Magic is passed through the blood from generation to generation. It's why bloodlines have always been so important to magical society; merging bloodlines with those without any magical abilities dilutes the bloodline, making their magic weaker and weaker until, eventually, it's unusable. Aside from the rare case where firstborns are born, people with completely magical blood from nonmagical families, it's the only way to preserve the magic in the bloodline. They typically belong to covens - which are for all magical classes, not just witches - where they're taught how to control and use their magic by talented teachers.

The royal family, the Pomeroy Bloodline, has been purely witches as far back as anyone can remember. They're probably the oldest bloodline in the entirety of Manikus, very wealthy and very powerful. Eight years ago, however, tragedy struck; the queen and prince consort were killed in a terrible accident, leaving their four children behind.

Now that they're all of age, and Prince Cael is ready to assume the throne, a selection is being held for the four of them. This isn't the first selection the royal family has hosted; however, it is different from the rest. While in the past it was limited to pureblooded witches only, now any magical person of any class may participate, in an attempt to join the bloodlines and put an end to coven-on-coven violence and hate.

No one from outside the palace has been invited in since the queen and prince consort were killed. Now, after eight years, that's finally being changed; who knows what else will happen.
