Chapter 4

This chapter is twice as long as the last, so buckle up.

*not mine*

Percy's POV:

Percy woke up to Annabeth sitting up sharply next to me, gasping and clutching her stomach. He looked at the clock and saw it was 12:49am. He leaned over to Annabeth and drew soft circles on her back while she curled back up into a ball. After a minute, she relaxed.

"You okay now?" He asked.

"Yeah, I'm good," She sighed. "Just another fake contraction and now I have a headache."

"I'll go get you some water."

"Thanks Seaweed Brain."

"Of course."

Percy walked downstairs to the kitchen to get her a water bottle so she would have it through the night. He walked upstairs to see her in deep thought, with her eyebrows knit and her eyes staring at the wall. When she saw him, she looked at him and smiled. "Thank you, Perce."

"No problem." He answered.

She took a few sips of her water and then placed it on the nightstand. Not that long after, she grabbed at her sides and curled into another ball, panting.

Percy moved closer to her again and rubbed her back. "Annabeth? Are you sure you're good?" He asked, panicked.

She grunted and rocked back and forth. "Percy, what time is it?"

"It's 12:57, why?"

"...I think I'm going into labor."

He sat there, shocked for a couple of seconds. "Annabeth you're only 8 months along, aren't we supposed to have another month?"

"Well they are coming now."

Percy got out of bed and helped Annabeth stand up. She brushed her hair and teeth while he put on some black sweatpants and a plain while T-shirt. After helping her get dressed and getting their bags ready, they left the house.

Percy was glad that the majority of New Greece was built already. They had a small hospital in the middle of the town that wasn't far from them. After arriving, Annabeth was quickly put in a room and waited for a certain doctor.

Will Solace walked in the room shortly after. He was surprised to see them there already.

"Damn Annie," He laughed. "They are already sick of you."

"Don't call me Annie," She snapped.

Will raised his hands. "Sure, whatever. I'm gonna have to check how dilated you are, okay? Put your feet up here," he said pointing to the stirrups.

"Okay..." Annabeth murmured. She grabbed Percy's hand and he started rubbing small circles in the back of it.

After a minute, Will spoke up. "You're only 5 cm right now. Got to wait till 10 before we can start."

Annabeth groaned and fell back into her pillows. Percy winced, this was going to be a while.

Annabeth's POV:

Annabeth tried to sleep, but found it fruitless. It was around 3:30am, and Percy had just stepped out of the room to call his mom and tell her that Annabeth was in labor. Her water broke around half an hour ago, and the contractions only got worse. She said a few prayers to Artemis, Apollo, and Athena.

Percy came back in then and sat next to her, holding her hand. "How are you holding up?" He asked.

She moaned and turned to face him a little bit better. "I've been better..."

He chuckled at her, and kissed her forehead. "You're doing great, Wise Girl."

"Thanks Perce."

At that moment, Will's sister Kayla came in to check on her. "How you feeling, Annabeth?" Kayla questioned. "I'm here to check and see if we have made any progress yet."

"Okay," Annabeth mumbled. That seemed to be her usual answer currently.

Kayla did her thing for a minute or two, which Annabeth found to be very uncomfortable. Percy must have noticed because he squeezed her hand again and muttered words of encouragement. The thing is, Annabeth couldn't get an epidural because they didn't have the stuff for it. She was the first Greek demigod to have kids here in such a long time, so they never worried about carrying such items.

Would be nice to have one right about now, she thought. Finally, Kayla stood back up and took off her gloves.

"You are at about 7.5cm right now. My guess is that you will reach 10 by about 6:45," She concluded.

Great. I get to wait even longer. But she kept her mouth shut and just nodded.

Percy's POV

At 5:50am, Percy decided to call their friends and let them know where they were and that Annabeth was in labor. He called Thalia first, who was coincidentally supposed to arrive this morning with her hunters for a visit. He sent an Iris Message to her and found her awake in her tent, eating breakfast.

"Hey Kelp Head," She smirked. "You look like shit right now what's wrong with you?"

"You know your brother said the same thing to me about a week ago."

"What can I say, he takes after me. Now what's up?"

Percy laughed and then continued. "Annabeth is in labor right now, and the babies are supposed to be here in not too long. Just thought you should be one of the first to know."

