Of Second Chances...
Lt. Shikhawat, you have been a deserter, for almost 6 months now.
Do you want to say anything in your defence?
Raj : No sir.
Exactly like the last time, Raj was unable say a word in his defence. However, this time evryone else started to speak at once and chaos ensued, which forced the judge to say irritatedly :
If any one has anything to say, they can come up to the witness box to say it.
Just then, the court door opens, and Captain Salve enters.
I would like to say something, if the court permits.
I have the necessary clearance here, sir.
She was waving a document, which she handed over, to be given to the judge.
Raj is sitting there, unable to comprehend whats happening.
So is everyone else.
Everyone except three people.
Captain Salve : I had, if your honour remembers, acted as prosecutor, in the previous case against Captain...I mean...Lt. Shikhawat.
I had proved him to be unlawfully involved with his own cadet, in addition to his negligence in a very important case.
What is your point Captain Salve?
My point is, Sir, that I was wrong.
I had been provided with all the necessary knowledge and proofs, in the previous case, by the very same persons, who are the accused, in this case.
And thus, I can say, that there is a possibility, that Lt . Shikhawat was methodically framed.
I do not take any personal responsibility, as I was, I assure you, completely unaware of their intentions.
I am now.
With regards to this case, Sir, Captain..um..Lt Shikhawat, has only requested you, that if he be discharged, he be discharged with honour.
Yes, we have heard that. Do you have anything new to add, Captain Salve?
Sir, I do admit that Lt. Shikhawat has broken many laws, but, as Dr Martin Luther King once said, I submit that an individual who breaks a law that conscience tells him is unjust, and who willingly accepts the penalty of imprisonment in order to arouse the conscience of the community over its injustice, is in reality expressing the highest respect for law.
Lt. Shikhawat has been an absconder, by faking his death.
He has been charged with several counts of theft of official and confidential documents, including those from a red box.
He has also been charged with withholding of proofs, and several other charges.
I, however, implore the court, to look at the result, rather than the means this time.
His means may have been questionable, but his intentions were noble, and ....and the law..the law is reason.
It is reason free from passion.
I will thus request the court, to consider our plea, and to return to Lt. Shikhawat, all his medals and badges of honour previously taken from him, along with his rank, and readmit him to the Indian army, with honour,....and preferably an apology.
Everyone's mouth fell open, especially at the last line.
Did she really say that to the judge?
Did she really say all of that?
Captain Salve, at that moment, could feel that there wasn't a single eye in the courtroom, that wasn't on her.
She smirked dryly, as usual.
