Chapter Twenty-Six

A/N:

Hey Hootowls! I'm so sad (but also excited) because this is the last chapter of Of June. But I have decided that there will be a sequel. It will be called Alligator Sky, and it will come out soon.

So, please enjoy this new chapter. It might be long.

This starts about a week after the wake and funeral.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hadley's POV

I kneeled down in the damp grass, tracing the letters on the stone with my finger. It was chilly that morning, and being in the shade of trees wasn't helping.

From some reason, tears didn't come to my eyes. I had been working on the five stages of grief with Adam, and I felt that it was going better than I expected.

"I'm doing what you said, Dad." I whispered to the headstone. "I'm going to live with Bridget in Owatonna. I'm leaving Blue Lake. It's what she wants, and what Adam wants. But why do I feel so sad?"

Put those thoughts out of your head. Don't be sad.

I took a deep breath.

"Do you remember when we used to drive the boat around the lake? And I would always yell at you because you would drive with no hands? Or...do you remember the times where you would dance with me in the rain? We would get soaked, but you didn't care..." I rambled on and on.

I felt a hand on my shoulder, and warm brown eyes meet mine.

"Bridget's ready to go. Are you?" Adam asked, quietly.

"One more moment." I said. I leaned down and kissed the headstone. "Goodbye, Dad. I'll miss you." I whispered.

I got up, and took Adam's hand.

"Will you come with to say goodbye to Blue Lake one last time?" I asked him. He nodded. "Of course, Hadley."

So, that morning we went around Blue Lake, saying goodbye and doing things one last time. When I went by my Dad's work, Ray came out and gave me a hug.

"When you move away, don't forget about us, alright?" He said.

"I won't forget. I promise."

We went into the general store, because we got hungry, and too say goodbye. I was furious when I heard the whispered conversation between the owner and a customer.

"I heard that he was drunk when he hit the car."

"Oh, really? Stacy said that it was the other way around."

"That's crap. Everyone knows that Thomas was a complete drunk. Some say that he beat Hadley..."

I snapped. "You want to say that again?"

The owner and customer looked horrified. "Hadley, we were just..."

"My father was not a drunk."

If Adam wasn't there, I might have started busting some heads. I stormed out, and Adam came after me.

"Hadley, I'm so sorry."

"It's alright, Adam. I think I'm ready to go now." I said. I took his hand, and we hurried down the lone road of Blue Lake.

The house had sold quickly. An old couple wanted a small, practical cabin in the middle of nowhere. We sold my dad's car and boat, and we were all packed and ready to leave for Owatonna.

I laughed a little as I found something underneath my bed when I was packing. My Like List. I read all of it, smiling whenever Adam's name was mentioned.

I didn't realize that he was reading over my shoulder until he said, "You must have absolutely adored me."

I folded it up, blushing slightly. "Who says I don't now?"

He smiled.

"You were my birthday wish." I said, quietly.

"Then wishes really do come true." He sat down next to me. "Hadley, would you agree that this has been the best month of your life?"

I nodded. I wanted to say that he was the reason I was still alive during this month, because it was the truth.

I grabbed my backpack from the vacant living room, saying goodbye to the house one last time. I was heavy-hearted when I climbed into the car with Adam.

As we drove down the road away from the house, I blinked back tears from my eyes. I turned away from Adam.

"Hey," He said, lacing his fingers in mine. "Are you alright?"

"Yes," I lied. But then the tears began to fall down my cheeks. "No."

Adam grabbed a tissue from the glove compartment and handed it to me. "Thank you." I sniffled.

After a moment of silence, Adam said, "Hadley? Let me give you some words of wisdom. You shouldn't cry because it's gone; you should smile because it happened. I know it hurts, but you just have to look at life through the windshield, not the back window."

He gave my hand a gently squeeze. "Your father wouldn't want you to mourn his death. He would want you to celebrate his life. He wouldn't want you to be sad. I don't want you to be sad.

"Think about all of the amazing things that you're going to do with Bridget. I know you want to travel the world. You'll do that with her."

"What about you?"

"I'll be right next to you." He said. "I'll always be right next to you."

"But you're famous. You're going to be on tour soon and then you'll have to leave."

"I'm not leaving until I absolutely have to."

We were quiet in the car, and then we started to play games. We watched for different license plates, and punched each other whenever we saw a VMW Bug. We sang along to the songs on the radio for awhile too.

I really wished that this car ride could have lasted forever, but unfortunately it didn't. When we arrived in Owatonna, a smile played on Adam's face. He was happy here. I wished that I could have said the same thing.

We got older, and I should have known,

That I'd feel colder when I walked alone,

So I might as well ditch my dismay.

Circle me and the needle moves gracefully,

Back and forth, if my heart was a compass you'd be North,

Risk it all 'cause I'll catch you if you fall.

I looked at Adam when I said, "You're the sky that I fell through."

He gave my hand a gentle squeeze, which filled every part of my body with warmth.

"And if my heart was a house, you'd be home."

One month later

Bridget's house was big and beautiful, and it took me some time to get used to it. I had a large room, with a television and a computer. I asked her if I could re-paint the walls, and she reluctantly agreed. Adam helped me.

