Chapter 4
Nimbleworth Advertising's San Francisco office wasn't huge. They only had two floors leased within the large tower that was located downtown, a small setup compared to many companies that owned entire buildings. One of those floors, the 15th, was exclusively for the Creative teams, and the 14th was for a combination of Accounting, Legal, HR, and IT. Unfortunately, that was also where the office supplies and copy room were too, because those departments used them more than we did up in Creative.
"Did anyone give you a tour of the office yet?" I asked Brooke as we set off for the copy room, papers in hand.
"Not really. They showed me where you were, and where their offices were. Oh, and the conference rooms."
"They didn't even show you where the break room is? I guess that isn't a surprise. I'm not sure if they know where anything is, they just send people to fetch things for them." It wouldn't shock me at all if Jax and Bryan had no idea where anything was except for their offices and the secluded places to take a willing coworker for some alone time.
"Nope, nothing!"
The break room wasn't anything special, just a couple of refrigerators for lunches, some assorted microwaves, coffee makers and vending machines. There was also a sink for washing up, and some cabinets for storing things like napkins, coffee grounds, filters, and paper plates. There were also four small tables for people who didn't want to eat in their office, though most of us were too busy to do anything but eat at our desks while the work continued.
Beyond that, the most important people to meet were the other creative teams reporting to Jax, and she'd already met them briefly in the little team meeting where she was introduced. Elliot and Sergio were the best of the other teams, then Jonah and Chelsea made up one of the others, and Harriet and Neil were the last. They were all heads down busy, no doubt working like we were on the Nike pitch, but I did show her where they all sat, so that she could go track them down if she ever needed to.
She'd need their guidance once I was gone.
With that taken care of, we went downstairs to see where the different departments were located. I showed her IT Legal, HR, and then Accounting. I wanted to introduce her to Carley in accounting, but she wasn't there. She handled all the accounts that ran through Bryan's team, so I worked with her a lot since Bryan had no idea what he needed to do in that regard. She was a good person, and one of the few people I really liked in the office along with Elliot and Sergio.
"They have a break room here too, just like ours, and the all important copy room," I explained as we walked down the hall. "This is also the supply room." I pushed the door open to a small room ranged with giant cabinets full of office supplies. "Grab thumb tacks and sticky notes please. They're in the last cabinet, top drawer." I hunted until I found several packs of multicolored index cards, a couple of small notepads, and a bunch of multicolored pens. All of that was for Brooke, mine were already upstairs, but she'd need her own.
Once we had all we needed, I took her back out for the rest of the tour. "Do you think you got a good handle on things?"
"Yeah. It isn't too big, so I think I can find where everything is." She seemed pretty confident about that, so I felt a little better. Of course, that all faded when I opened the door to the copy room and found Carley topless and bent over the copier, her skirt bunched up at her waist while Jax was pumping himself into her. They didn't seem to notice us until Brooke let out a startled gasp.
They both turned to look at us, stuck in mid thrust while unsure what to do. I just handed the papers over to Carley with a sigh. "Can you make one copy of each of these and bring it up when you're done, and the copier is cleaned?"
I turned around and led Brooke out of the room, and over to the ladies' room. I needed to wash up after that! "Are you okay?"
"Yeah. That was just way more of Jax than I ever wanted to see. Well, less, I guess. That seemed pretty small for someone who gets around in the office." She gave a shudder, and I was worried she might be sick.
"You'll get used to it." I'd seen him doing that at least seven different times now, and it was disgusting every time.
"I don't want to get used to that!" she yelped. "Once was way more than enough! That was way too... too... squelchy!"
"Yep, and that is why we're gay!" I agreed.
She looked over at me in shock. "You are?"
"I guess I didn't make it obvious enough. I thought the going to Bora Bora with cheerleaders comment would get that across. Sorry, Yep, quite gay last time I checked. I haven't looked in a while, but I'm pretty sure I'm still gay." I made a point of looking down inside my blouse for a moment. "Yep. Still gay. Want me to check out your ass to convince you?"
"No, no, I get it!" she said with a giggle. "I wasn't sure how many people would be out here in the office."
"Me, you, Sergio, and there is a girl named Shay over in legal. Oh, and Sofia, she's our outside legal advisor when we need her. I think that's about it. Oh, but steer clear of Sofia, she's quite the player. Unless you like that kind of thing." I checked the five of us off on my fingers as I listed them and couldn't help but notice the way she looked at my fingers. Was she imagining them elsewhere? That was an interesting thought, but it was better not to mix business and pleasure. Brooke was the boss' daughter, and there was an excellent chance I was leaving soon, so it was pointless to get involved. "There may be more, but we're the ones that are out."
"Sounds like a nice little group." Brooke stated. "Should we head back to our office, or are we waiting on Carley to be done?"
"Oh no, we should head back. I don't want to be anywhere near Jax after that. Every other time I've interrupted him, he's been in a foul mood for the rest of the day." Jax in a foul mood was even more of a little bitch than him in a good mood. I didn't need any of that, though it might be good to let Brooke see him in that state so she would be prepared for the future. Or would he just behave around her? She might be good protection against his attitude!
"So, we need those forms for the Nike pitch?" she wondered as we headed back upstairs.
"We do, but we can talk about other things in the meantime. That isn't all we have to do, trust me. Do you have any questions so far?"
"I do, actually. What happened to your last copywriter? Did they leave? Get a promotion?" She wondered as we settled back into our seats.
"I haven't had a copywriter since I joined this branch. I had two in the UK. One was a nice woman named Carol, but she ended up getting a promotion to an account manager. Then I worked on a few projects with a guy named Nick over there, but none here. But to answer your question, as far as I know Carol is still working in the UK office, as is Nick." I didn't really need one to do my job here, though there were times it would have been easier to have one when I was covering for Jax and Bryan. But if they gave me one, at least one that wasn't a relative, then that person would know the truth about their job performance. It was an open secret anyway among the team, but the full extent wasn't clear.
She was silent for a moment as she thought about what that might mean. "Do you think they gave me the job as your copywriter to lighten your load?"
"I plan to use you to do just that. You can help me with a resort client that needs a new web campaign. You're more than welcome to look over what I have so far and add to it. That will help me knock out other things so we can concentrate on Nike." I was a fool for not thinking about this to begin with. I might be bitter about her impending promotion, but in the short term she could be valuable. "After the resort, there is an LL Bean piece you could help with too."
"You didn't answer my question."
"You're right. We'll come back to that later. I'll let you form your own conclusions."
"That sounds ominous!" her eyebrows were raised in surprise.
I nodded quickly. "You're right. You don't want me to say anything bad about your friends and family, and I can understand that. It's your first day here, and that is probably the wrong way to give you a good impression of the company. It really is a good one, we get a lot done and our clients are happy. The rest I'll let you discover on your own."
She cocked her head a little, as though thinking about that statement. "That seems fair. But at the end of a week, I'm going to want more information."
"I can agree to that."
"Don't any of these girls go to HR about Jax and Bryan?" Brooke asked after a few more minutes.
"A few years ago, someone did. Turns out the HR supervisor used to be Jax's college roommate. The girl who complained doesn't work here anymore. They're all scum." I felt bad, making it sound like everything sucked here. Really, if you looked at the people working on our team, it was really good. It was just the management was all made up of lazy swine.
She just shook her head, a frown on her face.
