Annabeth's POV:
Annabeth stood with Percy outside of her dad's house. They didn't plan on being here all day, and she didn't want to be there that long too. Annabeth held Luke in her arms and had a small backpack on. Percy carried Silena, who was in a bassinet, and also had a small backpack. They didn't bring both bassinets because she didn't feel like carrying too much with them. Percy also was very nervous when it came to her picking up heavy things. He let her carry the twins and a bassinet, that was it. Will had told her not to pick up heavy things, but she thought she was fine.
Percy knocked on the door for her. She had called her dad and let him know that they were coming in advance, but she didn't think it would make much of a difference if she had called or not. Frederick Chase opened the door a few moments later.
He looked the same as he always had. Sandy blonde hair with dark brown eyes. He had his glasses on, probably because he was in the middle of something. He smiled at his daughter.
"Hello, Annabeth, Percy," he greeted.
"Hi, Dad," Annabeth returned.
"Hello, sir," Percy said.
Frederick smiled again. "Come in."
They stepped through the door and Annabeth took in her surroundings. She hadn't been here in a while. It smelled clean, but in a very polished wood and furniture way. From what she could tell from the foyer, the place had been redone.
Annabeth hugged her dad for a minute. She hadn't realized how long it had been since she had last seen him. She thought back, trying to remember. Had she really not seen him since her wedding?
All at once it hit her harder than that brick hit Jason. She finally understood why Percy wanted her to come here and see her family. For the last 5 ish years, she had almost replaced her side of the family with Sally, Paul, and Estelle. Sure she loved them dearly, but she had, in a way, abandoned her own people. To be fair, it's not like they made more of an effort to see her, but she couldn't help but feel guilty.
"I missed you, Anna Elizabeth," he whispered in her ear.
She almost started crying at that. Her given name was Anna Elizabeth, but always went by Annabeth as a nickname. After she got to camp, her name was Annabeth and that was so. After she married Percy, she legally changed her name to Annabeth Jackson. Her dad when she was younger always called her by her full name. That was one of the few good memories she had with him.
"I missed you too, dad," she mumbled.
Frederick stuck his hand out to Percy, which he took in a firm handshake.
"How are you, Percy?" he asked.
"I'm good Dr. Chase, yourself?"
"Well."
Annabeth smiled and looked between them. She stared at her dad for a little longer until he looked back at her. She grinned and glanced back at Percy as if to say isn't he great!
They walked into the living room together and sat down on the couch. Her dad looked down at the baby in her arms. He glanced back up at her, down at the baby, and back up at her. A silent question she understood. She passed her son to her father.
"What is his name?" Frederick questioned.
"Luke, Luke Charles Jackson," she answered.
He stared at his grandson for a little while longer. Luke just stared back up at him, sucking his thumb. He was the easier baby, his sister inherited the sass.
"Well aren't you cute," he stated. "If I say so myself, you look like me."
Annabeth hadn't thought about that one. She had gotten a lot of he's the perfect mix from people but she never thought that her son looked like her dad. When she looked between the two of them, she realized he was right.
"I haven't thought of it that way," she admitted, "but I see it now."
Frederick looked over to Percy, who held Silena. They exchanged babies so he now held his granddaughter. Annabeth silently thanked the gods that she was asleep, because she would probably start crying. Silena was the problem child. She had nightmares and separation anxiety, and she had an ear infection. Annabeth still loved her all the more of course, but it still was sad to watch.
"Now you," Frederick said, "look like your father."
Silena just shifted and squirmed before falling back asleep.
"Where are Mathew and Bobby," Annabeth asked.
"I think they are-" he was interrupted by a loud band from upstairs. "There they are."
Her step brothers came barreling down the stairs. They were 16 now and had grown a lot. Both of them were taller and looked older. She knew they didn't act older though. Annabeth always tried to be nice to them for her dad's sake, but she didn't like them. Everything they ever did as babies got blamed on her by her stepmom.
The two of them stopped at the end of the stairs and stared at the 5 of them.
"Hey, Annie," Mathew said. "Brought your boyfriend back?"
Annabeth rolled her eyes. "Husband. I've been married for almost 2 years now, you were at my wedding."
"Same thing," he shrugged.
Bobby spoke next, "Who's kids dad? Did you find them on the porch again, that's what, number 2 and 3 for you?"
Annabeth resisted the urge to stab them both. Percy put a hand on her shoulder with small force, he was probably worried she would stab them.
"They are my kids," Annabeth said through her teeth.
"When did you get knocked up?" Bobby asked, Mathew laughed next to him.
"Boys," Frederick stated, "be nice. You haven't seen your sister in almost 2 years."
They flopped down in chairs across from the couch. Percy rubbed circles on her back, trying to keep her calm.
"I've called dad more than once in the last 9 months and you were in the background, considering how much you two eavesdrop I'm surprised you didn't pick up the context clues," she sneered.
