Chapter 1

I love the rain.

It's quiet, the outside world is being silent by the raindrops hitting any and all surfaces, people are scrambling inside stores to take shelter from the violent rain, coming close to being considered a thunderstorm.

I always loved this type of weather as a kid, it was my excuse to take a two to three hour nap and abandon my responsibilities. Even now as an adult, if it rains, it is the perfect excuse to isolate myself from everyone and recharge my social battery.

But I can't enjoy this rainy day because a motherfucker is on my floor crying like a bitch.

She's hysterical, her breath is caught in her throat, and she's coughing up a storm.

If she throws up on my floor, so help me god.

She quickly composes herself, as she smudges her makeup with her sleeves, trying to quickly wipe the waterworks, her mascara running down her face as she looks up at me with her tear filled eyes. I watched in disgust as some of her tears still dropped onto my floor.

I will tell the janitor about that.

"Pl-please Ms. Cantrell" She starts off again, this is her third time pleading, "Just give me another chance, I swear, I will devote my life to you"

I looked at the poor pitiful thing, but I don't feel sorry for her.

Instead of comforting her and letting her down easily with sympathy like any other boss would, I prop my feet on my desk and stare at her mercilessly.

Her eyes widen as I change my facial expression from boredom to intimidating, she knows that I will not and won't give anyone a second chance, she should have known that since the moment she started working for me.

Hell, she was my assistant, so she must have not paid attention to the orientation presentation given to her three months ago.

What a stupid fucking bitch.

She's yet another assistant that can't keep up with the pace of this office.

I rolled my eyes, setting my feet on the floor as I stood up, towering over her from behind my desk as she remained on the floor.

"Listen to me" I carefully say, looking straight into her soul, "In my office, there is no room for mistakes, especially in an important position like yours, do you realize that anyone would kill for your job?" I question, crossing my arms as she stays silent, so I continue.

"You screw up for the second chance in the timespan of three months, the first one I let it slide because it was your very first day, but now I have undo what you did, and that takes time out of me being an actual CEO"

She held her breath as she watched me walk around my desk, leaning on it and crossing my legs, staring down at her, not breaking eye contact.

"So consider this the last time ever stepping foot in this office as for you're permanently fired"

My now–ex assistant doesn't move for a second, she doesn't even blink, and for a second, I thought she was frozen in time but then–

"No, no, no, please I can't–" She's gasping for air, and hiccupping, due to the amount of crying she has done within the past six minutes.

"I can't be fired, I have bills to pay, I have to afford food and I need to survive, please! I have nowhere else to work, please! I promise that I will become your assistant for life!"

Then she did something that I never thought someone would do on a Friday morning, she bowed her head down to my feet and was actually pleading for life or death.

"Please Ms. Cantrell, you're my god and I will become your servant for life, I will do anything for you, just give me another chance and I won't disappoint you. You gave me a purpose in life and I can't live without you, I inspired to be like you" She says as she went through the motion of bowing up and down at my feet.

I close my eyes as she continues on her pathetic pleads, my mouth curls up in a sly smirk. I don't know where this pleasure started, but I love it when people beg for me for my mercy.

Maybe because many people think that they can take advantage of me when I give them the chance but when they learn that I won't take in to their bullshit, they beg for me to take them back.

As I continued to listen to her pleading, she began screaming and actually crying, so loud that maybe the entire floor could hear her.

This obviously irritates me, it makes my ears ring, so as she is basically screaming on the top of her lungs, I reach towards my desk phone, and call security.

Thankfully security was already on their way when they heard the screaming, they opened my office door and began making their way towards the women.

They pull her up by her arms as she tries to scramble out of their grip, but they're too strong, effortlessly pulling her out of the door, while she's still screaming for mercy, the doors closes, her screams quieting down as she's being pulled away further from my office.

I just stand here staring in debrief.

That was so dramatic, for no reason. It's not that she didn't have a good high paying job that makes her live paycheck to paycheck, maybe she spent all her paycheck buying that Chanel bag, who knows.

She could just get a job at Amazon or something, it's not like she's gonna get turned down from any job anyway, since I know she's gonna put 'working for Hailey Cantrell' on her pathetic resume.

I sigh as I return to my chair. I wish she could have begged a little more, it was like music to my ears but her screaming had to ruin it.

I swear I'm not a sadist, maybe I am, but if being a sadist got me to where I am today, then I'll happily wear that title until the day I die.

A few minutes of silence goes by and now I have another thing added to my to-do list.

Find another assistant.

Shit, in the worst time possible, when a new product is about to launch.

I spring up from my chair and head towards the elevator to make my way down to the first floor.

While I walk, people scramble out of my way to make a walkway for me, the people inside the elevator scramble out as well, some of them mumbling 'sorry' to me and some will take the stairs instead.

And honestly, it's better this way, show them any type of sympathy for them, and they will use it against you, you give them an inch and they take a mile.

I rather them fear and respect me than not take me seriously and play around.

The elevator dings as it reaches the first floor, people around me are straightening their backs and moving out of the way, just so I won't fire them on the spot.

But that was only one time.

I made it to the front desk, where Ruby, my secretary, is typing away at her computer, focusing hard at the screen. Once she looks away for a second, she spots me and turns her attention towards me.

She smiles at me, whilst I keep my blank face on, she is wearing a white button-up shirt, paired with a royal purple jacket and pencil skirt.

"Hey Ms. Cantrell" she said, keeping the smile on her face.

"Hey Ruby, listen I need–"

"Another assistant? Already working on it, I've gone through almost half of the applications that have been sent through. I started looking through them the moment you pulled we-shall-not-say-her-name into your office"

I stared at her, letting my smirk simmer onto my face, she is the only few people that I let cut me off, and not firing them on the spot. She is one of my best employees here, she has worked for me for three years and she never fails to impress me with her skills.

"Good" I said, then an idea pops into my mind, "Say why don't you become–"

"Nope, nope, absolutely not, look Ms. Cantrell, as much as I love you, I would rather sit here and look pretty, while typing away at this desk, if I become your assistant, the place would fall apart in minutes, even second"

A half-laugh comes out of me, but then I compose myself of laughing, "Nonsense, I think you would do amazing at being my assistant, you– out of all people know the ends and out of the entire office building, and a new person working would have trouble at that"

"That is why I'm looking through the application for that quality, being able to retain information, and I will coach them through the progress of working for you"

"Okay" I nodded, "I trust that you will find a candidate that will be perfect for me"

"I will, after that substandard women, I will update the requirements" As Ruby says that, she points towards the double glass doors, and there she is.

My ex-assistant, standing outside in the rain, the now heavy rain hitting her hard, soaking her head to toe, as she crosses her arms as people with umbrellas walk past her, not giving her any looks and ignoring her. She's shivering, probably waiting for a taxi or uber.

Absolutely pathetic, and worse of all, she's ruining that beautiful Chanel bag.

I turn around, unable to hide my disgusted face, but Ruby is used to it.

"One last thing, make sure you hire someone who can at least drive a damn car" I said before I began walking away.

And still in earshot, I hear "Yes Ms. Cantrell"
