Unedited Chapter Four [1]

They were kissing in the boys' bathroom: the girl he left behind long ago, and the boy she still wanted after such a long time.

He'd do anything to get the taste of her out of his mouth.

       She felt exhilarated.

"Kat," he mumbled against her lips, his hands trying to gently push her away from him. All he wanted to do was pee and get back to Seth, not be violated by an ex-friend who was now in one of those 'totally bitchy' cliques in his school.

"Kat," he said a little more firmly. She nipped his lip, causing him to flinch, and moved away from him. The natural pink tint of her cheeks in the dull, green-ish light of the bathroom looked brighter than the fake blush she put on her face.

"Why did you kiss me?" He asked bluntly.

She looked at him in disbelief, as if her lip locking technique did not make him fall for her right away. "We were eleven years old when we first kissed, Nate, did you forget? I like you." She pressed her lips together, looking rather annoyed at him.

"Sorry, um, I just..." Nathan was lost for words. His first kiss (well, technically second) was just stolen from him. How was he going to explain this to Seth, who must be wondering about his whereabouts right now. He'd probably laugh and pat him on the back, but Nathan felt... disgusted.

"Never kissed a girl before?" Kat asked, seductively licking her lips and taking a step forward. Nathan responded by taking three steps back.

"No. I was going to say that I don't have feelings for you, and that kiss was totally uncalled for."

Nathan always made himself out to be the most blunt person out there, even if it made him come off as a complete jackass.

"What we did five years ago, that kiss, was childish. We were eleven, and we were playing house with your sister. You kissed me on the cheek, and so did I, just to please her. It meant nothing, Katherine," he continued.

He could see the hurt flash in her chocolate brown eyes, but it had to be done.

She leaned against the sink, her eyes to the floor. It was quiet. It was so quiet. Nathan took it as a chance to leave, because it was so awkward, and he didn't like awkward situations.

Once again, the music, laughter and talking were at high volume, and his eyes scanned the room, coming across his drinking friend, bobbing his head to the band on stage, and then towards the girl sitting by herself at the bar, pulling at her shirt skirt.
Instead of going to his table, he let his feet take him to the bar, stopping only a few inches away from her.

"Um, a beer for my friend over there," Nathan told the bartender, pointing towards Seth. He looked at Nathan weirdly, but when he saw Seth nod, he turned around to get him one.

"What are you doing here?" he turned and asked Bree. He caught her by surprise, because she almost dropped her nowhere empty bottle. He continued to question her, as if he had the right to. "Why are you here with him? And you're too young to be drinking."

He took the bottle from her hand and semi-slammed it down on the bar, making her flinch.

"He's my boyfriend," she says quietly. Not at all the loud, bold Bree Pasko at school. "What about you?" Now she's trying to fake it.

"I always come here. I don't drink, though." He collected the beer and paid the bartender. "You shouldn't be here." He turned to leave, but felt her hand clutch the back of his shirt. When he turned to face her again, she let go and bowed her head down in embarrassment.

What is up with this girl? He thought to himself.

"Thank you... for my folder today. I was panicking a little," she said quietly.

"Oh, really?" He scoffed. He didn't mean to come off as mean, but when looked away, frowning a little. She didn't look good, frowning. "You're welcome," he said, showing her a weak smile. He had to force the corners of his mouth to turn up.

"And..." She chewed on her lip, slowly turning her eyes up at him. "I'm sorry about my friends earlier today... they get kinda crazy when they see a cute guy..." she chuckled quietly to herself.

This wasn't the girl that was laughing obnoxiously with her friends at lunch today. This wasn't the girl that was muttering smut into her bad boy boyfriend's ear just a few minutes ago; she was different, she was quieter and less loud and annoying; she was much nicer, and Nathan found himself chuckling to himself as well.

"Neil is gonna be back soon," she said, sounding a bit afraid. Nathan took that as his cue to get back to his almost drunk friend with his almost warm beer, but before he could leave her again, she touched his elbow, and said (more like asked), "Don't be a stranger?"

Nathan shrugged and watched her smile widen.

       "What's your name?" She asked.

       "Nathan," he answered.

The bottle was slowly slipping out of his sweaty hands. He'd never spoken this long to a girl (or anyone, besides Seth) before in a long time. It felt good to communicate with someone his age, though, although he wasn't sure if awkward eye contact, quiet chuckling and smiles were a proper means of communication.

       "Um, I have to go."

A simple "bye" or "see you later" would have done. Nathan lifted his hand to wave goodbye, but instead, it faltered and his fingers twitched weirdly, which set him on edge. Little spasms like that only ever happened when he was about to perform for someone; he was only talking to a (very attractive) girl.
He turned on his heel and strutted over to Seth, who was sitting there, grinning at him like an idiot. Before the blonde man could even utter a word, Nathan pushed the slightly warm bottle of beer over at him, seeing as he had already finished his last. Of course, Seth would have to give him back his money that he mindlessly spent only as an excuse to talk to a girl. Nathan knew the snarky comments were about to hit him straight in the face, so he braced himself.

"And you said you didn't know her," he chuckled. "Where's her boyfriend? Didn't scare him away, did you?" He had a lopsided grin plastered unto his face.

Nathan sighed and shook his head. "I came here to talk about music, not girls!"

"Come on! We've been talking about music for about... what... the past three years or something! Have you ever had a girlfriend?" Seth questioned, poking sticks at Nathan.

       "Have you?" He retorted.

Seth threw his head back and laughed. "Plenty!"

"I just... don't find that important right now," Nathan mumbled. He found himself mumbling a lot, lately. When Nathan turned ten, his father insisted on him going to a few family therapy sessions with him. He'd always get cranky and refuse, kicking and screaming for his father to let him stay in home.

What was the point of calling it family therapy when only one family member was attending?

Then, his father gave up on trying to get him to come along with him; Nathan stayed in his room, day and night, not breathing an ounce of air outside of the dark blue walls of his room. That was the start of something good, and something bad.

Seth stifled a laugh. Nathan looked up and glared at him. Sometimes, Seth, even though being a twenty six year old man, could act like such a child, sometimes.

"You have to live a little, man. I get that this is what you want to do until you get old and gray, and I know that you're doing one hell of a job in school—that takes dedication—but you need a break. You need to breathe, and right now, talking to people other than me sounds good. That girl over there," Nathan glanced over his shoulders to look at her, still sitting by herself, seemingly afraid of the people around her, "I think you like her, and I think you should go for it."
