Best birthday ever (Orchid x Otis)
It was a normal day in Odd Squad...well as normal as it can get.
Everyone was solving cases like they usually did.
Orchid was in her desk, trying to finish her paperwork but she found herself getting lost into daydreams. Recently, it's started becoming a more noticeable thing. This was definitely not left unnoticed by her partner Ohlm.
"Orchid?" Ohlm tried to get his partner's attention by waving a hand in front of her.
"Orchid!" Ohlm repeated and clapped his hands together, that managed to startle Orchid back to reality.
"What is it Sherman?" Orchid groaned, snapping out of her thoughts.
"It's just that... this is the second time this happens to you. What's going on?"
"Nothing!" Orchid mumbled.
Truth was that Orchid couldn't seem to stop thinking about Otis. She didn't know why, but ever since Otis has helped her and Ohlm stay at Odd Squad, she enjoyed reliving her memories with the blonde.
That included her older memories as well, like the time she pranked Otis with the glitter jar. The time they worked together to film the Odd Squad commercial. The time she shoved a finger at his lips when he insisted on helping them.
Those soft.. lips.
Did I just call his lips soft? Gross.
She looks down at her paperwork, trying to push her thoughts away from the blonde.
But no matter how hard she tried to push them away, they always managed to crawl their way back, and sometimes she didn't even realize it. She didn't realize that sometimes she'd be so lost in her thoughts that she'd forget about her physical world.
"Are you sure?" Ohlm asked Orchid, but before Orchid could respond Ms O barged in.
"Agents, I have a case for you." Ms O had them follow her upstairs.
"Well?" Ohlm asked Orchid as they followed close behind, not forgetting what he asked.
"Yep. Now come on Sherman we gotta case to solve." Orchid said to the other brunette, deciding that solving cases might help her take her mind off of Otis. She grabbed Ohlm's sleeve as they zoomed up the stairs with Ms O.
She and Ohlm had to solve the next place Jamie Jam would hit and stop her before she could jam one of the neighborhoods.
As Ohlm and Orchid rushed downstairs to go to the tube room, she bumped into Otis, who was reading the newspaper and not watching where he was going.
"Oof!" Orchid exclaimed as she and Otis collided, sending each other straight to the floor.
"Orchid! I'm so sorry! Are you okay?" asked a concerned Otis, standing up and offering his hand to Orchid.
"I'm fine, obviously.. I'm Orchid." Orchid sassed, rejecting his help and she stood up on her own.
She turned her back at him and walked away.
"C'mon Sherman." Orchid told Ohlm.
As they walked away, Otis looked at Orchid in confusion. He couldn't help be feel like she almost seemed to be purposely avoid him.
"Did I do something wrong?" Otis wondered.
"Why were you so mean to Otis?" Ohlm asked while they were searching for Jamie Jam.
"I didn't need help."
"But you didn't need to snap at him that way." Ohlm commented, honestly confused at Orchid's unnecessarily rudeness towards Otis.
"Jamie Jam hit 4 oak street." Orchid began, ignoring Ohlm.
Ohlm being his naive self, listened to her, forgetting about the argument they had not so even 5 seconds ago.
"Then she hit at 8 oak street." He added.
"If she hit 4 oak street, then 8 oak street, then the next place she's going to strike is...."
''12 oak street!" Ohlm and Orchid finished. They were right.
Later that day, Otis went to Orchid's desk.
"Hey Orchid."
"I'm sorry for making you fall. Are you upset with me? If you are I really didn't mean t-"
Orchid shoved a finger to his lips like last time.
"You don't need to apologize." Orchid began, surprising Otis with her soft tone.
"It was my fault. I'm sorry for being so rude.......Otis." Orchid finished off quietly, surprising Otis once more.
As Orchid gets up from her desk to turn in her paperwork, Otis' eyes widened. Orchid never really called anyone by their real names.
The next day, the agents were planning a surprise party for Orchid. It was Orchid's birthday, and she had no idea that her boss and coworkers actually knew about her birthday. She also had no idea about the surprise party they were going to throw for her.