Thalia froze for a minute, then her face broke out in a smile. "No way, Jackson that's great! I'll try to get there as soon as I can. We aren't far from Camp, but I'll try to get Lady Artemis to let me leave now."

"Okay Thals, if you insist," He said.

"I can't believe that you guys are gonna be parents. And my godbabies are almost here!" She said squealing. Thalia doesn't squeal.

Percy had to laugh at that one. They had asked Grover and Thalia to be the godparents of their kids if anything were to happen, and of course they said yes. Both of them were happy to be the ones asked by Percy and Annabeth, and had probably been the most excited of their friends.

"See you soon, Thalia," Percy finished. "I got to call the others too."

"Bye Percy!" She said, and swiped through the message.

Percy called all the others to let them know that was happening, and all of them were on the way. He told them that they can just come later, but they all insisted. He decided to go back into the room to be with his wife, and she found her face scrunched up in pain. Percy rushed to her side and grabbed her hand. He also put a cold, damp washcloth on her forehead to keep her cooled down. After a minute, she relaxed and closed her eyes.

Will walked in after that. "How you doing, Annie?" Annabeth just glared at him.

"I'm going to check and see if you've made any progress."

She nodded and put her legs up on the stirrups. Will smiled and said to them, "Good news guys, she's fully dilated and we can start."

