Chapter 41

As the day progresses, with the cloud glooming, hinting at possible rain. Even though I would love to sit at home, overlooking the peaceful weather, I have to put that off because where I'm at currently.

Sitting at the head of the oval table, with many of the board members, and other important people here, there is another official meeting, an emergency one at that.

It's probably been almost a week since the last meeting and now we're here to overlook the process of the investigation, and to see where we are with everything else, including the development.

And of course, we still haven't found who or what damaged the files, even though Logan came forward with his suspension, it still wasn't enough–There wasn't any evidence and ever since then, he hasn't said anything else.

As everyone is discussing ways to find out what's happening and how we can fix the problem before the launch, some are suggesting that this could be the work of an organization and there might be multiple people working together against us.

Someone has also suggested that we might have to reschedule the launch date, since the date is close and we still have no idea who is behind all of this.

But to that, I refuse, we have been working on the next set of innovative products that if we reschedule this launch, it could damage many things altogether. The business and marketing strategy would have to change, making sure it's aligned with the date.

And the biggest change would be the customer loyalty and how they would respond to the change, to put it in simple terms, if we change, then we have to be prepared for many other things to change.

We simply can't do that. As I said no to that suggestion, I then suggest that we hire more top firm investigators to look into this, because if this is a direct target, then we need to bring more people that can help.

Continuing discussing, I couldn't take my mind off of one thing, or person, and that is Chopard.

Chopard is in the meeting room as well, standing where he usually stands, off to the side, behind me, with the ipad in his hands as he's taking notes.

As someone was talking and everyone was paying attention to them, I slowly turned in my chair as I turned my head, facing Liam, as I wanted to be direct about it, only to Chopard.

But, surprisingly, but not much of a surprise at the same time, he doesn't turn my way to look at me, not even a glance. Instead he looks ahead as he pays attention to the person talking as he continues taking notes.

It's been no surprise to find that Chopard is still mad at me for what happened between us in my office. I have to admit, after the talk with Akako and Daphne, I was feeling even more bad than ever before.

Even after my friends left, leaving me alone with my thoughts, I couldn't stop thinking about it, thinking about how disheartening it must've been for Liam.

He has been nothing but nice, but my pride and ego got the better of me. I wanted desperately to see the bad, to see that my suspicion was right about him, and what did I get in the end? This.

I mean, even before the meeting, Liam didn't even speak a word to me when we were waiting for the meeting to start, not even a peek out of his mouth.

And now thinking about it, he didn't say anything to anyone, just kept to himself, which is unlike him at all, compared to the outgoing and friendly person that he usually is.

Instead he just took his position, waiting for the meeting to start.

I did hope for him to look at me for a tiny glance, I was waiting for that, but instead, he avoided me altogether, my gaze and presence, as he didn't step a foot near me.

And to say that I needed it, was an understatement, in fact–I deserved it.

As I turned back in my chair, someone at the table was mentioning the deadline of the launch, and as they were explaining the complications that come with that, we were interrupted.

A loud commotion outside the meeting room we're in. The door muffled the sound, but it was no use, we could still hear the commotion.

Everyone immediately stops and looks towards the loud noise, as we hear someone yelling and shouting as loud as they could. The hallways leading to the meeting rooms echoing the noise.

I stared at the door in confusion and curiously as I tried to guess what's going on out there.

All of a sudden, the door flies open as someone barges in, while in the middle of a screaming match. And I can immediately recognize her, my ex-assistant. And from the few seconds this whole thing started, I'm guessing she is mad, pissed even.

She yelled, "Where is she?! Where is that bitch?!" She frantically looked around as she eyes everyone in the room, making out their faces.

As soon as she barged in, everyone reacted differently to the situation, some panicked as they looked around the room, as if trying to think of something to de-escalate the situation as soon as possible, and some remain calm, me included, as this is the last thing I want to deal with.

And to be honest, this is the most interesting thing that happened all week, beside me getting sick.

But nonetheless, everyone stands up as everyone in the room is scrambling, whether that be people accidentally pushing other people to try and get out of the way from the women walking towards me, or people trying to stop her.

