Chapter 31
This one is really short, sorry but the central idea of it can't be added in with other stuff. Also, I keep getting people in my comments spell-checking my writing saying that "Perce" is "Percy". Just so you know, I reread my chapters more than once before publishing. I'm also really bad at spelling, but I try my best. I mean "Perce" when I write, it's another nickname for Percy given in the books. Just had to explain that.
All rights to Rick.
Annabeth's POV:
Annabeth stood in front of the floor length mirror in their bedroom. She wore a long black dress, as were a lot of women around camp. They had told all their friends about the baby already. Considering their, for lack of better word, status at camp, many people felt drawn to remorse for them.
Today, they were burying the baby. More specifically, they had been buried and Percy and Annabeth were going to see the grave. Considering the baby was never born, there was no major funeral of sorts. Instead, Nico had said he would oversee them being lowered down and made sure they made it to Elysium. That was sort of Nico's forte, making sure all of the dead were respected and properly buried. Both Annabeth and Percy appreciated him doing that for them.
Word had spread fast after Jason and Piper had returned. Part of that annoyed Annabeth. Every time she stepped outside, people would give sympathetic looks or whisper to their friends. Today, everyone around camp wore black. 99% of them weren't even going to see this baby's grave at the same time Percy and Annabeth were, but they did to show support.
Annabeth sighed and opened her closet, looking for a pair of shoes. She bent down to grab her black flats, but something caught her eye. Sitting on the shelf off to the side neatly folded, was a black headscarf.
She pulled it off the shelf and stared at it. Annabeth thought about what she had said to her mother and the rest of the goddesses when they were at camp. Don't expect me to wear that again unless someone dies, which hopefully won't happen.
Well unfortunately, that had happened.
She decided she should probably wear it. Many other women would probably have one on too. While they were all Greek demigods, the vast majority made no connection to the ancient culture. Funerals and honoring the dead, however, many demigoddesses would.
After pinning it halfway back on her head, Percy walked back into their room wearing a black suit. He gave a sad smile to her and a small kiss. "Ready?" he asked.
Annabeth nodded. He grabbed her hand and they walked downstairs. Very fittingly, dark clouds loomed overhead because the gods must've hated her (which many did). Silena and Luke were being watched by Malcolm and basically the rest of the Athena cabin.
After walking across camp, receiving too many stares, they almost made it to the cemetery but were stopped by a few people. First in the pack was Nico. Travis, Connor, and Leo for once weren't acting manic, but stood still and solemn. Hazel, Katie, and Piper stood next to them. Both Piper and Katie wore similar back headscarves. Piper was also holding Jason's hand, who was next to Reyna and Frank. Rachel Elizabeth Dare wasn't far from the rest of the girls. Finally, standing with Nico, was Thalia and Grover.
Annabeth figured that Clarisse would've been there had she not been pregnant. While Annabeth didn't mind, Clarisse had tried to give her condolences from a distance. Annabeth could tell she didn't want her still being pregnant to be the first person to comfort her. Not to mention, Clarisse didn't do comfort.
Nico was the first person to fully approach them. To Annabeth's surprise, Nico hugged her. He hugged her tight and stroked her hair lightly. "How are you doing?" he asked.
Annabeth sighed, "Definitely been better..."
"It's okay," he soothed. "It's alright."
Nico would've been one of the last people she'd thought would give her a hug. But Nico understood death, and he understood what it's like to lose a family member. He released their hug and gave her one last pat on the shoulder. He and Percy exchanged greetings as well.
Thalia walked up from behind him. "We just wanted to say we're sorry for your baby." She gestured to the rest of their friends behind them. "And if you need anything, just ask us."
"Thank you, Thalia," Percy said.
"Of course."
After talking to the rest of their friends for a little longer, they split ways again. Percy took her arm again and they walked to the cemetery.
Annabeth wanted to fall on her knees and cry the second she saw it. As fitted, a new grave had been laid to the right of Silena's and Charlie's graves, in front of Luke's. A small tombstone sat with the epitaph reading little.
