Chapter Nineteen
I look at myself in the mirror and sigh. I'm wearing a red sweater dress with a black and red plaid infinity scarf and a pair of black ballet flats. My brown hair is in curls cascading down my back. For my make-up, I just went with some mascara and chapstick.
I put effort into how I look tonight but didn't go all out. I know Cage's mother is going to judge everything about me and the boys. So I'm really going to try and not let her judgment get to me.
It's not that I care what she thinks of me I know the only opinion that really matters is my own.
I just can only hope she doesn't voice her judgemental opinions about Knox and Kohl out loud. To others when Mrs. Trevor looks at the twins it seems like she is curious about them. When really I can tell she wishes that we lived in a town or city far away from Rushmore, somewhere that she wouldn't have to see them anytime she walks around town. I have just always been pretty good at reading people since I was kind of a wallflower in high school. I preferred it that way honestly and I just kept on myself and studied people.
Honestly, if I didn't have Molly and Nora in high school I never would have done anything more than go to school, come home and do my homework. I never would have gone to that fourth of July party.
I take one last look at my appearance in my bathroom mirror and then leave my room. I go out to the living room and spot the boys. Both wearing the red long-sleeved dress shirts, dark gray sweater vests, and slacks I picked out for them.
"I can't believe you're making us wear this Mom," Kohl says while glaring down at his shirt.
Knox doesn't look too happy about it either considering the look he's giving me.
"I know, I'm sorry. I just wanted you both to look nice is all."
"Could have looked nice in a t-shirt and jeans," Knox grumbles.
Just going off the boys' attitude I can tell that this night is going to go terrible. Knox normally doesn't give me any attitude, even when I tell him he has to do something he doesn't want to.
"Look I know you both don't want to go. Heck, I don't even want to but we're doing this for your Dad. Us meeting his parents will make him very happy okay? If you both behave and please try not to have such bad attitudes I'll take you to get milkshakes after deal?" I ask them hoping bribing the twins would help.
Knox and Kohl share a few looks, doing their twin telepathic thing.
They must have come to some kind of an agreement because they look ate and nod their head accepting the offer.
There's a knock on the door and I kiss Knox and Kohl on their foreheads in thanks. I walk over to the door and open it seeing Cage. He's dressed similarly to the twins but instead of a sweater vest, he has a suit jacket on.
He looks so handsome.
If having Cage dressed like that to look at all night doesn't get me through this dinner I don't what would. I mean I have to have something to get me through this dinner. Milkshakes may help the boys but it sure won't help me.
"Hey," I say to him.
"Hey, you look gorgeous."
"Thank you, you look great as well. The boys are not in the best mood right now so beware and I told them we could get milkshakes after dinner. That okay with you?" I turn around and lead him out of the mudroom and to the living room.
"Yeah that's fine I don't really know how long dinner will be. Just tell me if you want to leave though okay?" Cage grabs my hand and runs his thumb across the top.
I just nod my head.
"Hey Dad," Kohl says cheering up slightly in the presence of his father.
It seems that whenever the twins are upset from now on I just need to call their father and tell him to come over. I'm sure other Moms would be disappointed that they can't cheer up their kids themselves but I'm not. Not really anyway. I love that Knox and Kohl have their father in their lives now. I never should have not told Cage.
"Hey, boys you both ready to go?"
"Yeah I guess so," Knox answers him.
We all load up into Cage's truck and drive the short distance to his parent's house. I don't take the time to take in the house I'm too busy trying to stay calm. I really don't care what his parents think of me I just care about what Cage thinks of me. What if he agrees with his parent's opinions? Or what if they convince Cage to stop seeing me and get full custody of the twins? There are a million and one different scenarios going through my mind right now.
Cage must sense me panicking cause he grabs my hand and gives it a gentle squeeze.
"It's going to be fine remember we can leave whenever you want."
With that Cage gets out of the vehicle and comes around to my side to help me out as well. The boys jump out of the truck and follow behind us to the front door. Cage rings the doorbell and we wait calmly until someone opens the door.
Mrs. Trevor opens the door and Cage greets her with a friendly hug.
"Hey, Mom you look lovely." He says then he pulls back and gives her a kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you son come on in," she barely spares the twins and me a glance and opens the door wider for us all to enter.
She leads us down the hallway past a sitting room and a home office and into the dining room. In there is Cage's dad, sister, her husband, and their two kids Patrick and Sandra. They are already sitting down and must have been waiting for us to get here so they can start dinner.
"Cage," His Dad says and gives him a nod.
"Dad. Lauryn, how are you?" Cage kisses his sister on the cheek then pulls a chair out for me.
I touch his arm silently telling him thanks and take my seat. The boys sit on my right and Cage sits next to me on my left. Cage's parents are at the head of each side of the table and his sister, husband and kids are in front of us.
"Good how are you?" Lauryn answers Cage back not even bothering to acknowledge the boys and me.
Her not acknowledging us isn't surprising considering the recent fight Knox and Kohl got into with her son Patrick. I do not have a doubt in my mind that her parents have heard about it too.
More than once.
"Good. I'm sure you all know Rory but this is Knox and this is Kohl." Cage points at each of them so they know who is who.
If I wasn't around them every single day and only saw the boys like once a month or something, I would get them confused. They both look exactly alike. And there is no denying that the boys are Cage they look just like him when he was younger.
When nobody says anything Lauryn's husband Ethan speaks up, earning a glare from his wife in the process.
"Nice to see you again Rory and you to boys. The gingerbread cookies are delicious. I always send my secretary out in the morning to get some since they're always gone before noon."
"Yeah, I'm so glad I have Quinn I don't know how I would keep up with making those by myself." I shoot Ethan a small smile in thanks.
Ethan isn't anything like his wife at all. He's super kind to everyone doesn't care about how much money they have at all. I even saw him once stop to help an old lady fix her tire. It's not something you expect someone from the city to do. I know that sounds kind of cliche maybe? But it's just not something city people would do. Like one time the boys and I took a trip to the city and the car died. I ended up having to call a tow truck since nobody would stop just to give us a jump start. When if we were in our small town someone would stop to make sure everything is okay.
"Is dinner ready? I'm hungry." Sandra Lauryn's daughter says.
Just as she said that a lady comes into the dining room holding plates. Cage, Knox, Kohl and I thank her when she places a plate I'm front of us. She seems kind of shocked that we thanked her. I look at my plate and see salmon with long grain wild rice and grilled asparagus tops. I shoot the twins an I'm sorry look after seeing that we're having salmon for dinner.
The boys hate salmon. I tried cooking it in different ways to hopefully find a way they would like since fish is super healthy for you. Every time I failed at finding a way they would like so I stopped trying.
We're all quiet as we eat, the only sound in the dining room is the clank and scraping of silverware against plates.
Soon the silence is broken by Mrs. Trevor.
"So Aurora I heard you're seeing Cage now. Should we expect another grandchild?" Mrs. Trevor just calmly cuts off a piece of asparagus and eats it after speaking.