Either way, the ex-assistant continues to stalk towards me as she keeps yelling, "You are nothing! You hear me–Nothing!", continuing, "Your ego and pride will destroy everyone and everything in your path! And soon you'll be the one standing in the rain all alone!"

As she finished that last statement, that made me smile, not on purpose, no, truly an accident–Just remembering the day I fired her and her just standing out in the rain all alone. It was funny, I have to admit.

Probably not the best time to be thinking how funny that moment is right now, considering now, this woman is unhinged and most likely going to try and hurt me.

As she took another step forward, that forced me to subconsciously take a step back as I didn't want her to get anywhere near her.

This prompts her to do more as she is full on charges at me, passing through people as she practically runs, but saved by the bell, a guy, someone on the board catches her as he tries his best to hold her back.

She fights and squirms in his arms, but it wasn't enough, the guy is too strong for her, and with that, she goes crazy as she realizes this is far as she can go, so she kicks and thrust her head around, trying to get the guy to let go of her.

After only a few seconds of this, she settles down, but not before long, she's yelling at me again, but I don't move, as I stand tall, crossing my arms, and planting my feet.

Her anger is shown even more as she expresses, "This is all your fault, if only you hadn't had your stupid standards and your rules! Then none of this would even happen! I was the perfect candidate for the job, and you couldn't see that!" She turns to everyone else as she screams, "None of you could!"

She then turns her head to Ruby, as she stopped struggling to break away from the guy's grip, finding it useless, she say, "You know me, I was the best assistant here, I got everything done, and I did a good damn job" She continued after taking a short breath, "Everybody knew!" she says as she screams, facing the ceiling.

"I have to go through the suffering at the hands of her!" She yells as she radically turns her gaze towards me, catching the guy that is holding her off guard as he almost lost his grip on her, but thankfully, he regains it.

She continues on with her tantrum, "All of that work and it still wasn't enough for you, you wanted a damn robot, instead you got a human, and it still wasn't enough for you. I got many offers from other companies, wanting me to work for them, but I turned them all down because of you. You fucking bitch, you made me do this–"

I cringed as I thought how sad this is, clearly she wants to take her anger out on someone, and that unfortunate someone is me.

It's clear that she needs to work out her problems, but I don't think barging into a building you used to work at isn't going to help. In fact, I think she could go to jail for this, or if she's eligible, a mental hospital.

She clearly needs to talk to someone about these problems, and it's not going to be me. I owe her nothing, the only thing she's going to get out of me is a charge, if I feel like it, which from the look of it, she's going to get it.

As she noticed that I might not be paying attention, she thrust her head towards another direction, this time it's behind me, and the only person behind me is Chopard. I don't take my eyes off her, because of the situation right now, and if she could get loose and attack me.

Her attention is only on Chopard and from the facial expression she's making right now, it seems like she's questioning who he is, then coming to the realization.

This realization makes her laugh, like an evil villain, she settles down as she talks to Liam, as she warns him, "I guess this is the new assistant, huh? How Hailey, you're really quick to replace a bitch" She giggles, "Don't worry, whatever your name is, you'll end up just like me, toss away like trash"

She turns her attention towards me again, "Did you tell him that? That he'll only have limited time before you see the flaws in him?!" She questions, slightly struggling to move forwards towards me.

I didn't say anything as I didn't want to further the situation, so I remain quiet as I trust someone is coming to handle this unhinged woman. And plus, even if I do have anything to say, I doubt it would make her feel better about everything she's thinking about.

Because it seems right now, that her vision of me in her head is good enough for the truth. Not acknowledging that she screwed herself over by making those mistakes and making me clean up after her.

When she said that she will devote her life to me, I didn't think this is what she meant. Remembering the time that I fired her, I don't think she knew what she was saying, I think she would say anything to try and keep her job.

As she's still staring at me, wanting me to talk, this distracts her as the guy that is holding her wraps one arm around her arms, behind her back, making her unable to move them, as he takes out a phone as he frantically calls for security, wanting them to rush over here.