Baby Jackson
3 months of age
Child of Perseus and
Annabeth Jackson
Annabeth choked a sob. Seeing the space where her baby laid six-feet-under was too much of a realization. Then it being next to all of the deceased that she'd known made it worse.
All in a second, she got vivid flashbacks of every person's grave she could see from where she stood. She saw Silena laying in the streets of New York, drakon poison over her abdomen. The last time she spoke to Beckendorf, Percy coming back without him. Her younger brother, Adrian, who she'd promised would be okay on his first quest when he never came back. Luke finding her on the streets with Thalia, then him stabbing himself with her own blade. Her finding out she was pregnant again, to the blood that stained her sheets.
Annabeth collapsed on the ground, Percy grabbing her before she could hit too hard. She cried her eyes out, hovering over their baby's grave. Percy sat down next to her and pulled her into his lap (he'd been having to do a lot of that). How he'd managed to keep it together, Annabeth didn't know. Hades she'd been a wreck for the past week or so.
A wind blew in from all directions for a small second. Annabeth coughed and looked up to see what it was. Further down in the cemetery, stood someone else. That person started to walk towards them. They stopped about 10 feet away.
The second she saw Hera standing in front of her she wanted to kill the woman. Annabeth stood up quickly. "What in the name of Tartarus are you doing here? What more could you possibly want from me?" she demanded.
"Bold words for you to say, considering how much that place scares you," Hera reminded. "I'm supposed to come here to apologize, it is part of my punishment for..." Hera gestured up and down Annabeth and to the grave in between them.
"Get out," Percy jabbed from behind her.
"Believe me I'd be more than happy," Hera stared heavenward. "But they are watching me."
"Then get on with it," Annabeth spat.
Hera cocked her head. "But why should I?"
Annabeth couldn't take it. She reacted before Percy could stop her. She promptly walked up to Hera and smacked her across the face. Hera held the side of her face, but didn't look surprised.
"You killed my child!" Annabeth yelled. "They're dead because your arrogant, self-absorbed self can't take mortals having a better family than you!"
Hera grabbed her staff and pointed it at Annabeth. "I'd be quiet if I were you."
Percy grabbed Annabeth and pulled her back a few steps. He leaned down into her ear, "It's not worth it, Annabeth. Unless you want to end up in the ground too then go for it, but many people would appreciate it if you didn't."
Annabeth tensed but backed away slowly. Hera laughed, "Even he knows better."
Annabeth drew her dagger from the folds of her dress. Without breaking eye contact, she spit on Hera's feet. "Get. Out."
"Why should I?"
"You murdered our baby! They're dead because of you! I'm never going to be able to see them, because of you!" she screamed. By now, many people had turned to see what the noise was about. No one dared get close, just awing from a distance. Annabeth couldn't care less.
Before she could say anything else, Hera left in a column on fire.
~~~~~
Percy told Annabeth he was going for a swim. Annabeth didn't mind, he needed to clear his mind. She walked back into the house, kicking off her shoes. To her surprise, Athena sat on her couch.
"Hello, Annabeth," Athena greeted.
"Hi," Annabeth said flatly.
Athena sighed and stood up. She walked over to Annabeth and hugged her lightly. Annabeth just let her. "I'm sorry about your child."
Annabeth exhaled, "it is what it is."
Athena pulled backward slightly, staring down at Annabeth. She carefully pulled out the pins that held back her dark veil. She took it off of her and folded it neatly, setting it on the counter with the pins on top. Annabeth felt very relaxed by it. "It will be okay dear."
Annabeth nodded slowly. She was too deprived of energy to say much.
Athena smiled at her. "Sleep, you have had an eventful day. You still have more to come your way in the future. And while your baby is no longer here, you will have much new life to bring. There will be many new opportunities for you that you've always wanted, do you understand?"
Annabeth nodded again. "Yes, mother."
"Okay. Now go to bed."
Annabeth trudged up the stairs slowly, still processing what her mother had said. The words and idea of new life was not the most pleasant thing to think of at that moment. Nevertheless, she jumped into bed and fell asleep, holding onto her mother's words of wisdom.
