Chapter Twenty-one

We got a lot of extra snow for Christmas day. Which the boys got excited about. Though who can blame them? The ground looks like a nice fluffy white blanket, the dead trees branches sparkle from the frost when the sun manages to peek out through the cloudy sky.

It's a beautiful winter day for Christmas.

The boys still aren't yet up and no it was not cause they were up all night trying to see Santa. They never really believed that he existed, the elf's on the other hand? They think those exist. They weren't staying up hoping to see one of those either though. They were up all night trying to find their presents. I heard them opening and shutting doors and cupboards all night. Eventually, they gave up and went to bed which was three hours ago.

So I'm letting them sleep. Besides, it gave me time to get all their presents from the attic which is where I hid them. Honestly? I don't think the boys even know we have an attic.

Which works well for me.

Normally I would be making Christmas breakfast right now but, Cage wanted to surprise them with breakfast from the diner. Besides it's their first Christmas with their Dad maybe them getting breakfast from the diner will become their tradition every year.

I pour myself a cup of freshly brewed coffee adding sugar and milk then go stand by the back patio door. I watch the snowfall and carefully take a sip of my hot coffee. Feeling something nudge my leg I look down and see Muddy. Soon Buddy comes walking into the kitchen, his nails scraping on the hardwood floor as he does.

"You need out?" I ask them.

They both whine and I open the patio door for them to go out. I'm about to close the door when Muddy falls off the deck and into a snowdrift. I quickly place my coffee down on the nearest flat surface and rush outside. I crouch down and grab her out of the snowdrift.

"Oh, girl you okay?" I rub her fur to try and warm her up. "Buddy come on. Let's go inside."

I walk inside the house the snow melts off my socks, leaving wet footprints as I walk. Outside I barely felt the cold now though it feels like my feet are being stabbed by needles. As the numbing coldness starts to go away

"Rory?"

Looking over at the kitchen doorway I see Cage, holding bags full of food.

"Hey, Cage."

I grab the hand towel from off the handle of the dishwasher and rub Muddy down with it. To try and warm her up faster. I set her down on the ground, Buddy comes and snuggles up with her when she lays down, laying his head over her back.

"Why were you outside dressed like that? You could catch a cold." Cage sets the food down on the counter, then pulls me into his chest and wraps his unzipped coat around me.

"I had to help Muddy she fell off the deck and into a snow pile." I move back from him a little and look up at him.

"You should go take a hot shower now so you don't catch a cold." Cage places his hand on my cheek and rubs his thumb back and forth over it.

I shiver from how cold his hand feels and cause of the way that small action makes me feel. I lean into his hand and the comfort he offers.

"Okay," I lean up and softly brush my lips over his.

I pull out of his arms and walk away to go to my room to take a shower. Before I get far, Cage grabs me by the wrist and pulls me back into his muscular chest. He tilts my chin up with his thumb and pointer finger and gives me another kiss, running his tongue softly along my bottom lip. I part my lips for him to slip his tongue in my mouth but he doesn't.

"Okay, now you can go. I just wanted another kiss," Cage murmurs against my mouth.

"Tease," I pout.

This time he doesn't pull me back into his arms as I leave the kitchen.

An hour later I walk into the kitchen, showered and dressed feeling a lot warmer. I lean against the door frame and just take in the scene in front of me. Cage dished out french toast, eggs, and bacon to the boys. While his attention is on adding food to two other plates, Kohl sneaks eggs to the pups.

"I saw that," Cage says and looks up from the plates and over to Kohl.

"What? How? I was being super stealthy," Kohl whines.

"It's a parent thing. They have eyes in the back of their heads," Knox states matter-of-factly and then takes a bite of his bacon.

"Oh yeah and who told you that huh?" I ask and walk over to ruffle his hair.

Though by the looks of it is already a mess.

"Grandma did. Plus it does make sense. You seem to always have a sixth sense for things. How else would you have known we were going to spend most of the night looking for our presents?"

"Knox! Mom didn't know that we did," Kohl shoots a why did you say that look to Knox, who just shrugs.

"She knew. Didn't you Mom?"

"Yeah I knew," I say and kiss them each on the forehead.

I walk over to where I left my now cold coffee and take it to the sink. Dumping it in the sink before I make a fresh cup of coffee. Cage hands me one of the plates and I kiss him on the cheek in thanks.

"Is that how you knew I fed my eggs to the puppies Dad? Cause you have a sixth sense?" Kohl asks, curious.

"Yep, though we call it the parent superpower. Now eat your food so you can open your presents."

