Chapter 30

Olivia hesitated as she eyed Lauren standing on the front porch. She couldn't imagine what Lauren wanted with her. Her first instinct was to tell her they had nothing to discuss and close the door, but she was not raised to be rude. She knew Ryan would not be happy that she was talking to Lauren, but she was definitely curious. In the end, her curiosity won out.

"Sure. Come in." She stepped back, allowing Lauren to enter the house.

Lauren looked around the room at all the boxes in various stages of being unpacked, raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow and asked "Is someone moving in or out?"

"I'm moving in." Olivia replied, trying to keep her voice even.

"Hmmm. That's cute." Lauren said with a sneer.

Olivia knew in that moment that she had made a big mistake. She should never have allowed Lauren in the house. Yes. Hindsight was definitely twenty twenty.

"So tell me Olivia, how does it make you feel to be the other woman?" This time, Lauren didn't bother to hide the disdain in her voice.

Olivia wasn't going to hide it either. "What do you want Lauren?"

"Simple. I want Ryan." She replied with a smirk.

"Ryan has made it clear he doesn't want you. He and I are together now. I think you should leave." Olivia made a move towards the door.

"I wouldn't know. He hasn't returned any of my calls or texts. Maybe he's not getting them." Lauren looked accusingly at Olivia.

"He's gotten them. He just has nothing to say. It's over Lauren." Olivia made another move towards the door.

"How long was he sleeping with you behind my back?" Lauren asked, venom dripping from her lips.

"I'm afraid you're sadly mistaken. You were the one cheating, not Ryan. He and I did not get together until long after the two of you ended things." Olivia said, as calmly as she could manage.

"Are you sure about that? I mean about me being the only one cheating?" Lauren asked with another smirk. "Ryan is not perfect. Far from it in fact. I hope you're not naive enough to believe he is. He has always had a bit of a wandering eye. It doesn't help that he constantly has women throwing themselves at him."

"I know Ryan's not perfect. I really don't care. I don't believe in perfect anyway." Olivia said defensively.

"Just so you know, Ryan and I just hit a rough patch. It's not the first time, but he always comes back to me. I forgave him for his uh...indiscretions. I thought he would have had the courtesy to do the same."

Against her better judgment, Olivia's curiosity continued to get the best of her. "What the hell are you talking about? His 'indiscretions.' You were the one who cheated."

"Oh honey. You really are naive. By your reaction, I'm guessing he never told you. Shame on him. Sure, we had a nasty little spat, but it sure as hell didn't take him long to go out drinking and hook up with my best friend. I admit, that was a little test. One that he failed miserably. I was stupid enough to think that he would be faithful. Boy was I wrong, but I still forgave him. Maybe you should ask him about Heather."

Olivia was flabbergasted. Surely Lauren was lying. Ryan said his and Lauren's relationship ended because of her cheating. Even if Ryan had cheated, he would never have kept that information from her. Right?

Lauren sensed she had struck a nerve. She plastered a fake smile on her face. "I'm sorry honey. I guess he didn't tell you. Don't worry about me. I'll see myself out."

*******

Ryan let himself into the house after finishing his podcast. He was ready to tackle getting Olivia's things unpacked so they could spend the rest of the evening relaxing.

"Livvy. I'm home babe." He called out.

She was sitting on the couch, a blank expression on her face. It looked like she had only gotten one, maybe two boxes unpacked.

"Are you okay babe?" He was worried. She was just staring off into space. She had not even blinked. "Livvy?" He asked again.

She finally turned to look at him. "Who is Heather?" She asked softly.

Fuck!

He felt like the wind had just been knocked out of him.

"How? What do you know about Heather?" He stammered.

"Not very much. That's why I'm asking." Olivia was also feeling like she had gotten the wind knocked out of her. Ryan's face said it all: Guilty.

"She's just a girl. She was Lauren's friend. It was nothing. How did you know..."

She cut him off. "Lauren came by today." Olivia was surprised by how calm she sounded, because on the inside, she was shaking.

"You let her in?" Ryan asked in shock.

"Against my better judgement, yes I did. But that's not the point. Ryan, why the hell did you let me believe that she was the one who cheated on you? How could you keep something like that from me? After the whole argument we had over keeping secrets, why did you keep this one."

"It's not like that Livvy."

"Then why don't you enlighten me." She choked out.

He took a deep breath and slowly let it out. "Lauren and I got in a huge fight. I went out drinking. Her friend Heather showed up. I'm honestly not even sure anything happened. She said it did, but I don't remember."

"Honestly Ryan, I don't know what's worse. You hooking up with your girlfriends friend, or being so damn drunk that you don't remember if it even happened or not. Why did you keep this from me?"

"Because I'm not proud of it. I wasn't in a good place. I did some things in the past that I'm ashamed of now. It's my past though. I would never do that to you."

"Ryan, I don't give a damn about your past, and I would never judge you for it. All I care about is that you are honest with me. I thought we had that, but I guess I was wrong. I asked you if you were keeping anything from me and you looked me right in the eye and you lied to me. Now I can't help but wonder what else you are keeping from me."

"Livvy. I'm sorry."

"And I'm tired of your apologies. After a while, they start to all sound the same."

He watched as she grabbed her purse and keys and stormed to the door.

"Where are you going? Please Livvy, don't leave." He pleaded.

"I need some space Ryan. I need to think. Don't start blowing up my phone either. I've just got to get out of here for a while."

He watched sadly as she slammed the door behind her. It took everything he had not to run after her, but she asked for space and the very least he could do was give it to her, even though it was tearing him apart.

He had really fucked up this time.

A/N: Do you think Olivia is overreacting by something Ryan did in the past, or does she have a right to be upset? Just curious on everyone's opinion.