I wanted to draw a simple scene. A green meadow with a huge blue sky with a few puffy white clouds. A few flowers would dot the hills. It was something out of a dream, or an Owl City song. We had so much fun painting it.

It didn't truly matter what I did with Adam. For all I cared, we could just be sitting around doing nothing. As long as I was with him, it didn't matter. I would go through hell and back with him.

Once we finished the painting, we stood back and admired it, smiling.

"Do you want to sign it?" He asked. I nodded eagerly.

"You're signing it with me."

We took the thinnest brushes that Bridget had, and spelled out our names on the green grass. Then I got another idea.

I dipped my hand in the bucket of blue paint, and pressed it against the green wall, next to our names. Adam did the same with purple paint, overlapping my hand partially.

"Now we can hold each other's hands forever." He said, his eyes full of wonder at our masterpiece. That's what I loved so much about Adam. He saw everything wonderful in the world. Everything bright and beautiful.

I wished that I could see it that way. Blue Lake and my father was still a tough subject for me.

One day, Bridget had to go into work, which was awhile away. Adam offered to take me over to his house. He said he had a surprise.

"Is this a good surprise, or a bad surprise?" I asked him when we were in his car.

"A good one."

"Is it a person?"

"More like people."

I racked my brain thinking of who they could be.

"I really hope they didn't trash the place." He muttered. I smiled, and traced his hand with my index finger. He did the same to me, and I giggled.

When Adam opened the door to his house, he announced, "Hey, guys! I'm back! And I've brought a friend!"

Steve and Jasper tumbled into the landing, smiling and hugging Adam. Breanne came around the opposite way, and she waved to me with a shy smile.

This was the best surprise ever!

"I missed you so much, guys!" Adam exclaimed. He pulled me over to his side, because I had stepped out of the way to avoid being trampled by the guys. "This is Hadley. I met her in Blue Lake. Say hi."

"Hi." I said, a bit awkwardly.

"Hadley, do you mind if I talk to Breanne by myself? The guys can show you around, if you'd like."

"That's fine."

Steve raised his eyebrows. "Don't worry, Hadley. We'll watch you and Adam and Breanne can...catch up." The boys laughed and punched Adam in the shoulder as he blushed.

When they went downstairs, Steve grabbed my hand and tugged me along with them.

"What are we doing?" I asked.

"Listening to their conversation." Jasper said, while they pressed their ears against the door. I joined them.

"Isn't that wrong?"

"Hush."

"Don't 'hush' her! That's rude!"

"Be quiet!"

I listened intently to what they said.

"So, how did you meet Hadley?" She asked.

"It's a long story. We met on accident, really. We're practically inseperable." Adam said. Somehow I could tell that he was smiling. They were quiet for a moment, but then Breanne spoke, her voice soft and gentle.

"She means a lot to you, doesn't she?"

"Hadley...Hadley is my everything. I'm going to miss her so much when he leave for tour again."

I was his everything.

He was my everything too.

Jasper smiled at me. "I don't think Adam's ever said that about anyone." It made me smile bigger than I ever had.

Adam and Breanne said a few more things but we couldn't understand them. Then we heard Adam call up, "Are you guys listening?"

Jasper grabbed my hand when Steve shouted, "Run!" I laughed as they lead me around his home. I could see how Adam would be worried that they would destroy the house. We hid behind one of his couches when we heard them coming back up the stairs.

Jasper jumped on Adam's back to surprise him. He screamed, and all of us laughed.

Once the boys settled down, we retired to the living room with their instruments and they practiced for awhile. They were mostly messing around, though. Out of nowhere, Adam stated that I could sing. All eyes were on me then.

Breanne looked excited that she wasn't the only female singer there. "Can you sing for us, Hadley?" She smiled at me, but her eyes kept wandering to Adam. I wondered if she liked him. But then I wondered if Adam still liked Bridget.

"Um, I don't know."

"Come on, Hadley!" Steve chided.

The boys started chanting 'Sing! Sing! Sing!' until Breanne calmed them down.

"What do you want to hear?" I asked. Many different answers were replied.

"Pick your own song." Adam suggested.

I bit my lip, racking my brain. But then I thought of one.

Affection, the gifted architect,

Is making a draft and beautiful design.

The options and possibilities,

Are endless when we connect and re-align.

The band in the room were smiling at me. Jasper began to strum his guitar to keep me on pitch, and I continued to sing.

Collections of books and documents,

Arise and parade around my cluttered desk,

Reworking the math and measurements,

Until I'm covinced these plans are picturesque,

Like mountains in the Midwest.

I loved the way this song moved. It flowed with its little quirks like river. It was smooth and gentle like a story being told. But I guess that's what most of Adam's songs were.

A city sparkles in the night,

How can it glow so bright?

The neighborhoods surround the soft florescent light,

Designer skyline, in my head,

Abstract but still well-read

You went from numbered lines to buildings overhead.

Owl City smiled as I finished their song.

"That was really good, Hadley." Jasper said.

"I think you gave Adam a run for his money there." Breanne teased. Adam just smiled.

