse trusted Nira greatly. It was a bond stronger than training. But some things did need training. Like the Test.
Eclipse leapt off of the ground, flapping her wings with all of her might. She was determined, and so was her rider. She narrowed her azure eyes and started to climb high into the air, until the lake was far beneath them. She pulled herself into a dive, barrel-rolling towards the water with no fear of striking it.
About halfway down, Eclipse and Nira began their front flips. Still maintaining the rolling, it was rather impressive. She finished the second flip seconds before she hit the water, and shot open her wings.
Eclipse's claws skimmed the water. It was a very close dive, but that made it all the more interesting. The soared over the water for a few seconds before making the tightest backflip she'd ever done. It was impressive, very much so, until she accidentally crashed face first into the lake, dumping Nira into the water.
Nira pushed Eclipse's wing off of her, as it was holding her underwater.

"Good work! It was only a little fall.." She cheered, pushing a strand of wet hair out of her eyes.

The Freestyle Event proved to be one of the hardest to train for. They had to constantly take time to practice the other events so they wouldn't lose their skills, and doing crazy flips while being blindfolded wasn't the easiest thing ever. They weren't perfect, but Nira was confident that she'd at least impress the judges.

Hey everyone! It appears that I've had some creative inspiration and have lost my writers block! So I basically wrote a thousand words in a very short amount of time. Hey, better than not being able to write at all!
