Just Last December
"He seems to think a date can make up for all the neglect."
Laf sighs softly through the phone. I was on my lunch break at work, facetiming Lafayette while I ate because he wanted to know how we were doing. He was in Italy with Hercules right now, living his best life.
"I don't know what else you expect, though. This is his first real relationship. He's not going to know how to make amends." He explains.
I take a bite out of my sandwich and shrug. "I don't know. It was a really nice date, honestly, it's just.."
"You don't feel like he's truly sorry?"
I sigh. "Possibly. I mean, it just depends on how he continues from now on. Is he going to go back to hanging out with Carrie and friends every single night? Or is he going to start coming home at reasonable hours and spend time with me?"
Laf thinks for a moment and then shakes his head. "I don't know, I never really cared to learn much about John up until like last December."
I nod, smiling gently. "We were such different people in December. So happy. All we really needed was each other. I don't know, I miss it sometimes."
"Which is fine, high school sounds like it was a lot easier than college is for you guys." Laf suggests. "Have you thought about going on a break maybe?"
I raise an eyebrow. "You want me to break up with John?" I ask, and he immediately shakes his head.
"No, no, that's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying maybe take a couple weeks away from each other, figure out everything you need to fix separately, and then come back with a plan."
Truth is, yes, I have thought about doing exactly that. I think it's a really healthy way to solve our problems, rather than fighting about it constantly.
But I was scared. If we did go on break, who's to say John would come back? Maybe he would enjoy that break, and just end it permanently. I definitely did not want that.
"Um, no, I haven't given it much thought." I lie.
"Well, you don't have to, but I think you should at least consider it. Maybe talk with John about it. If he completely hates it, throw the idea out and figure out a new way to solve your problems." Laf nods.
There's no way in hell I'm going to suggest that to John, because he's either going to assume I want things to end between us, or he's going to like the idea a bit too much.
"Yeah, okay, I'll talk to him." I nod. "How are you and Herc, though? Any trouble in paradise?"
Laf chuckles. "The only trouble we've had was in Germany. I absolutely hated it there, and did not want to be there any longer, but Herc loved it." He explains.
I nod. "You and your French prejudice." I tease.
"I do not see a problem, France is superior to any place, and that's just a fact." He huffs.
"How'd you guys like Ireland, though? Did you get to meet Herc's parents?"
He nods. "Oh yeah, they were really nice. Scary people at first, but they did like me in the end, so it was okay. His grandma did not like me, though."
"Oh, why?" I ask, taking another bite of my food.
"Old fashioned." He says simply and I nod, understanding. "Well, I'll leave you to get back to work, then. Let me know how the talk with John goes. I miss you guys!"
"Miss you too, Laf." I chuckle softly. "Say hi to Herc for me." He nods and I hang up the phone, setting it face down on the table.
I sigh and sit back in my chair, throwing the rest of my sandwich away. Just as I reach for my phone to text John, Benjamin comes into the break room. "Hey, Alex, you're needed in Patrick's office." He says.
I look up and nod at him. "I guess this is the day Patrick Henry finally fires me, eh?"
Ben rolls his eyes and chuckles. "Please, Patrick loves you. Just go see him."
I chuckle softly. "Thanks, Franklin." He nods and exits the room and I stick my phone in my pocket. I can talk to John later.
Timeskip brought to you by my math class (it's so quiet)
"Honey I'm hooome." I call out as I enter the apartment. I saw John's car in the parking lot, which hopefully meant he was here.
I shut the door and feel a pair of arms wrap around me, and I chuckle gently. "Welcome back, love. How was work?" John asks.
I smile a bit wider and turn towards him. "Oh, it was fine. Couple annoying calls, promotion, I had a pretty good sandwich-"
"Wait, what did you say?" He asks.
"Hm? Oh, I had a great sandwich from the deli, you should try it someti-"
"No, not that, the thing before that." He chuckles, rolling his eyes playfully.
"Oh, right! I got a promotion!" I say.
John smiles. "What? That's amazing! I'm so proud of you, Alex."
I smile back up at him. I was glad he was home, so I could actually share this with him. It'd been a while.
"So how was school?" I ask.
"Well, it was the same as always. We started painting landscapes today." He says, sighing softly.
"Don't you hate painting landscapes?" I ask, tilting my head.
He nods and then chuckles. "It's fine, though. I went to art school to become a more rounded painter, did I not?"
I chuckle softly. "Yes, I suppose you did. And thank God for that." I give him a quick peck on the lips, but he pulls me in for a longer kiss. I smile and hum into the kiss, the both of us swaying gently.
I pull away and smile up at him. "I'm really glad you're home, ya know."
He looks down at me and nods. "I'm sorry I haven't been home much." He says quietly.
Before I could answer, there was a persistent knocking on the door. I raise an eyebrow. "Are you expecting anyone?" I ask.
He shakes his head. "No, I cancelled my plans for tonight." He says, looking at the door.
I sigh and pull myself out of his arms, to which he whines, and go to open the door. Not going to lie, I'm going to be very upset if Carrie is on the other side of it.
I open the door and the girl on the other side smiles brightly at me and John. "What's up, new roomies!"