And so I watched them practice for a few hours, which wasn't a bore. It was fun seeing Adam with his best friends, singing with his heart's content. He was just so sure of himself that this is were he was supposed to be. He was so happy that he had found his passion: music. I wished I knew what I was meant to do in life.

Then my heart took a tumble when Steve asked me about my parents. I looked down at the ground, and could feel Adam's eyes on me.

"Um, Steve, Hadley doesn't like to-" Adam began, but I interrupted him.

"My parents are dead."

All of them fell silent. Steve looked guitly.

"Hadley, I'm so sorry."

"It's fine. You didn't know."

Breanne touched my hand gently, trying to reassure me. I had tried my hardest to forget about Dad, but then the stinging memories collapsed on top of me again. And I had a feeling that I couldn't just wish it away like I did last time. Everyone was quiet, unsure of what to say.

Adam broke the silence by saying, "How about we take a short break?" The band murmured and dispersed. He came and sat down next to me.

"Are you alright, Hadley?" He asked, his eyes penetrating my soul.

"I'm a little sad."

"Do you want to talk about it?" Adam said.

Suddenly a flame of anger lit in my heart. "Is that all everyone wants to talk about? It's always 'Oh, Hadley, I'm so sorry,' or 'I wish there was something I could do for the poor thing.' I'm sick of their sympathy!" I snapped, making Adam recoil. When I saw the hurt expression on his face, I knew I had gone too far.

"Adam, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap at you."

"It's alright," He said, his face still fallen.

"No, it isn't. That wasn't right for me to say." I tried to catch his gaze. "You've done so much for me, and I shouldn't be so mean to you."

"You're not mean, Hadley. You're just frustrated." He said, running a hand through his messy brown hair. After a few moments of silence, the shy smile returned to his face. He turned to me, the light catching his brown eyes. "You want to see something cool?"

"Sure."

He took my hand and lead me down into his basement, which revealed a very high-tech recording studio. His MacBook was out on the table, and his screen-saver was sail-boats floating on a turquoise sea.

"Wow. So this is where the magic happens." I said, looking at all of the equipment.

I always believed that everyone had a purpose, or a magic, if you will. Adam did some pretty magical things. Adam's magic was his music. And it may sound cliche, but he's saved people with it.

"Yeah," He said, smiling. I could tell that he was glad to be back in his happy place. He showed me some of the equipment, but then Jasper yelled from the level up, "Are you two ready down there?"

"Not yet!" I replied.

That wasn't the answer he was expecting, so he just said, "Um, well, hurry up then!"

"Steve likes you." Adam said. He sat down in one of his chairs. "He didn't mean to say...you know."

"I could tell." A smile crept on my face.

"So," I scooted my chair closer to him, raising an eyebrow. "What's up with you and Breanne?"

"Nothing. We're just friends."

"Oh, really, now?"

"Really, now." He said. My eyes wandered over to a few of the pictures he had on his table. One of them was of the two of them. They looked like they were reading music together, and then one of the boys crept up and started snapping pictures of them. Adam held his hand out to keep his face from being captured in the picture, and Breanne laughed, her brown hair spilling over her shoulders.

"Look at you two. You're perfect."

"No, we're just friends, Hadley. Nothing more."

"But still my heart stops without you," I sang loudly. "There's something about you that makes me feel alive."

Adam clapped a hand on my mouth. He hushed me. "They can hear you!" I giggled into his hand.

"Are you ready yet?!" Jasper yelled.

"The master calls." I told him. He smirked.

"Let's go."

When Adam drove me home that night, I knew that something was going to happen. Just the atmosphere in the car told me everything.

As we climbed out of the car, Adam said, "Hadley, I need to tell you something."

I bit back the cry in my throat. "You're...you're leaving, aren't you?"

He nodded, looking down at the ground. "I'm going on tour for six months." He tried to reassure me, but it didn't work. "But I promise that it won't be as long as it seems..."

I practically jumped on him to hug him. The best month of my life is leaving me. I tried as hard as I could not to cry in front of him. I had done that so much. I couldn't do it again. That was the worst thing I could do. It would make him feel even worse.

"I...I'm going to miss you, Adam." I said,  into his shirt.

"I'm going to miss you too, Hadley. I promise that it won't be too long."

"Don't forget about me when you're gone."

"How could I forget about you?" He said. "I love you, Hadley."

"I love you too, Adam."

After another few moments of our goodbye, Adam finally let go. He tried to blink back the tears in his eyes. He whispered farewell, and then left, wiping his eyes.

I watched him drive off. As soon as he left out of my sight, I ran back inside the house, right past Bridget who was reading in the living room. She looked up as I stormed past.

"Hadley, are you alright?" Bridget asked, getting up and chasing me down. "Hadley!"

I yanked open my bedroom door and throw myself down on the bed. Burrowing myself in the covers, I thought about what Adam said. He was leaving Owatonna for six months. He said it wouldn't last so long.

But half a year felt like an eternity.

Before Bridget could even say anything, I spoke, tears stinging my eyes: "He's gone. He won't be coming back for a long time."

I was right.
