Chapter 3: Natalia
I woke up Monday morning at 6. A bit earlier than needed, I'll admit but I was determined to be more than ready. I hopped in the shower, shampooed my hair, washed my body and hopped right back out. I brushed my teeth before ducking out and grabbing my blow dryer, thinking my curly, wild hair wouldn't exactly give the best impression for my first day. Then I focused on my outfit. I opened my closet, looking at the colors in my closet. Black dress, Black pants, hmm, black shirt. I grabbed my phone dialing Missy. I nearly laughed when she answered, her voice heavy with sleep.
"Hey, didn't mean to wake you." I heard her yawn. "No. I've been up for hours. What's up?" I shrugged as I put the phone on speaker. "The usual. I can't figure out what to wear." "Hmm, since it's your first day and it's a special day. Wear the black dress." I rolled my eyes knowing which one she was talking about. I reached into the back of my closet, grabbing it. I eyed it before turning my attention back to Missy. "Are you sure it's appropriate for work?" "Absolutely. It hugs your body in all the right places and it shows the right amount of cleavage. So you're set to fancy the pants off anyone in that building today." I smiled as I started getting dressed, Missy laughing at me as I shuffled around.
"So, nervous?" I scoffed "Like you wouldn't believe." "I don't know why. You'll be great and you know it." I nodded into the mirror as I smoothed the dress. "I would like to think that but I have a feeling the son would be a lot harder to convince than the mother was." I turned toward the closet again, grabbing my stilettos and pumps. "Stilettos or pumps?" Missy thought about it before blurting out "Stilettos, of course, stilettos." I slipped them on and grabbed my makeup bag, settling for my everyday look. Mascara and lipgloss. "Hey!" I jumped as I nearly poked my eye out. "What?" "I thought you fainted on me." I laughed and finished my mascara. "No, what were you saying?" She chuckled. "I was saying that your boss is a hunk." I rolled my eyes, slowly fixing up my hair. "What? Where did you see him? I don't even know what he looks like. I've never met him." "I googled him." "Stalker."
We both laughed as she went back to the subject. "I'm serious, Nat. He's seriously good looking. I'm surprised you haven't seen him. He's always in the magazines and papers." I grabbed my earrings, slipping them on. "Because Missy, that's inappropriate and he's now my boss. Plus, I am sure I have better things to do than worry about what the tabloids say about him." "Sure you do, but I have all the time in the world." I rolled my eyes, checking my watch. 7:00, perfect timing. I grabbed my purse and phone, before grabbing my keys and leaving the apartment.
I took Missy off speaker and up to my ear. "On your way?" "Yep, I am thinking of stopping by the coffee shop by the office. How do you think he takes his coffee?" "Email him and ask." The idea of emailing him again sent me into a warping feeling of dread. "I'll do it in the cab. Text you later?" "You better." I chuckled and hung up, slipping my phone into my purse. I walked out of my apartment building. I stuck my hand out, trying to haul a cab, common New York behavior. "Ms. Florence?" I turned my head to the left seeing a man dressed in black, salt and pepper hair covering his head. "Yes?" "I am Jerry, your driver." I looked at him confused. "Driver?" "Mr.Payton sent me to drive you to work this morning." "Oh, yes. I'm sorry." He smiled, sympathetically. I smiled back as he opened the door to the backseat. I made my way to the car, stopping before I climbed in. "Please call me Natalia." "Absolutely Natalia." I climbed into the car, the feeling of the leather, impressing me. I never had a job like this, a driver picking me up for work. I was zapped out of my head when Jerry asked me a question. "I'm sorry?" "Any stops before work, Ms. Florence?" "Just coffee."
He nodded, smiling. The conversation seemed to cease until we pulled up to a coffee shop. I watched as Jerry hopped out of the car, opening the door for me. "Thank you Jerry." I motioned to walk but turned back to him. "Would you like to come in with me? Please, I insist." I watched as his lips curved into a smile, happy for the inclusion. We walked in and stood in line. I looked at my watch once more. 7:25, okay still not bad. My mind ran back to Thursday night. 8 AM sharp. "Next." I walked up to the cashier placing an order for a mocha latte, a green tea, and a coffee black. I turned to Jerry. "Can I get you anything?" He seemed touched by the gesture but politely declined. The barista worked quickly and before I knew it, I was back in the car, on the way to work. I seemed to be in my own head as we pulled up in front of the building. Jerry opened my door, helping me out. "Thank you." He nodded, walking with me to the door, opening the front door for me. "Good luck on your first day, Miss.. Natalia."
I smiled back at him before walking into the lobby, I said hello to Tony before walking towards the desk. My eyes connected with Ashlyn as she smiled at me. "Good morning." "Morning, how are you?" She nodded, rubbing her bump. "Good, hanging in there." She looked at the time and flashed an approving smile. "7:35, not bad." "I am nothing, if not punctual." I placed the drinks on her counter, handing her the green tea. "Here you go, I wasn't sure what to grab you. So I played it safe and got you some tea." She seemed pleased by the gesture. "Thank you honey. But I have something for you too." I watched her as she grabbed something, handing it to me. I looked at her confused. "They're contracts.. Blabber more like. Dumb things like promising you won't steal from the company, abuse your company credit card, etc."
"Credit card?" She nodded "Yes, I'll explain it all once everyone gets situated. But for now, just head up there and read the documents." "Thank you." I turned and made my way to the elevators, contracts and drinks in hand. I stepped into the elevator, pressing the 20th floor. Here we go. I tried to calm my breathing as I watched the elevator edge closer to the 20th. I smiled as the door slid open and revealed the beautiful floor. I walked over to our joint offices. My office, of course, the smaller one. I opened the door, loving it. My desk was big and white, shiny. Reminding me of the marbles floors just outside. My office chair, black, only matte instead of shiny. I placed the drinks and papers on the desk as I admired the computer. Slick and new, it seemed like a giant monster, new to me. I let my fingers slide against the keys. I moved my hand and placed them on the chair, this is what heaven feels like. My head turned towards the windows. The view is almost as amazing as the conference room view. I smirked as I grabbed the papers, his black coffee, and my mocha latte.
I knocked on his door, hearing no answer. I opened the door, the sight of his office overpowering the sight of mine. His desk was massive, black in color and shiny, of course. His chair is just as massive as the desk. I placed his coffee on the desk, before taking one last look and walking out, closing the door. I walked down the hall and turned into the main conference room. The view once again taking my breath away. I eyed the big chair, knowing I had the room to myself for a bit. I sat down, taking a sip of my latte before grabbing a pen from my purse and getting to work on these contracts.
