WHEN ESTHER YASUI HAD been told that her mother and stepfather would be spending the holidays without her, she was thrilled. Her grandmother, who'd always watch her on occasions like this, was an inattentive old bat who wouldn't notice if Esther had gone and died in a ditch, much less if she disappeared herself from her upstairs bedroom to party with college boys. She'd be able to spend New Year's Eve with the nearby fraternity guys, getting wasted on their legally obtained alcohol, without being dragged back home by the cartilage of her ear.

Then Grandmother Woodrup has to go and come down with something, and she's in no condition to look after a feisty teenager such as Esther. With only two nonrefundable tickets to Australia, Dr and Mrs Woodrup can't bring Esther along with them ( nor do they want to ), so they're left with only one option:

Leave Esther at Barton Academy, where Dr Woodrup works as Headmaster, under the care of Mr Hunham, along with five of the school's ( male ) students. Within days, her winter break has gone from two straight weeks of freedom to a prison sentence.

Instead of partying, drinking, passing out on the floor and waking up in the afternoon, she's being put to work, forced to do schoolwork for a school she doesn't even attend. She's sleeping in an infirmary room with a kid and a teenage boy as sarcastic and rebellious as she is, but she's already too opposed to the whole holding-over thing to even bother trying to bond.

These last few days of 1970 may be the second worst days of Esther's recent life, especially when all of the holdovers get to leave except for her and her snarky roommate.

But, hey, maybe their field trip to Boston will change things.
