Chapter 5

"What would you like for lunch?" I asked Brooke while pulling a stack of menus out of a drawer on the cabinet behind me. We didn't have a cafeteria in the building, so if you didn't bring your lunch, you were ordering out. Since I had over a dozen take out menus from local eateries in that drawer, you could guess what I did most days.

"Oh! Umm... My dad is taking me to lunch. Kind of a little celebration for my first day."

I nodded quickly. I guess I should have expected that. It was her first day, and if I was her dad, I'd do the same thing. But her family was known for long lunches. Very long lunches. I just hoped it didn't become a habit. But there would probably be a bunch of lunches with her father as long as she was working here. They were family after all. "That's fine. Enjoy your meal."

"I'll make sure to minimize that, okay?" She seemed contrite, but I guess we'd have to see how it goes moving forward.

"It's your dad, it isn't like you can say no. He's the boss, right?"

"Yeah." She sounded dejected, and I could tell she realized she was in a catch 22. It was her first day, so there were going to be some growing pains.

"Brooke." I waved a little to get her attention. "I'm not going to throw you into the fire right away, okay? Don't get all worried. We're going to get this done. You do what you need to do, and I'll be here when you get back."

She gave me back a nervous smile and a small nod. "I will. I'll be fast."

"That's fine. Now, do you have access to the corporate shared drive, or do we need to get IT on the phone?" I asked.

She looked back down at the computer, and then started clicking. "Is that the H drive?"

"Right, that's where they normally map it. Look in there for the folder with the Splashing Dolphin Resort. When you go there, there will be an archive folder with all our old work, and another folder for the current proposal. Look over the current proposal and start reviewing it. Look at the old ones if you want to compare it there and see how it stacks up. If you're not done before you have to go to lunch, then you can keep working on it later. We need to get that done and approved before the end of the week to keep them happy."

She was busy reading, and taking a few notes as she did, when Jax and Bryan came in, without knocking of course. "Brooke, time for lunch," Bryan stated.

"Okay, just a sec, I'm almost done," she murmured, her eyes never leaving the screen.

"Come on, that's not important," Jax scoffed. "I'm hungry!"

"You didn't get your fill earlier?" I asked with a smirk. "And please knock the next time you come in here."

"Fuck you, you didn't knock when you came into the copy room!" he snarked back.

"That's a common area, there should be no reason to knock. We weren't expecting it to be used as a fuck boy room. This is being used as an office and should be treated as such. Unless we don't need to knock to go into yours too."

"Art Directors don't get offices," Bryan pointed out.

I looked him dead in the eye with a smirk. "You're right. But there are a lot of things that I do that Art Directors shouldn't. Or would you prefer to just have me stick to my job description and drop everything else?"

He curled his lip at me but didn't respond. Jax opened his mouth to offer a retort but at that moment Brooke stood up.

"Okay, I'm done. Why are you here though, I thought I was going with dad?" she asked her brother.

"He said it was a family lunch," Jax answered with a cocky grin.

"You two boys finally making it official?" I asked drily.

"Ha! I'll be family soon enough." He held out his hand for Brooke, who slapped it away.

"Not unless Kris is right and you're marrying Bryan. And keep that hand away from me. After seeing you in the copy room, I'm not getting anywhere near it." She backed away from him with her hands up.

"Stop with the bickering, let's just get some lunch," pleaded Bryan. "I'm sick of this place."

Yeah, that usually happened about fifteen minutes after he got here. Brooke gave me one small wave as she left, and I didn't know if I was jealous that she'd be eating a lot better than I was or pity her for the company. No, never mind, pity was the only real choice with those guys. Leafing through the menus, I found one of my favorite sandwich shops nearby and ordered a chicken parmesan sub. Those were always yummy.

After a quick lunch, I spent the next few hours looking through the TFDL website looking for local events and realized a few things. First, their website needed a total redesign. Second, they really were the perfect choice for this. And third, they probably needed this partnership, or one with another big sponsor, to survive. If they didn't get a good deal, they might not last another year.

The first part I could help with though. Their headquarters were in Chicago, and I decided to make a quick phone call. If I was lucky, I would get a hold of Monica Chambers, the league's sole owner according to their website contact information.

"Hello?" came a tired woman's voice from the other end of the line.

"Hi there, my name is Kris van Noorel. I was hoping to speak to Monica Chambers."

"You got her. I don't recall your name though. What is this in reference to?" she asked. I could tell she was confused, and they must be running on a tight budget if she was answering her own phones.

"Monica, I'm going to come straight to the point. I work for Nimbleworth Advertising in San Francisco, and I'd like to help out the TDFL. Some of what I have to say I'd like to do in person, but some I can say now. Do you have a few minutes?"

Her voice instantly became more alive as she started to get a little hope. "Kris, right? If you want to help us out, then I'm all ears. What can I do for you?"

"Well, I have a potential client, and they're looking to do a corporate sponsorship. I don't have them as a client yet, but I'd like to pitch you as the league they should sponsor, and I think it would work for both parties. You need a sponsor, and they could get some rabid fans," I explained.

I heard her sigh on the other end of the line. "That's very nice Kris, it is. But do you really think you can sell our brand to a company? Have you seen one of our matches?"

"I have. I saw one in London about seven years ago. One of the best nights of my life. It was like a sexy wrestling match, and I want to see that go big. But to do that, we need to make you look like you're not ready to go under." It had been a spur of the moment thing on a Saturday night. I went with a couple of girls with the office and had a blast. And yeah, I wanted to be kissed like that some time.

"You saw one in London? Yeah, those Euro babes can pucker up." She chuckled afterwards as though remembering something. I wasn't going to ask what, but I was betting it was personal.

"Do you think I could come to Chicago and meet you this weekend? I'd like to talk you through it in person, and then you can tell me if this is something you're interested in."

"Damn, you move fast!" I heard her take a deep breath. "I can make time this weekend. We have a big card on Saturday night, the US champ will be crowned. Maybe we can discuss things beforehand?"

"Perfect! I can do that. I'll arrive Saturday morning and we'll get things moving."

"Kris, you know we can't pay for any of this, right?" I could tell she was already worried about meeting me.

"You don't need to worry about that Monica. I have some ideas that will help boost your league enough to sell them on your viability. If I can do that, and then craft a winning campaign, I think everyone can win. I really think that you have a great product, we just have to get it out there for people to see."

"I hope this works then! Our wrestlers would love to see the sport blow up!"

"Is this number your cell?" I asked, just to make sure.

"It is. I assume you called from yours as well?"

"Yes. Then I guess we have everything we need. I'll text you with my flight information later, but I plan on seeing you on Saturday for the matches and walking through my plan."

I hung up the phone and checked the time. It was getting pretty late, and there was still no sign of Brooke. That wasn't a good omen for the future. Knowing the guys, they'd call it a business meeting lunch and spend the afternoon downing martinis. I had hoped that Brooke wouldn't be involved in that, though it was a celebration of sorts for her, so I'd give her the benefit of the doubt. This time.

I created a little virtual server on my laptop and started working on my version of the new TDFL website. Their current site was abysmal, and obviously had been done with either no budget or by someone in house who only had rudimentary skills. I could fix that. They had no recent photos, only a few profiles of their wrestlers, and the events page was three months out of date. No results were posted, and the graphics were amateurish at best. If I could get some photos from their local affiliates, then we could make a much better site than they had now.

I had a lot of work to do, but I had planned on spending the night anyway. The way things were going, I'd be doing that every night for the whole week!
