Pizza Party (Owen x Ohio)
This takes place after the events in "The O Team" so if you need to watch or rewatch this episode to refresh your memory, feel free to do so.
"Here's the calzone, as we promised you." Owen says as he rolls up some of the pizza slices into a calzone as he promised Rivka.
Rivka takes the calzone, slipping one of the "calzones" underneath Baby Genius' blanket. Faint giggles can be heard, indicating that Baby Genius is enjoying the snack.
She bites into her own "calzone", her eyebrows raise in a pleasantly surprised arch. A half-smile appears on her face as she walks away with the stroller, holding the pizza with her free hand.
Snatching a pizza box from one of the tables, Owen and Ohio weave through the crowd of dancing agents, the disco lights casting a colorful glow as they pass the dance room.
It's clear the agents have taken the "pizza party" literally, throwing down a full-blown bash to celebrate their hard-earned solved cases.
Even though the party's in full swing, Owen and Ohio remain on duty, guarding headquarters.
Sure, missing out on the chill vibes and pizza munching is a bit of a downer, but working solo has been Owen's style until Ohio came along.
Despite Owen's protests to Ms. O that he was fine without a partner, she paired him up with Ohio anyway.
Owen was a bit annoyed at first, but overtime, he's gotten used to the idea, though they clearly had some disputes from time to time, though it was rare.
"Hey! I want that slice!" Owen suddenly pipes up, eyeing the piece of pizza with the perfect cheese-to-sauce ratio that Ohio is about to claim.
Okay, maybe they bickered a lot more than Owen cares to admit.
"Seriously?" Ohio rolls his eyes slightly.
He doesn't really see what's so special about the slice he had on his plate. To him, it was just like a regular ol' pizza slice.
"Come on, Ohio, you've gotta understand, that's like the most perfect pizza slice." Owen says with a dramatic flourish, snagging the cheesy triangle from Ohio's plate.
"It's not just a slice.. it's like the cheesiest, gooest slice. It's got that perfect cheese pull, the kind that you see in commercials but never in real life, ya know? And the crust is just crispy enough to be the ideal cheesy-to-crunchy ratio. It's a rare find in the wild world of party pizza!"
Ohio gives a playful smirk, not being able to help but crack a small chuckle, despite trying his best to keep that stoic demeanor he's used to having. "Alright, Picasso of Pizza, enjoy your masterpiece. Just remember, we've got a job to do."
Owen nods, a mock-serious expression on his face as he takes a bite. "Mission accepted. This slice will be thoroughly enjoyed, and security will be maintained. Balance in all things, right?"
Ohio's expression quickly shifts back to seriousness as his attention returns to the security screens.
As he scans through the different camera feeds, he catches a glimpse of tomato sauce dribbling down Owen's chin from the corner of his eye.
He's so tempted to wipe it off Owen's chin with his thumb, but he tears his gaze away from Owen's chin and refocuses on the cameras.
He's almost completely sure Owen already thinks he's odd for staring at his face so much earlier in the ice cream surveillance truck, so he doesn't want to make things any weirder.
Despite his best efforts, Ohio finds his gaze drifting back to Owen, until his eyes are locked on him, observing how the hazel-eyed boy's chin becomes smeared with tomato sauce as he reaches for another slice of pizza.
Ohio's attention lingers, and he can't help but notice the subtle sprinkle of freckles across Owen's nose. He also notices how long and curly Owen's eyelashes were, details he hadn't fully noticed before.
Suddenly, he notices a slight scrunching in Owen's eyebrows as he gazes off into the distance. Almost instantly, Ohio can tell that his co-worker is upset.
"Hey, everything okay?" Ohio asks, catching Owen off guard.
Deep down, Owen definitely didn't feel okay, but he was surprised by how Ohio always seemed to pick up on every little detail when it came to him and his body language.
"Yeah, why do you ask?" Owen replies.
"Well, I noticed you were blinking really fast," Ohio states. "You usually do that when you're not being completely honest. Is something bothering you?"
Owen tries to hide how stunned he is, but he can't help but be impressed.
Damn, he's good. He thinks.
He can't believe seems to read him so well in a way that not even Owen's closest friends in the squad can, and he's known them for years, unlike Ohio, who he has only known for a month.
Owen sighs.
"I just really miss my dad. He had to move provinces a few days ago for his new job." He says.
It feels odd to be so vulnerable and open for once... but he just wants to be honest to his partner. He's always been the kind of guy to fight his own battles, literal or mentally, but he admits it kinda felt good to open up.
Ohio puts his hand on Owen's shoulder.
"Sorry to hear that." His usually serious expression softens.
"It's alright man, he's just doing what he needs to do for the family you know?" Owen says, trying to shrug it off.
"Luckily, he'll be back in a few months, but I'm really gonna miss him." He admits.
Ohio gently squeezes his shoulder.
"If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here. I know we've kept things professional, but you're more than just a partner to me. You're my friend... my best friend."
Owen feels his heart begin to race.
As many friends as he had on Odd Squad, most of them felt more like acquaintances. None of them really understood him the way Ohio did.
It was always the same with the others-friendly conversations during work, but once the shift ended, so did the connection.
But it felt different with Ohio..so much more different.
Suddenly he understood the deep connections that were shared between Olympia and Otis and Olive and Otto.
He realizes that Ms O giving him a partner wasn't the bad idea he thought it was.
Through it he had made a confidée, someone who truly got him.
Ohio immediately picks up on Owen's nerves, noticing the slight flush on his cheeks, the way he shifts uncomfortably.
"You're blushing," Ohio says, his tone casual but knowing.
"Sh-shut up, I'm not," Owen stammers, though the heat rising to his face betrays him.
Ohio locks eyes with him, reading the emotions written in every subtle gesture. He can't take it anymore- the feelings he's been harboring for Owen are too strong to suppress.
In that moment, everything clicks. Ohio finally understands what he feels for the other boy.
"What-" Owen starts, but before he can finish, he gasps as Ohio's lips capture his.
Owen's eyes widen, his body stiff at first before he relaxes into the kiss.
He's never kissed anyone before, let alone another boy, but somehow this feels right...so right.
Ohio pulls away after a few more seconds.
"I'm sorry." He says.
"I've.... I've actually had a crush on you for a while now. Ever since we were partnered up. My partner before you..he was a jerk. I didn't really want a partner when I moved to this headquarters but... Now I realize.."
"I get it." Owen nods. "I felt the same way. I was so used to working solo I didn't know what to expect when Ms O gave me a partner, but it turns out that it's the best decision she's ever made for me. Because...I think I'm starting to feel the same way about you."
Ohio's smile widens, something out of character for him.
"How about we take a break? Let's let ourselves enjoy the party."
Owen can almost not believe the words coming out of Ohio's mouth.
"Really?"
"Just this once."
Ohio smiles as he takes Owen's hand.
I was inspired to write this oneshot cause these days, I've been re-watching some Odd Squad episodes again on PBS Kids. One of the episodes was "The O Team", and as I watched it, I couldn't help but look at these two and think about how they'd make a potential ship to write about. I mean... The way Ohio would pick up on Owen's body language, his chin, and eyebrows to the point Owen literally told him to stop focusing on his chin and more on the mission?! If that's not giving fruity, Idk what is LMAO. I high-key ship them now!
