Author of the Week|ravelings
Congratulations to our newest author of the week, ravelings.
ravelings, otherwise known as Samantha, has been a member of Wattpad for over two years, accumulation 149 fans and eight books. She is incredibly underrated for how sophisticated and unique her stories are, and deserves much more than what she has been given. Although all her novels stand out, two in particular were nominated several times, The Things Left Unsaid and Almond Boy.
The Things Left Unsaid is a short story, consisting of thoughts between two characters that are never said. These thoughts are emotionally drawing and captivating, so unique and interesting and complex that reader want to continue reading to delve into the two main characters, Marnie and Hudson. This is a must read, both light and funny and occasionally morose.
Quote: "When I saw you walking through the hallways, even though you were pissed, I wanted to hug you. I don't even know you. But you look hugable." (TTLU Ch. 1)
Almond Boy is the story about Eliot and Emma, who sit on the same gym bench during gym class. Their quirky, snappy dialogue that occurs in the first chapter is eye catching, making the reader more and more interested in the dynamic between the two characters. Imediately, Samantha hints that there is something wrong with Emma, adding a suspenseful twist to the story.
Quote: "He takes up the entire bench with his crap, his backpack tilted on its back, his schoolwork spewing out of it like paper vomit. So, when Emma staggers by and moves some of his things to sit down, some of the papers fall off the bench." (AB Ch. 1)
A Word of Thanks: What would I like to say to my fans? My, I could go on for hours, I'll have to narrow it. I guess just one gigantic thank you, to all of you. I love you all and want to give you each hugs because you're all awesome. Thank you for sticking with me during the times when my updates take centuries to come up, and thank you for being supportive and encouraging when I'm losing my mind. You guys are the cat's pajamas, simply because you deal with me saying things like you guys are the cat's pajamas. There's nothing that makes my day brighten as fast as one of you just talking to me, it truly makes my day. I could say oodles more, but I guess it all boils down to just a huge thank you. And for you, Anne, I just wanted to say that this whole idea is really sweet, and you run it beautifully. I've been on here for a long while now and I've seen people try this and it just falls flat - but you are just a genius. I'm flattered to even be a part of this community, and I can't thank you enough.
Some Tips: 1) Similarly to coloring out of the lines, write beyond the rules. Break free of your comfort zones, because if you stay in them too long they'll end up becoming prisons. Try new things, and if it doesn't work, it doesn't work. Don't be afraid of failure, because here on Wattpad we are a community of writers who have failed before and we'll probably fail again - but don't stop trying. If you just stay with what you know, you're stifling yourself the chance to do something amazing.
2) Read, read, read. I know you've heard it before, but I'm telling you again, you need to read. And though it helps to read what's in your genre, read out of your genre too. If you're a romance writer, find a high-action fantasy to check out every once in a while. It may hold just what you need.
3) I don't want to say ignore your fan-base, but don't be afraid to disregard them. (I know it sounds awful, but) if you need to do something, even if your fan-base disagrees, do it.Take in what you can from everyone, but don't be afraid to listen to yourself. If you're wrong, you're wrong, and you can fix your mistakes by editing your story. A mistake is not the end of the world, I promise you.
4) Sort of contradicting, but also not: take advantage of this website. This website has a ton to offer, from the newcomers and the veterans. Take it all in, sift through the new information, and start writing with your new knowledge. Writing truly is a learning experience.
5) Pour your story out of you. You need to have passion for what you're writing. You can't "wait" for inspiration, you need to embody it. Your best work is going to be one that you're excited to write, the one that incites your daydreams, and that you connect with the most. Have fun, and happy writing
Congratulations again, Samantha!
