Chapter 38

A few days later, I had fully recovered from my sickness. I do have to give credit to Liam for the most part, because every day after work, he would come by and check up on me–To see if I'm doing well and making sure I'm taking time for myself, instead of working.

Even though the desire to work was growing as I was sick for many days, I knew that listening to Liam would be the best idea, which was not working myself to death, as said by him.

But even though I'm a functioning adult, I do appreciate him for doing that for me. He didn't have to but he did, I guess it's the love this caring person he has in him.

And now that I'm fully recovered and well, I'm back in the office so I can restart this investigation about the files. But this time, it's even better now, with the sickness out of the way–my brain is more focused and sharper than ever.

Currently, I'm sitting in my office as a meeting is taking place, with an investigator and with the head of tech. As we're trying to discuss who is responsible for this, and how bad the damage is.

As we are discussing, they are informing me that they might have a lead.

The head of tech speaks, suggesting, "How about instead of someone outside the company doing this, it might be someone from the inside, working here"

I turn my head towards him as I warn him, "Careful there Logan, accusing an employee within the company with tampering with important files is a serious thing" I continued after a brief pause, so that he takes in my warning, "It could be considered a case of termination or a crime"

Standing up from my chair, I lean on my desk, hands resting on top, "So I would advise you to think before speaking"

But he doesn't coward to my waning, only standing up straighter as he tries to make himself more confident.

The investigator in the room is obviously taken aback by Logan's suggestion, as he adjusted his glasses and tries to quietly look for notes or documents in the folder in his hand. As he looks curiously at him, to see what he has to say.

It's quite obvious that even he doesn't know what Logan is talking about, which means that he took it upon himself to speak out for this investigation.

Crossing my arms, I signaled him to start speaking. Waiting to hear what he has to say.

Rolling his shoulders back, he stands firm and calm as he starts, "I'm strong about this, Ms. Cantrell, the dots don't connect and no one from outside the company can barely manage to do this. It has to be someone that knows the ins and outs here, someone who is close by you and can access the files"

He takes a breath as he rants on, "It has to be someone that knows their way around here, someone that would be the last person anyone would think would do it"

My arms tighten, just like my patience, as if I have all the time in the world to be listening to him ramble on and on about this, it's not like we have a deadline to figure this out before the launch day.

I shrug my shoulders, as if saying 'what was all that about?'.

Logan seems to take notice of this as he adjusted his tie, loosening it as he now appears visually nervous to speak now. Like one minute, he's firm and confident about what he's saying and the next he can't even stand up straight.

He then swallows nervously as he blurted out a name, a name I'm familiar with, "I have reasons to think it's Liam Chopard, ma'am"

On the outside, I show no emotion, just a stone face that is waiting for an explanation, but on the inside, it's a completely different story. On the inside, I'm the most surprised I have ever been in a while, shocked even–At this idea that Chopard would get blamed for something as serious as this.

As I kept my surprised emotion hidden, I demanded, "Logan, explain further, otherwise I would assume that you're making up a rumor" Trying to downplay his suspicion.

But in the back of my mind, I prayed that this wasn't true, that Chopard wouldn't go behind my back and do something that could hurt me and my company, including the person working here for his own personal gain.

Please, don't let it be true, I thought.

But much to my surprise, Logan pulls out the company ipad as he looks for something, smiling sneakily as if he cracked a code to something.

And from the look of it, he seems like he did.

Me and the investigator looked at each other as we were both curious about the evidence he gathered.

"I have been keeping track of the files for a while now, and this morning, I was able to create a timeline of events once they started acting funny, the events line up with Chopard too much. This is not a coincidence"

He starts from his long lists of reasons, "So whenever the files started to show weird signs of outside involvement, it was around the same time Chopard was hired"

For this reason, I shrugged my shoulders but I continued listening.

"I noticed whenever Chopard first started working here–That he was incredibly nice to many of the workers here, including myself. He would even go as far out of his way to be nice to the people he was unfamiliar with–"

Now, at that, I opened my mouth to speak, as I wanted to point out that people have different personalities, much to Logan's knowledge and this is not evidence at all to this case. But it is evidence that Logan is too busy stalking people around the office instead of working.

But before I could speak, Logan beat me to it, as if he already knew what I was about to say.

"Now, I know this is strange to point out, but it is a common fact that–In the corporate world, employees are usually enemies with each other, trying to gain the most, trying to top everyone else, so maybe Liam was trying to gain everyone's trust by doing so, to try to make everyone around him not worry about Liam being an enemy "

"That may be true Logan, but at the end of the day, you don't know the intention behind Liam's openness with others, maybe he is trying to be friendly with other people" I said, secretly trying to argue with him.

"No, unfortunately we don't know, but I did do a background check on him, and his history gave me reasons. Apparently, his father has a business and while doing so, he was selling illegal goods" He smiled as he wants to makes his points clear, "Clearly Liam must have learned a few things from him"

I opened my mouth to warn him about insulting Liam, but once again, he beat me to it.

"And the last reasoning of my investigation is that he's not up to the standard you have for all employees here"

I stared in shock as he pointed the finger at me, how dare he–Telling me about the performance of other workers when he should be focusing on his own damn work.

As I remain calm, I say, "Logan, Chopard is being just fine, and nothing is wrong with his performance, I don't know who you think you are, but if I were you, I would watch what you say, carefully"

"Just fine" He repeated as he scoffs, "Chopard have been making mistakes, even few that you would normally fire someone for, you did that with the last assistant"

He crossed his arms, as the ipad is tucked under his arm, "Either you're so busy with your work that you don't even see it, or you're allowing him to do this, which it making it unfair to the rest of the workers"

Logan huffs out a breath as he continued, clearly overcome with anger, but trying to maintain it, "That is how he's getting away with this, because you're going soft on him, you turn a blind eye to this, and this is why we are in this situation"

"So you're saying that it's my fault? What exactly are you trying to say Logan?"

Reverting, he swallowed nervously, as all his confidence seems to disappear within a second, as he stands up more straighter, stating, "I'm just saying, things are lining perfectly with Chopard, and I'm just warning you that he could be a hazard to have around in this company"

At this, I say, "I don't know what you're thinking in that head of yours, but I don't think Chopard performance has nothing to do with the file as you suspect"

Rounding the desk, I lean against it, "And you don't have to warn me about anything, that's my job"

All three of us stood silent, I honestly just feel bad for the investigator, because he had to listen to whatever crap Logan was putting out on the table.

I sigh as I dismiss them both out of my office, as I need to think about Logan's proposal, and as stupid as it sounds, I have to consider it a possibility, even though I don't remotely believe it.

But if I were to believe him, I need more evidence.

I rub my head, there is a lot of thinking up here.

As both of the men leave my office, I look up, looking at the back of their heads, and at the same time–Liam comes in, crossing paths with them. Paying them no mind.

Just great, I thought.

Could Logan be right? Only time will tell.
