Chapter 17

The seraphim forces arrived at the foothills of Lathrion by midday. Their tanks and artilleries placed up front. Standing behind those siege machines were the infantry.

The rebels were stationed up in the hills having the high ground. The crossbowmen had their bolts in place and their fingers at the trigger, ready to fire.

The seraphim commander came forth and shouted,"Behold you wretched rebels! We have come to know the location of your secret hideout which is now not so secret anymore!" He gestured with his hand and a few prisoners were brought forth.

"Here's what we're going to do!" He continued. "If you don't surrender, we'll execute them one by one, and if you still don't surrender by the death of the last prisoner, then we'll proceed to kill you until there is none of you wretches left!" He paused. "So what's your decision?"

No one said a word. Nothing from the prisoners, nor the rebels on the mountain. Just complete silence.

"Fine then!" He gestured with his hand once more and the riflemen pointed their guns behind the prisoners' heads. "Fire!" The loud bangs of the rifles filled the air as the rebels' dead bodies fell to the ground.

"Bring in the next batch!"

Pandora along with another group of rebels were brought forth, being forced to stand in front of the same firing squad. "Ready!" The squad aimed their rifles awaiting the kill order.

"Sir!" A private came running to the commander at the front before he could give the order to execute. "There's trouble in the rear."

The prisoners and the firing squad looked at the private. What was going on? The soldiers looked back and they saw a small group of men fighting in their flanks. They were too busy watching when out of nowhere a green meteor struck the centre of the formation, scattering bodies here and there. Their eyes flew to the sky and saw dozens of winged demons flying above them.

Pandora knew that her executioner was distracted. Through her rope-bound hands she grabbed the barrel and pulled hard while her foot kicked him causing the rifle to slip out of his grip. She positioned her finger on the trigger and pulled it.

The bang alerted the other executioners who responded by pointing their rifles at her. The other rebels managed to do what Pandora just pulled off. They grabbed hold of the rifle and fired it at the executioners, turning them into the executed.

A war cry was heard coming from the hills. The rebels abandoned their station and joined the battle, crushing the front lines with swords, spears and other sorts of weapons they possess.

A small horde of demons also joined the battle charging from Lathmere forest. Ferdinand and the sisters watched from the distance as the armies clashed onto each other. Ferdinand quickly joined the fray, telling the rebels that the demons are their allies. He just had to make sure they don't blunder and start attacking them.

The battle ended before sunset. The few remaining seraphim managed to retreat, being scattered in all four directions. The humans and their demon allies claimed victory. Losses from their side weren't too big neither was it too small. They took the injured into the base, reluctantly bringing the demons along as a form of gratitude for their assistance.

At dinner time, Ferdinand sat together with Pandora telling her of how he got managed to get help. He looked at Haphiri and saw her flirting with another boy, making him feel secure for the night.

One of the rebels gave a speech thanking the demons for their assistance before everybody dismissed into their quarters.