"I wasn't paying attention," Mathew shrugged.
"Can I hold one at least?" Bobby tried.
"No," she jabbed.
Frederick turned to her, "Annabeth-"
"Do you actually trust them to hold an infant?"
Her father blinked. "Actually, no."
"See, I was right. Also, where's Helen?" Annabeth asked.
"She's getting lunch with a friend, she should be home soon," Frederick responded.
Dang it.
"Anyways," Mathew grinned, standing up. "I have to go get ready, I have a date."
Annabeth stared at him, "You have a date?"
"He's got a girlfriend," Bobby whistled.
"Holy Hera I didn't think we'd see the day," she murmured.
"What?" Mathew asked.
"Nothing," she said, putting on a fake, sweet smile.
Both of them sprinted upstairs.
"Well, good for him," Percy concluded.
"She's nice," Frederick started, "her name is Macy, she's also 16, and they go to school together. I like her a lot."
Yet it took you so long to approve of my man, she thought, but stayed silent.
"You know you never told me her name," her dad said, gesturing to the baby in his arms.
"Silena Zoë Jackson," Annabeth answered proudly.
"Sweet name for a sweet baby," he decided.
The three of them carried small talk together for a little while longer. Her dad was the same, focusing on work. She didn't think that he would ever change from that. They were interrupted by a soft cry coming from Silena.
Annabeth picked her up from her father and rocked her softly. She figured that being a baby waking up in someone else's arms aside from mommy or daddy would scare her too. Annabeth dug through her bag and pulled out a small pink pacifier for her. She placed it in Silena's mouth and she calmed down instantly.
Just then, the front door swung open. Helen walked through with her Christian Dior bag and Louboutin shoes. Almighty Athena I'm going to have a stroke, Annabeth thought.
"Frederick, I'm back- oh, we have visitors."
Helen walked into the living room and stood in front of them, and stuck her hand out to Percy. Him being the polite well-mannered gentleman that Sally Jackson raised, Percy stood up and shook her hand.
"Hi, Percy," she smiled. Annabeth was surprised she still could smile after all the botox she had injected into her face. "I haven't seen you in a while."
"Good to see you again, ma'am," Percy greeted.
Annabeth stayed sitting. Helen turned to her, the smile disappeared from her face, and was replaced with a scowl. "Hello, Annabeth," she spat, sitting down in a chair.
"Hi."
Her stepmom looked at Silena and Luke. "Are they yours?" she asked.
"Yes, they are," Annabeth answered carefully.
Helen scoffed, "Surely you're too young to have children, I assume it must have been a mistake, am I wrong?"
"I'm married and it's not your business, nor does it affect you," she snapped.
"You would be correct, it doesn't affect me. If we are being honest here, I forgot you were even pregnant. I never was told by your father they were here, hell I wasn't told you were expecting. I overheard the conversation you two had about it. Your father, however, didn't tell anyone that he was going to have grandchildren," Helen finished.
Annabeth turned back to her dad. "Is that true?"
Frederick looked at the ground and didn't say anything. Annabeth's heart sank. She knew he didn't care much for her, but for something so important, you would think that he would at least tell his wife.
But he didn't. He looked back up to Annabeth like a deer in headlights. Frederick spoke softly to her. "Annabeth..." he reached out to touch Silena but Annabeth scooted away.
"Don't touch her," she demanded, "you didn't tell anybody?"
"Honey, I was busy and-"
"With what, work? That's all you do anyways. Or were you too ashamed by me to tell people that you were expecting grandchildren?"
Frederick put his head in his hands and sighed. "Annabeth time flew by and we haven't even seen that many people lately," he said, trying to defend himself.
"Right, so when you go to the country club every weekend you don't see that many people? Just admit it, Frederick, you're too embarrassed of me to even think about me. Or maybe you were too scared that people might think Mathew or Bobby got a girl pregnant, because all of your friends don't even know you have an adult daughter. You know the average human would be excited about something like this, but you were too holed up in your work and pride to remember me."
"Annabeth, I'm your father, call me dad," he choked.
Annabeth stood up and stared down at him. "If I'm not your daughter, you aren't my father. Now goodbye, Dr. Chase."

Percy's POV:
Annabeth didn't say anything the entire way back to Camp Jupiter. But the second she got into the hotel room, she collapsed on the floor crying. Percy felt awful about it too. Had her stepmom not showed up everything would probably have been fine. But she did. He was just trying to get her to see her dad again and be on a good note, but it went so wrong. Percy knew that she wouldn't blame him for what happened, but he still felt sick about it.
He set Luke down in the bassinet and sat next to Annabeth. She just curled into a ball squeezing Silena tight. Percy carefully pried his sweet baby out of her grasp, and set her in with Luke. He then took Annabeth and pulled her into his lap, hugging her tight. She cried for close to 20 minutes before being able to speak.