Annabeth turned to Percy, looking scared. Percy kissed her. "It's okay, you got it," he whispered to her. She nodded, still frightened. But the both of them were ready for it to be over, so they listened to Will.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Will's POV:
Will Solace had once said after the satyr baby Chuck was born that he had birthed enough babies for the next five years. Unfortunately, those five years were up.
Kayla and himself were delivering the babies. In front of him, poor Annabeth screamed in pain as she pushed. She had been doing this for half an hour and Will couldn't help but feel sorry. The good news was that the first baby was crowning before him.
"I can see the head of the first baby, Annabeth. You should have 2-5 more pushes and the first one should be here," He said. "Percy, if you wanna see you can."
Now the average male would not want to see or deal with such a thing, but Percy's eyes sparkled with amusement and he nodded slowly. He stood up and went next to Will. Again, most men would have passed out on the spot. But he just looked amused, and then looked back at poor Annabeth, who was crying in pain, and he rubbed her leg affectionately. He then went to sit back next to her and told her how close she was to being done. Annabeth seemed relieved to be almost done with baby #1.
After a couple more pushes, the head of the first baby was almost out. "Annabeth, the head of the first baby is almost out, just one more push and they will be here. Percy, if you want to cut the umbilical cord then come back over here."
Percy stood up but stayed by Annabeth. She tilted her chin down and started to push again, squeezing the life out of Percy's hand. Finally, the baby slipped out into his hands and wailed. Will smiled.
"First baby is a boy," He said. Percy looked overjoyed by this and Annabeth smiled, leaning back for a minute. Percy walked over and cut the baby's umbilical cord. After that, Will placed the baby on Annabeth's chest. She started crying again. Both Percy and Annabeth cooed in wonder over the crying baby in front of them. It was so sweet that Will hated to ruin the moment.
"Uh, I got some good news and bad news..." He started.
Percy frowned. "What's wrong?" He asked.
"The second baby is in a breech position. I'm going to have to manually turn it. On the bright side, this baby is small so it shouldn't hurt as bad as normal. The other bad news, the baby is a lot smaller than the first," Will stated. He looked up to find Annabeth wide eyed and scared. The poor woman was going to come out of this with PTSD.
"I'm going to get more help, we have to do this fast," He said. Will rushed out the room leaving just Percy, Annabeth, and Kayla. His jaw dropped to the ground when he stepped out of the room.
"Need help?" He asked, smiling.
Will nodded fast. Before him stood his father, Apollo and his sister, Artemis.
Artemis spoke, "Then what are we waiting for?"
And the three of them rushed back into the room.
Annabeth's POV:
Annabeth thought she knew pain before this. Oh how wrong she was. After crying and screaming for what seemed like forever, her son was finally on her chest. He was still red and purple and screaming, so she couldn't really tell who he looked like. He did have blonde hair though.
Next to her, Percy stroked his son's hair and touched his little hands that were balled into fists. When the baby felt it, he grasped Percy's finger in his hand. That was all it took for Percy to start crying silently at their baby. It didn't last long though, because Annabeth felt a horrible tug in her stomach, and knew it was the other baby. She let out a whimper and held her son tight to her.
Just them, Will came back with Apollo and Artemis right behind him, and Annabeth was relieved. Artemis looked older than usual, about 25 with a high sleek ponytail and wore dark blue scrubs. Apollo looked just like his son in a white lab coat and light blue scrubs. Both of them snapped their gloves on and Artemis sat in front of her. She muttered an ancient Greek chant, and immediately Annabeth felt better. She assumed it was a light anesthesia. Apollo took the baby off her chest and took him to the back of the room to examine him.
"'kay I'm done, your turn," Artemis said to Apollo. He gave the baby to Will to finish his examination. Apollo took his sister's place.
"Hello Annabeth dear. I have to turn your baby now okay?" He stated. Annabeth nodded and grabbed Percy's hand. Apollo reached up her cervix and turned the baby around. She made the mistake of assuming that it wouldn't hurt after Artemis's chant. Wrong. While it did help some, it still felt as if her guts were turned inside out. She let out another scream and looked over at Artemis.
"Sorry honey," Artemis said. "I can't relive all of the pain. Blame Gaea."
That made Annabeth annoyed, but thankfully Apollo was done.
"Damn, I haven't had to do that in a while. Your turn again sis," He said. "Oh and Percy, take your shirt off."
Percy blinked. "What?"
"The first few hours of a baby's life are what are referred to as the golden hours," Artemis explained, sitting back down in front of Annabeth. "For that time the baby is placed on the mother's chest to develop close contact and parental safeness. For twins, it's harder. Especially because this baby is a lot smaller and was breech, it's going to you while your wife delivers the placenta and holds your son."
"That way, the second baby gets just as much time to have skin to skin contact as the first baby," Will said.
"You two will switch between your children that way they aren't relying on solely one parent," Apollo said, placing the now cleaned baby Jackson back on Annabeth's chest.
"Oh, Okay," Percy replied, and took off his shirt. Annabeth tried hard not to stare at his abs.
"Annabeth get ready to push," Artemis started. "This one should be a lot quicker than the first, and easier."
The goddess was right. This one felt a lot less painful, and it only took 4 pushes before Artemis said she could see the head.
"Give me two more pushes, honey, then they should be here," the goddess told her.
It only took 1 more push before Artemis gasped and shouted, "She's not breathing!"
"WHAT?!" everyone else screamed.
Well it was a girl. Apollo rushed over to the baby and took it from his sister. He flipped her over on her stomach and rubbed her back hard and fast. He chanted a light song in ancient Greek while Artemis gave encouraging words. Finally, the baby started wailing and Annabeth let out a sigh of relief, as did everyone else in the room. Apollo passed her to Percy, who held the baby tight.
"Congrats guys," Will said from his father's side. Apollo turned to his son and hugged him tight. Will looked surprised, but then hugged him back.
"I'm very proud of you, son," He comforted, releasing the hug. "You successfully delivered a baby by yourself-"
"He had help," Kayla muttered from the back of the room. Apollo smiled and hugged her also.
"Yes he did."
Kayla seemed happy about the approval of her father.
Finally, Percy spoke up, "With all due respect, why did you two decide to come here? I mean, we are so thankful for your help, but why did you come?"
Artemis smiled at him and stood up. "After you Iris Messaged Thalia, she asked me if we could leave early that way she would be here when they are born. I agreed to this and we packed our bags and came here, which we weren't supposed to be here till around 10:00. Being the goddess of childbirth, I sensed danger in your delivery and told my brother here to come with me. Sure enough we were needed."
Apollo coughed. "We also still kinda owed you two after everything you've done for us after two wars. And you were having twins, so it sort of hit a soft spot."
Annabeth smirked at this. "Well, thank you for coming, we are so grateful."
Artemis winked at her and took their daughter away from Percy to be cleaned. He didn't look happy about it. Annabeth laughed and passed their son to him. Percy smiled and kissed her, then took their baby.
"Annabeth," Apollo chided. "We still have to get the placenta and stitch you back up."
She groaned which earned a laugh around the room. It didn't take long to deliver the placenta and before she knew it, the stitches were over. Artemis then placed her daughter on her chest, who was now asleep. For once, Percy and Annabeth just sat there and enjoyed the peace with their new family.
