Chapter 33
I showed up to Carol's hotel room as the bearer of two pizza pies. I knew from past experience that Brooke likes pepperoni, and Carol likes cheese, so I had one of each since I liked both. They'd been quiet since Brooke had headed back to the office, and I was hopeful that it was good news, and they were waiting to surprise me with it.
When Brooke answered the door with a big smile on her face, I knew I was right, and I breathed out a sigh of relief that I didn't even know I was holding. "It went well?" I asked.
"Yes!" she nodded quickly. "Now put the pizza down so I can hug you!"
I did, placing the pizza boxes on the tv stand and pulling Brooke into my arms. "Is that better?"
"Yes! Perfect. Sophia served Jax with annulment papers, he already said he wouldn't fight it. Sophia says she can get us into a judge on Monday. With no arguing, it is pretty much a signature and we're done, once it's filed with the court," Brooke explained as she rested her head on my shoulder.
That was just what I needed to hear. "And then you're mine again?"
"I was always yours," she whispered.
"Okay, no more!" Carol called from her bed, where she was reclining. "Some of us are married to people on another continent, and don't need to see all this lovey dovey crap!"
"I'm sorry Carol, I just needed to hear what happened. I don't think I can thank you enough for taking care of those assholes."
"That was my pleasure. They have no business working at Nimbleworth, or at least at their previous position, so we'll see if they can survive. I doubt they will, but I've been surprised before."
"What are the next steps?" I wondered. "Where do we go from here?"
"Wherever you go, I go," Brooke quickly started. "As soon as I closed on your condo, I called my agent and relisted it. It might not sell as quickly as we like, but I'm going with you."
"You don't even know what my plans are," I pointed out, pulling her in tighter. "Are you sure about this?"
"Absolutely. I'm still your girlfriend, right?"
"But I was planning on leaving the city, that's why I sold my place. I'm planning on going to Chicago. Do you really want to do that with me? Isn't that fast?"
"I married my husband after knowing him for two weeks," chimed in Carol. "Maybe you just get a big place in Chicago and stay in separate rooms until you figure things out. But you shouldn't give your relationship up. What do either of you have here in the city to keep you?"
I looked over at Brooke, and she was grinning, her eyes bright with excitement. "Do you want to go with me? Really?"
"Yes!" she said happily. "We can do this, I know it!"
Damn, she looked so happy that it was contagious. "Then I guess we're moving to Chicago together." This would be a pretty amazing adventure together! "Carol, did you think about the Chicago office, or should we start our own?"
She stood up and walked over to us, grabbing a couple pieces of the pizza just to make us wait. "I was thinking that the Nimbleworth Advertising family could use another North America office. New York is too expensive for leasing space, but Chicago is well situated to capitalize on the potential clients across the Midwest. The office will start small, just two people, I think. There will be some support staff, but we can run most of that from here if need be. Do you think you can find an office?"
I had tears in my eyes by the time she was done. That was exactly what we needed. "I can't believe you're doing that."
She just shrugged with a smile. "You just landed the biggest client this office has ever had. Hell, Nike is bigger than any client the UK office ever landed too! Nike would flip out if you left the company right after they signed the contract, so I'm being nothing but selfish."
"You should be selfish more often!" Brooke told her. "The branch is going to be a lot better with you running it."
"Thank you, that means a lot. Now, I do have one more thing I can do for you." Carol took a bite of the pizza and sighed. "This is so much better than back home!"
"What else can you do?" I wondered impatiently.
"I'm moving here and bringing over the family. I could take that condo back off your hands so you can leave as soon as your paperwork is done with Jax."
Brooke and I just stared at her. "You're serious?" I couldn't believe it.
"Yep. I went and looked at it with Brooke, and I really liked it. I can give you a fair price and then you're on your way."
I didn't trust myself to speak after that, and Brooke just walked over to her and took her into a careful hug so as to not knock over the pizza. Following her cue, I did the same thing, and we just hung onto Carol for a bit. I don't think I could repay her kindness, but I'd try.
We finally got back to the pizza, since we didn't want it getting cold, and it helped with the nerves. I'd skipped lunch after the title office, and I was craving food. The pizza hit the spot, and it gave me a little more energy.
"You know, I still don't have your new number," I said to Brooke. "I heard you got a new phone, but I didn't get the number."
"Well get your number in here!" she passed me her phone and I quickly entered my contact info before texting myself. It was a barren phone considering the only other people on there were Carol and Sophia. We'd fill that up soon enough, as she'd play a big part in the team too. We were going to have a lot of work, and a lot of fun, getting everything set up.
"Carol, do you mind if I steal your roommate for the weekend? I've missed her." It was a meaningless question, because I had a feeling that Brooke had planned on spending it with me anyway.
"I had hoped you would! I don't want to hear you two!" Carol snickered. "I know very well what you're planning on doing!"
"Then we better let you have some peace and quiet." I stood up and held my hand out to Brooke. "Can I interest you in a weekend at my hotel?"
She took my hand in her, quickly linking our fingers. "Absolutely." We took a few minutes to pack her stuff up, so that Carol could have her room to herself for a change, and then we were off, with Carol getting many more goodbye hugs again for her amazing help.
The entire drive over to my hotel, our hands stayed linked, and I could feel her thumb rubbing gently over the back of my hand. "Do you have to do anything before we move? Do you have all your clothes?"
"Everything I need I have. There are a few things at my dad's, but nothing important. If the judge signed off on the annulment today, then we could leave right now. I'm ready to go."
"The Chicago girls are going to love you. All those TDFL girls will flirt shamelessly," I told her. I wasn't sure how much she'd blush around Tammy and Hilda!
"They're not the ones I want to love me," she said in a soft whisper.
That sent a surge of excitement through my body as I realized the implications. Was she thinking the same thing I was? "I don't think you're going to have to worry about that. I wouldn't want you to come with me if I wasn't sure that I cared a lot about you. An awful lot. I've never felt like this for someone else, and I don't want it to stop."
"I feel that too. I could tell when I saw you at the title office this morning. I wouldn't risk moving with you if I didn't feel just as confident."
"This is going to be an adventure. New city, new challenge, new relationship," I promised.
"New positions!" she added.
We both laughed at that one, though I could feel myself getting more aroused by the minute as the hotel came into view. "What positions would you like to try then?"
"Everything! There is nothing I don't want to do with you."
"Everything it is then!"