"I-I fai-iled-d h-him, P-perc-cy," she gasped and stuttered.
"Shh no, Wise Girl, you didn't fail him. Sometimes people just have different... standards and priorities," he soothed. Percy grabbed a water bottle from their bag and handed it to her. She chugged the whole thing quickly. Percy just held her and stroked her hair. His shirt was now soaked with her tears, but he couldn't care less. He waited until her sobs turned to cries to sniffles. He could tell she was tired by the way she blinked slowly and how she was having trouble staying upright.
"You should take a nap," Percy suggested. She didn't argue with him, just stayed quiet. He took off her shoes and helped her change into a sweatshirt and shorts. It didn't take long after that for her to be passed out in the bed.
Percy sighed and put his head in his hands. Why did their lives have to be so dysfunctional? He sat up and picked up Luke. He did in a way look like his father-in-law. Percy winced thinking that every time from now on, his wife wouldn't be able to look at their son without being reminded of her father. She didn't deserve that. Percy had always tried his best to give her the life she wanted, but he always felt like it wasn't enough. He didn't want to fail her, not after her past, and not after today. Percy knew that she would disagree with him in a heartbeat, but he just felt like he was adding to her problems. They didn't have a lot of money, they still had monsters coming after them, and they still had family problems.
And Luke... his precious, innocent son. He wasn't even a month old and was the softest, most unproblematic, perfect child he could have asked for. He didn't deserve to be a cursed reminder of their problems.
He sat in a chair next to the window. Luke was in his usual state, staring and sucking his thumb. Percy stared back into his matching sea green eyes. He only hoped that he could give his children a better start than what he had. He knew that bar wasn't hard to pass, but he didn't want his kids growing up off of fear for the world they were born into.
Percy didn't realize he was crying till a tear hit Luke's face. He looked surprised, but didn't move or scream. "I'm so sorry, baby," Percy whispered to his son. "I'm trying my best and I know it will never be good enough but I hope you can grow to forgive me for it."
Luke turned his head as if to be confused. He reached his tiny hand up to his dad. Percy smiled and gave one of his fingers to Luke. He wrapped his fingers around it and played with it.
"You are smart like momma, aren't you?" Percy remarked.
Luke just continued to play with Percy's hand. He hadn't realized how long he had been sitting there. He looked out the window and saw fewer people out in the streets. The sun was setting behind the Berkeley Hills. Annabeth stirred from the bed.
Percy set Luke back down with his sister and sat on the other side of the bed next to Annabeth. She blinked her eyes open to him and stared at him for a second before sitting up next to him.
"Sleep well?" he asked her.
She nodded and rubbed her eyes. They just enjoyed the quiet for a moment longer before Annabeth spoke.
"I don't want our kids around them."
Percy sighed, "If you deem that to be best, we can do that."
"It's just," she started, "when Sally found out that I was pregnant she had let the entire apartment complex know about it in less than 24 hours. She didn't judge or ask snarky questions, she was just happy for us. She had called us for updates and had every ultrasound picture given to her up on the fridge. My fath- Frederick, didn't tell one person because he was embarrassed by me. I didn't expect much from him but I didn't think he'd lie to my face. He would rather continue on with his life and act as if I never happened. But when I had hugged him and sat with him, it felt normal again. Like I was still a little girl on the couch with him watching old classic romance movies cuddled up under a blanket with buttery popcorn. And it took me until now to realize, that never meant anything to him. He was too busy getting it out of the way so he could send me to bed and go back to work. And the few good memories I had with him, I realize now they never meant anything."
Annabeth started sniffling again. Percy knew she didn't have the energy to cry, but internally was. He didn't have anything to say, so he just cuddled up to her. The phone rang more than once from across the room, but they were already asleep.

Frederick's POV:
Frederick Chase sat at his desk in his office trying to finish what he had planned for the day.
No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't concentrate for more than 5 minutes. He kept thinking back to what Annabeth had said to him and what he had done.
When he held his grandchildren, he felt so happy and warm inside. He didn't plan on bringing up what was brought up, but she knew the truth now. He had put his work before his child. A new emptiness filled him. It was similar to the one that came after she had run away. While he never made the effort, Annabeth had called him once every month or so, just to talk to him. He had never done the same for her.
While it hadn't hit him as hard after she ran away all those years ago, he felt like a failure. Frederick never tried to talk to her, or be excited for her. Heck, he had stayed silent about something so important to the both of them. He just didn't realize how important it was to him until it was too late.
He realized he might never see her again. He knew she didn't want to, that's for sure. He would never touch his daughter again, or see his grandchildren. He would never receive another phone call from her, just to make sure he was okay.
Frederick decided to call her just in case she had changed her mind. After a few tries, he realized it would be no use. She didn't pick up. He wouldn't even hear her voice again. The days of watching movies on the couch and the times she still called him 'daddy' or even just 'father', were gone. And he would never see them again.