I breathe out in relief in silence, as I was wondering where security was all this time.

Thank god she didn't notice it, as she continued to argue with herself, "I deserve better, I did the work and good work means good outcome! I was the best employee around Hailey, one that you will ever get!"

She waited, supposably for an answer from me, but I won't give her the satisfaction of one, she doesn't deserve that.

After only a few seconds of waiting, she became more angry as she didn't get what she wanted. I don't know what exactly she wants me to say, but I can promise her that she's not getting it.

Outraged by my lack of sentences, she says, "Why won't you say something! Say something dammit! Oh wait–I know, you think you're better than me, huh, is that what it is! Say something!"

And saved by the bell, as soon as she finished that sentence, security came in, rushing through the room, everyone was relieved as this thing is finally over, I as well.

They quickly spot the woman as they quickly grab her, the guy that was holding her for the longest time moved out of the way, letting the guards handle it from here.

The ex-assistant screamed and tried to run out of their arms, but it was no use because they were just too strong, they practically had to drag her out of the room because she refused to walk  out peacefully.

As she's being dragged out, she continues screaming and swearing, continuing through the halls of the meeting rooms, she gets progressively quieter as I assume she is getting placed outside, waiting for the police to take her into custody.

Looking into the hall, leading to the lobby, I can see many of the workers out there are confused as they watch the whole thing go down, curiously looking between the meeting room and outside of the building.

A minute went by as everyone in the meeting room was assuring each other, checking up with each other, as they discussed the events that just took place.

Ruby came over as she gained my attention by putting a hand on my shoulder, asking, "Are you okay, Hailey–Ms. Cantrell" with a concerned look on her face.

I nodded as I confirmed, "I'm fine Ruby, thanks" I said as I tapped her hand as a way to say thanks as her hands left my shoulder, going to check up on everyone else.

As I looked around the room, as I saw everyone was a little shaken up by what happened, the only thing I can think about is that this situation cannot affect the company or us in any way.

This wasn't even a setback, this was just a show for her, she only wants attention and is still bitter about what happened, so she wants to sabotage something in order to feel better about herself. It's sad.

But the show has to go on, this can't be a distraction to us, no matter how dramatic the situation is.

But remember what she said to Chopard, I turned back to face him, as I didn't want him to get intimidated by things like this, even though he is still mad at me, I assume. I just want to make sure he doesn't take whatever she said to heart or constantly think about it after this meeting wraps up.

As I study him, Liam–Chopard is still standing in the same place then he was before, like he was on the sidelines to whatever was happening, but this time, the ipad hangs low in his hand, and his face is saying everything, that he's confused and wants to know what is going on.

Staring at him more than ever, that confusion of his is starting to worry me. I worry that he's going to believe everything that she says, even though in her situation it was true, but I just hope he doesn't think of himself that way.

That he's just trash, ready to be tossed out while a new thing replaces him.

As Liam suddenly locked eyes with me, he was surprised, but then that surprise immediately faded as he looked away, quickly. He still didn't say anything to me or anyone else in the room.

I continued to watch him as he breathed out, as he started to move towards me. For a second, I thought he wanted to speak to me, but no, he walked right past me, not sparing me a glance.

He did the same for everyone else, this time, saying excuse me, squeezing by everyone. He left the meeting room, my eyes followed him. In my mind, I begged him to turn around and looked back, even for one second.

I don't know why I wanted that, but in the end, I didn't get it. He left the hallway as he moved past everyone else, the figure disappearing in the mist of the rest of the employees lingering.

As my eyes watched the direction he went, I didn't notice Ruby was right next to me, but the moment I looked down at the floor, I felt her eyes on me.

I looked at her, as she suggested, "Maybe, we should take a five minute break, before we continue on with this meeting, I think some of us need the break"

Nodding, I agreed with that, as I secretly wanted a break from all of this as well, I sigh as I sat back down in my seat, thinking hard.

First Chopard and now this woman. When is Hailey going to catch a break?