Otis actually happened to be the one who told Ms O about it, since he secretly had Orchid's birthday written down on his calender.
Otis was sent to distract Orchid as Ms O and the rest set up her party. He took the tubes to Orchid's house, when he got there he knocked on her door, waiting patiently for her to open it. When she did his jaw dropped open as he looked at her. Orchid looked stunning.
Her hair in was hold in a beautiful bun and she had a beautiful sparkly red dress on. She had gloves to match her dress.
"Why are you dressed like that?" Otis asked, drawing his eyes away from her. He didn't want to blush or make himself look like an idiot.
"It looks ugly huh? My mom made me wear it because..... never mind." She stopped herself from finishing her sentence, not wanting to bother telling people about her birthday. Her mom forced her wear it for her birthday, since she wanted her daughter to look beautiful for a party they were going to throw for her today.
"No, of course it doesn't, you look beautiful." Otis shared, heat rushing to his face as he realized that he voiced his thoughts out loud.
Orchid couldn't help but blush as well, but not nearly as much as Otis though, who practically looked like a tomato.
Normally, she'd be the type of person to tease someone for it but today was different.
He's so cute when he gets embarrassed
She thought.
Why am I thinking this? Stop it Orchid.
She scolded herself.
"So...what are you doing here?" Orchid asked, trying to ignore that funny feeling she got in her stomach whenever she got nervous.
"You know it's Sunday right? There's no work today."
Otis nods.
"Just follow me."
Orchid eyes him suspiciously, but doesn't question him as she steps out of her house, following the blonde boy. She couldn't help but wonder where he was taking her.
A few minutes later, they arrived at a restaurant.
"Why are we here?" Orchid asked, sitting across from Otis. Why the heck was Otis taking her to a restaurant?
"I'd like spaghetti please." Otis ordered as soon as the waiter came, dismissing Orchid's question.
"Same here." Orchid told the waiter.
Oh heck it, now that they were here, might as well eat here.
After half an hour, they were done with their meals. Both were having a conversatiin until Otis' badge rang.
Otis excused hinself as he left the table to answer it.
"Hello?" He spoke through the badge after making sure he was a few feet away from Orchid's table.
"Otis we're ready." Olympia informed.
"Roger that." Otis nodded and hung up. He returned to the table.
"Ms O just called. She wants us to go to HQ."
Orchid raised her eyebrow.
"Why? We don't work on Sunday."
Otis just shrugs.
"Must be an emergency if she needs us."
"Great." Orchid answered sarcastically.
When they arrived she was confused by the dimmed lights.
"Where is everyone?" She wondered.
She was then surprised with a "Happy birthday!" from everyone.
Her eyes widened, but she smiled. "Thanks everyone."
"I can't believe you guys remembered my birthday!"
"It was all thanks to Otis." Ms O said.
"How did you even-" She had started to ask.
"There is no way I could ever forget your birthday, and let anyone else forget it." He admitted shyly.
She smirked."Thanks Sherman."
She took Otis's hand, taking him to a room that was emptier and more private.
"Once again, thanks."
"There's nothing to thank me for." Otis gave her a small smile.
"Of course there is! You made sure everyone remembered my birthday and even helped throw this amazing birthday party for me!"
She gave him a hug, surprising him but he returned it. Then, without thinking, she held his face and brought it to hers then kissed him.
He didn't kiss back, but didn't pull apart until a few seconds later.
"Orchid.. I don't think we should..."
"Why not?" Orchid demanded, her hands on her hips.
"Maybe we should wait a few years. I'm a little too old for you don't you-"
"We're both kids aren't we? So what's the problem?"
Otis looked down at the floor nervously. He didn't know how to respond to that, since she wasn't wrong.
''Now come on. Let's go back to the party." Orchid ordered, a huge smile plastered on her face.
Otis couldn't help but smile back, nodding. "Happy Birthday Orchid.''
"Thanks Otis." She says as she wraps her arm around his.
This was the best birthday ever.