Knox and Kohl ate their food as fast as they could. Nearly gave me a heart attack when I think they're about to choke on their food. Now they are waiting impatiently for me to finish mine. Which yes, I am eating pretty slowly on purpose. Cage keeps giving me amused looks knowing exactly what I'm doing.

"Mom come on you're taking forever!" Knox the normally very patient one says impatiently.

"Okay. Okay, I'm done."

"Finally!" The twins sigh in relief and rush off to the living room.

"So how was the food? Eat it slow enough to completely enjoy it?" Cage teases me and flicks me on the nose gently.

"Oh stop it." I shove his chest with a laugh.

I walk ahead of him and before we get in the boys' view he slaps my butt. I look over my shoulder at him in shock. He has mischievous look on his face. I merely shake my head and keep walking, Cage's chuckle following me, filling my chest with warmth at the sound.

It doesn't take long for the boys to open up all their presents. The living room looks like a bomb of wrapping paper and bows went off in it. Muddy and Buddy are playing tug of war with the bows, when one breaks they go looking for a new one. The boys got a bunch of new baseball Lego sets and clothes. Their favorite one is the one of Wrigley Field that Cage bought them. He also got them their own Chicago Cubs jerseys with their names on the back. I got them new baseballs, bats and mitts. Also shortly after we got the pups I got little Chicago Cubs jerseys for them too with their names.

They were such a pain to put on but it was worth it, they are super cute on them.

I need to get a picture of the boys and the pups.

"Do you miss playing?" I ask Cage.

"I do. At first, I was devastated that I wouldn't get to play anymore. It wasn't just a game to me you know? It was my life. I felt like I was a part of something bigger when I played with the team. Though if I was still playing I wouldn't have come back and seen you again or found out I was a father." Cage grabs my hand and laces our fingers together. "Just like how I knew I belonged on that field I know I belong here. Maybe it's way too soon to be saying this but I love you, Rory. I know with my entire being that you're the one."

Maybe it is too soon to be saying that, but you can't choose how quickly you fall for someone. I know I love Cage too even if we have only been back in each other's lives for a little over a month.

Everything with us just feels right.

"I love you too Cage," I say then snuggle up close to him watching our boys.

"Don't even think about it, Knox Ford Williams!"

"What?" Knox innocently looks at me but the mischief dancing in his eyes gives him away.

He glances behind me and silently communicates something to his brother. The next thing I know he's charging at me, I feel two small bodies collide with mine before I go falling over into the snow. Once I'm on the ground Knox and Kohl start throwing snow at me.

I cover my face the best I can and burst out laughing. "You both are in so much trouble!" I tell them but we all know they aren't.

"Keep covering Mom with mo...ahh!"

Before Kohl could finish his sentence Cage pulls him off me and gently plops him down in the snow. Knox stops instantly and takes off running Cage easily catches him and lifts him in the air. Instead of tossing him in the snow like Kohl, he spins him around.

"No!" Knox laughs, gripping onto his father's arms. "Put me down Dad!"

Not even two seconds after he says that does Cages accidentally slip on the snow and they go tumbling down.

I look at Kohl and find him looking at me, he gives me a grin and I give him one back. Both thinking the same thing. Climbing to our feet we run over to Cage and Knox and jump on them, carefully so we don't hurt them. Cage grunts from the weight of us all being on top of him, and wraps his arms around us all the best he can.

"My sons and my girl in my arms there isn't anything better than this." Cages kisses us all on top of the head, the boys both roll their eyes then wiggle their way out of the group hug.

Knox and Kohl run off to build a snowman and I find myself cocooned in the comfort of his arms.

I look into his eyes and find so much adoration in them for me.

"Hi."

"Hey" I lean down towards him and our noses touch.

He lifts one of his hands and brushes my hair out my face, leaving his other hand placed firmly on my hip. He slides his fingers through my hair until his hand reaches the back of my head, then he tugs me the short distance to him and kisses me. My hands go to his chest feeling the strength of him through his coat. My surroundings blur away as I get lost in him as I get lost us. My lips part when I gasp and he takes the opportunity to slip his tongue inside my mouth. Our tongues tangle together and I let out a moan. His tongue retreats from my mouth and nips my bottom lip then pulls back completely.

His eyes are sparkling with desire and I'm sure mine reflect the same.

"As much as it pains me to stop, especially after that little moan you just let out, we're in the presence of our boys would hate to traumatic them from us kissing."

I bury my face in the space between his neck and shoulder to hide my blush from him. His body shakes as he soundlessly chuckles, I smack him in his side to get him to stop but that just makes him laugh harder. I roll my eyes and get up, he does the same and kisses my cheek before going over to the boys to help finish their snowman.
