Song-- Running After You// Matthew Mole

This song is so happy and melancholic at the same time :')

The entire breakfast, Hector and Diem were having a staring showdown. Avyanna tried to poke some information out of Kingsley, but he remained adamantly mum. It was infuriating how he refused to give any context and yet kept murdering Diem through his eyes.

After one last attempt, Ava finally realized that Kingsley was incorrigible and there was no point in wasting precious energy over his silly feud. She poked her food silently, for the first time in her life, her appetite dead. Hector would have made a snarky comment, probably on how she was pining for her 'lover back home', but he was... busy at the moment. Truth being, she did miss Bexley. Caught up in the whirlwind of changes, new places and things to do, she hadn't the time to give a second thought to what she'd left behind. Rather, who she'd left behind.

Leanna elbowed her side, nudging Avyanna out of her trance.

"What's wrong?" She asked.

Ava cocked an eyebrow, confused as to how Leanna read her so easily. "What do you mean?"

The blonde pointed her fork at Ava's almost-full plate, her food visibly pushed around.

Swallowing the bite she was working on, Leanna prodded her plate and spoke,

"I mean, you would've inhaled all this food in milliseconds. Is everything okay? You usually don't seem, erm, not hungry...? Sorry, I'm not good with words."

Ava giggled at Lea's awkwardness and took a bite of her food, just to prove that she was alright.

"It's nothing. I'm just- just not feeling very well." She lied.

Leanna seemed half-convinced but gave the topic up completely. Before Ava could resume nagging Hector or play shuffleboard with her peas, Esmeralda and another man dressed in similar robes entered , most likely another Royal Mage. Avyanna took little notice of the man as Esmeralda gestured for all of them to leave. One by one each of the chosen kids filtered out of the hall. Ava was about to leave when she glimpsed Kingsley out of the corner of her eye.

Snapping her fingers in front of his face, she shoved him a tad too violently, almost knocking him off his chair. Nevertheless, that got his attention. He winced and glared at her.

"Hate to break your little love fest, but we need to leave. Now. So quit drooling over Golden Boy over there and get off your arse!" Avyanna snapped.

"Shut up," Hector growled, pushing her aside.

Ava simply raised an eyebrow and followed him out, chuckling silently.

"I am so sorry!"

It felt like Bexley had said that to the hundredth person. People were giving him odd glances as he sprinted past the town to reach the Council hall before anyone else could. His legs were burning from the run but he wouldn't stop. He couldn't. Not when he when the stakes were this high.

Gerald told him that the Assassins were finally in a secure place and it was safe to converse through a phone call. He had almost kissed the poor man out of joy. Now, as the wind whipped across his face, he couldn't help but smile so fully that his eyes crinkled.

'I'm finally going to hear her voice again... I'll know she's alright..'

The skies seemed to swell and wash over as tides do. Everything seemed to have more effect on Aillard, everything making him laugh. He jumped while sprinting, pumping his fist into the air.

He burst through the doors of the Council, not giving a second thought to the glances he was getting. He could look like a homeless leper for all he cared, but this was about Irvine, and for her, he'd run halfway through the country.

Phones were not a very common sight in Spiritfalls, usually, they were only handled by the Royals. A sleek, black-gold beauty that one was. Bexley, usually succumbing to his curiosity, held back from admiring the device. Rather, he glanced at a man standing by for permission. The grey-eyed man dialed a number with quick swishes of his finger and offered the receiving end to Bexley. He put it to his ear as he waited for a response from the other side.

After a minute of waiting, he heard her.

"Hello?"

Bexley inhaled sharply at the sound of her voice. He wanted to yell at her, tell her how much he missed her, but the feeling was so overwhelming that he had to close his eyes.

"Hello? Is anyone there?" She repeated. Afraid that the line would go dead, Bexley took a deep breath before replying shakily,

"You idiot..."

"Hey, Bexley." He could hear her smile from her voice. He bit his lower lip and looked up at the ceiling, refusing to let the tears fall.

"Avyanna..." He breathed out.

He could hear a sniffle on the other end and smiled softly.

"Not crying for me now, are you?" He joked, aware of how much his voice was trembling.

"I am so sorry Bex. I really am."

"Don't... don't apologize."

Avyanna let out a shaky breath. "Damn it, Bex. I never thought I'd say this, but I miss you. Really."

"You think a day goes by that I don't sense your absence? Ava, you took the life of the town away..." Bexley was trying hard not to start begging her to come back.

"Yeah, it's not the same without your sarcastic comments." She chuckled.

Bexley laughed a bit, feeling less hollower. But his smile started falling as he heard another voice in the background say, "What about me then?"

"Shut up Kingsley. You are so full of yourself!" Ava's voice muffled a bit as she addressed the eavesdropper. Aillard furrowed his brows as he questioned, "Who's that?"

"Erm, no one. You don't want-"

This was followed by a quiet scuffle and a multitude of whispers saying something along the lines of "Give it back to me, you big buffoon!"

"Hello? Is this Bexley?" A deep male voice spoke.

"That's Aillard for you. And yes, I am." Bex answered prissily.

"Oh, I've heard great things, Loverboy! Your gal is doing just fine out in the big bad world!"

Bexley was genuinely baffled at how freely this boy spoke to him. Loverboy? Great things? His gal? What sort of nonsense was that?

"Excuse me, but I would appreciate it if you hand the phone back to Ava." He said in his coldest voice possible, to show that he wasn't messing around.

Silence. Then a shuffle.

"Damn, your boy is really snooty." He could hear the so-called 'Kingsley' complain to Ava.

Another shuffle. Probably Ava snatching the phone out of his hand. He imagined Ava doing that and chuckled under his breath.

"I am so sorry about that, that was just Hector being the arse he is."

"It's fine. But tell him this, if he touches a single hair on your head, I will kill him."

"Oooh, I'm sure he's quaking in his boots right now. But that aside, how are you?"

Bex sighed, running a hand through his light brown hair, the tips of the strands curling around his fingers.

"It's hard, living like this. But it's not impossible, and there is always the hope of you returning in a whole piece." Avyanna chuckled and Bexley let her laugh penetrate his skull, let the sound imprint itself in his memory, lest he should never hear it again.

"I'm sorry, Bex, the others need to use the phone too..."

"Goodbye Irvine. And listen,"

"Yeah?"

"If you die, I'll kill you..."

She giggled and replied, "I promise,"

And then the line went dead.

But somehow, the piece of him that Ava had taken with herself, that piece had made its way back to his heart and fit snugly in the crack it had left. He broke out into a smile as he left the Council, her laugh still echoing in his ears.
