the weirdo on maple street pt.1
The girl sat on the couch as we interrogated her. "Is there a number we can call for your parents?" Mike asks, "Where's your hair? Do you have cancer?" Dustin questions, earning a slap from Mike. "Did you run away?" I ask. "Are you in some kind of trouble?" Mike follows. "Is that blood?" Lucas asks, pointing to a stain on her shirt only for Mike to slap his hand away, "Stop it! You're freaking her out!" Mike shouts. "She's freaking me out!" Lucas retorts. "I bet she's deaf," Dustin cuts in and claps in front of her face making her jump back. "All right, that's enough, all right? She's just scared and cold." Mike scolded. Mike walks over to his laundry basket, "Here, these are clean. Okay?" He exclaims, giving her the clothes I wore the other day.
The girl stood up and was about to pull off her clothes in front of us, "No, no, no! See over there? That's the bathroom. Privacy. Get it?" I ask her as she walks to the bathroom, Mike following.
"This is mental," Dustin exclaims, "At least she can talk," Mike adds. "She said "no" and "yes," Your three-year-old sister says more." I retort. "She tried to get naked," Dustin continues. "There's something seriously wrong with her. Like wrong in the head. I bet she escaped from Pennhurst," Lucas says. "From where?" Mike asks, "The nuthouse in Kerley County," I reply. "You got a lot of family there?" Dustin asks jokingly, "bite me," I respond snarkily. "Seriously though, think about it. That would explain her shaved her and why she's so crazy," Lucas explains. "Why she went like--" I exclaim, fake taking my shirt off. "She's an escapee is the point. She's probably a psycho," Lucas adds. "Like Michael Myers," I follow, "Exactly! We should've never brought her here." Lucas exclaims. "So you just wanted to leave her out in that storm?" Mike asks. "Yes! We went out to find Will, not another problem," I retort. "I think we should tell your mom," I demand. "I second that," Dustin and Lucas say in unison. "Who's crazy now?" Mike asks. "how is that crazy?" I ask. "Cause, we weren't supposed to be out tonight, remember?" Mike asks. "So?" Lucas retorts. "So if I tell my mom and she tells your moms..." Mike implies.
"Oh, man." Dustin exclaims, "Our houses become Alcatraz," Lucas follows. "My mom won't care," I mumble. "Exactly. We'll never find Will. All right, here's the plan. She sleeps here tonight." Mike starts. "You're letting a girl that isn't y/n--"
"Just listen! In the morning, she sneaks around my house, goes to the front door and rings my doorbell. My mom will answer and no exactly what to do. She'll send her back to Pennhurst or wherever she comes from. We'll be totally in the clear. And tomorrow night, we go back out. And this time, we find Will," Mike explains, cutting Dustin off.
I hesitantly walked up to Nancy's room, knowing that if Steve was still here, that's where he'd be. I knock on the door. "Yes?" Nancy asks from the other side. "Hi Nancy. Is Steve in there?" I ask. "Steve? Steve was never here," She laughs awkwardly. "Is that so? Then, was he climbing into someone else's room?" I ask. I hear groans, making me laugh. A few seconds later, Steve walked out of the room, his hair a mess. "What?" he snaps. "Jeez, I just need a ride home," I scoff. "Can't you just spend the night here?" he groans. "I don't wanna," I reply. "Did something happen?" he asks. "I don't wanna talk about it. Can you please just drive me home?" I beg. Steve rolls his eyes. "Fine. I'll just walk home and go missing too," I shrug. "Fine. Meet me in the car," he scoffs. I nod before making my way to the car. I quickly put my bike in the trunk before hopping in.
A couple of minutes later, Steve walks out of the house and gets in the drivers seat. "Wanna tell me why you wouldn't just spend the night here? Usually you'd beg to sleepover," he smirks. "I just don't. Okay? Will you drop it?" I beg. "Like, did Mike say something, or--" he continued. "Steve, stop!" I shout. "Yeah, okay. Okay," he nods. The rest of the ride was silent.
