Chapter 15

As Ferdinand scurried to the forest a squad of angels chased after him. He climbed up a tree and squatted down on the tree branch making sure to maintain his balance.

He could see the angels on the ground searching for him. Up above, there were those who were flying to get a bird's eye view. Ferdinand turned himself invisible and waited until they were scarce enough for him to take them down one at a time and only then did he come down.

He walked through the woods obviously knowing he's lost, but kept going anyways. He was walking peacefully when suddenly he had the sharpest feeling that he's being watched. He froze in his tracks. On a tree bark was a creature unlike anything he's ever seen.

It was grey all over save for its bright, red eyes. Its long, curved claws grasping of the tree branch it was on. Upon making eye contact with Ferdinand, the creature leapt from its position and spread out its four limbs revealing a humanoid form with an extra stretch of skin that connected its arms to its legs. The creature glided down and landed on top of Ferdinand.

Ferdinand's heart pumped adrenaline all over his body. His instincts was set to fight instead of flight. He pulled a rock to his hand with magic and quickly hit the creature on its face. While it flinched, Ferdinand quickly slipped out from under it. He then nocked an arrow and pulled the bowstring, aiming for its head and released it to kill the creature.

Ferdinand sighed in relief. He narrowly escaped death. What was that creature? A demon? What could one be doing up in seraphim territories? Ferdinand hurried to move, having an arrow nocked at all times shall any danger approach. If any threat arises, all he had to do was draw the bow, aim and fire.

His walking feet brought him to an entrance of cave not far from where he encountered the creature. He hesitated whether or not he should go in? Even after five minutes of trying to make up his mind, he only decided to sit in the mouth of the cave, not daring to venture into its depths. He felt his weary body slowly dragging his eyelids down to cover his sight.

"What do you think you're doing here?"

Ferdinand woke up. His eyes flew to see a young, dark-brown haired girl sitting on a supply cart that carried hay.

The girl got down from the cart she was sitting on and approached the tired Ferdinand. "Tell me, how would you rather die? With this?" She drew a dagger. "Or this?" She raised her free hand and a green fire appeared floating on her palm.

Ferdinand notice that green fire. Only a demon can conjure something like that. He pointed at the fire, but he was too awestruck to say a word.

"Oh, you'd rather burn to death. Very well."

"Wait!" Ferdinand said before she could do anything. He conjured up green fire upon his hand, just as she did. The girl reacted with a gaping mouth. "Yeah, I can do that too."

The girl clenched her fist killing the flame and Ferdinand did the same. "You're a cambion, too? Never thought I'd ever find one in this part of the world." Ferdinand didn't know what to answer her. "Come on." The girl ventured into the depths of the cave. Ferdinand stayed where he was until the girl was some good distance away. "Come on."

Ferdinand followed the girl, igniting demon fire to light up his way. He could feel that the cave was descending downwards into the earth. Not too long of a walk from the entrance, they got to their destination.

Deep within the cave was a lair full of demons of all kind. He looked to one side, a framed portal to and from the Underworld can be seen on of the cave walls. There were demons in full armor holding their weapons and those who work as blacksmiths making more weapons and armor. Ferdinand looked the other way and saw some humanoid demons feasting on the flesh of those lesser than them, eating their meat raw.

"Sisters," the girl said. "Look what I've found."

Sitting on some big rocks around the centre were two other girls, one was older and the other younger. They sat there as if on a throne.

Ferdinand stood awkwardly not really knowing what to say. "Hello." Even that came out awkward.

"Who are you?" The older girl asked.

Ferdinand remembered what her mother said about talking to strangers. In his mind were two conflicting thoughts, one told him to tell them his name, the other told him otherwise. All that thinking made him paralyzed.

"It's okay, just say it," the girl who brought him there said. She turned to her sisters. "This boy is another one of us. I found him just outside the cave. Just as I was about to kill him, he conjured up demon fire which convinced me otherwise."

Ferdinand still refused to speak and all of them were silent for a while until the older girl broke it. "I'm Aeziana."

"I'm Haphiri," the younger one said.

"Velmaia," the girl introduced herself. "And you are?"

The three had already given him their names, it would be rude not to tell them his. "Ferdinand."

The idea just came to Ferdinand's mind. He's in a cave full of demons, and his allies in the Rebellion needs all the help they can get to face the upcoming siege. And for the record, angels and demons are natural enemies. "Hey can you all help me?"

"Help you what?" Aeziana asked.

"You see, my friends in the Rebellion are in need of immediate assistance. An army of angels are marching towards our base in Lathrion as we speak. They're probably going to be slaughtered."

All three girls looked at each other. "I'll have to convene with my sisters," Aeziana said. The girls huddled together and started chatting in whispers so quiet that Ferdinand couldn't hear them.

He wandered around the cave looking at certain demons while passing through. If they made eye contact, he would immediately look away. He wandered into another chamber where there were lots of eggs that were the size of an ostrich, if not bigger. And in addition, there were also pink, ovaloid lumps of flesh with green dots that were lying around alongside them. Were those things eggs too?

"Hey."

Ferdinand looked over his shoulder. Velmaia was standing behind him. "We have come to a decision." The two of them returned to the rock where the other girls were sitting on.

"We have decided to help you," Aeziana said.

A fuse of hope was lit inside Ferdinand's heart. Perhaps he'll be able to help relieve the siege after all, and maybe even surprise Miranda, proving that he was right all along about taking it easy.

"But it won't come free," she continued. "We'll claim our reward afterwards."

The sisters began loading some eggs onto the cart, burying them beneath the pile of hay. Ferdinand saw what they were doing and started helping them. Once they're done, Haphiri sat up front taking the reins while the other three sat with their backs leaning against the hay.

Before they set off, Aeziana instructed the demons capable of flight to take more eggs over to Lathmere forest, south of Lathrion and wait for their arrival.

As they began their journey, Ferdinand sighed and closed his eyes. He just came to realize how tired he was. After failing to get a stay in Arkley as he originally intended, he finally got one now.
