Chapter 4

"You, the black haired guy. 3 seconds late," Kakashi spoke, taking notes in his brain. "The pink girl and blonde kid, 15 seconds late. What were you guys doing taking so long? Kids your age shouldn't be making out in the hallways just yet."

Sakura flinched with a huge blush at her new sensei's words, Naruto giving the same reaction as well. What's wrong with this sensei to come up with these weird perverted assumptions? Well, maybe it was to be expected, Naruto supposed. He had recognized the book his sensei was holding as he walked into the classroom, after all. That thing wasn't exactly the closest thing he'd ever found to a bible before.

Besides, who was this sensei to say anything about them being late when he himself arrived 3 hours late to their team meeting? No right to talk to your students about being punctual when you're more of an issue yourself, hypocrite. Naruto silently betted to himself that the amount of time he'd been late for in his life added up together can't even beat his sensei's by a quarter.

"That was a joke, I am no pervert so don't worry," Kakashi assured upon receiving no words from the students he just teased. 'Lies,' Naruto accused in his head. "Why don't you all sit down? We can start with some introductions. After all, I have zero idea who you guys are."

That too, was a lie. Kakashi had thoroughly scanned through all of their files the day before. He had even gone to their houses to pay them a little visit earlier before he came to the academy, specifically when they weren't home. It's not a crime if the Hokage was doing the same with him, but inviting yourself over to a child's house didn't seem like a good thing to openly declare.

The three fresh Genins hesitantly sat on the stairs nearby the railings of the rooftop where Kakashi rested on, staring at their sensei each with curiosity sparkling in their eyes. They were the only ones here who really knew nothing about their new sensei.

"Sensei, how about you start first as an example? The three of us don't know you at all, after all," Sakura suggested. Kakashi hummed in approval and kept the book he had been holding in the pocket of his pants before clearing his throat.

"Alright then. My name is Kakashi Hatake.  I have no intention of telling you my likes and dislikes. As for my dreams..." Kakashi paused in the middle of his sentence, staring at his Genins' faces with amusement. They were all clearly unimpressed, though Naruto seemed to be trying to hide it with a smile for whatever reason. He searched through his brain for the next sentence to his introduction before deciding on a, of course, extremely creative one. "I have a few hobbies."

Sakura fought back the urge to let out a loud groan. Really, why did they get assigned a sensei that was so unserious about his job? This could put them in serious danger! What if they were on a mission and get ambushed, then they all die because this sensei wasn't responsible enough? Maybe she should file a complaint, then they might get another better sensei than this slob of a shinobi. He can't even introduce himself properly, and understanding each other as teammates is crucial to form a strong team!

"Next, you. The girl," Kakashi nodded at Sakura for her to begin her introduction. Calm, Sakura, you need to make a good first impression for your sensei, Sakura took a few breaths before plastering a smile onto her face.

"I'm Sakura Haruno! I enjoy reading, and I especially enjoy Kishimoto-sensei's works." Naruto beamed at that. No way, his teammate shared a favourite writer as him! Everything is going so smoothly, he was sure he and Sakura were going to become the best of friends already. "I dislike people who are late-" Kakashi held back a small chuckle. "-and my dream is to become a powerful kunoichi that will have my name carved into the brains of every single shinobi out there."

'Very ambitious, she already has the right mindset to become a shinobi. Seems to know the dangers of having people coming after you for your life every second too. She's serious about this, that's good,' Kakashi thought to himself with a small smile at the kunoichi in front of him. "Now, you. The guy with black hair."

"Hn," Sasuke responded as Kakashi's gaze landed on him. Just as Kakashi thought that would be his only response, Sasuke continued to speak. "The name's Sasuke Uchiha. There are many things which I hate, and there aren't many things that I like. Also, I have an ambition that I have no intention to leave as a mere dream." At this part, Kakashi gave a little sigh inside his head. Now this is gonna be something to deal with. "I will restore my clan to its glory....and kill a certain man."

Kakashi was a shinobi, not a therapist. In fact, he was pretty sure that he'd probably need a therapist for himself, if anything. But as a sensei, his job was not only to train Sasuke, but also to lead him away from the path of self destruction that is called revenge. He has had lots of experience in the world of shinobi, and he knew the thirst for vengeance never led to a happy ending. He didn't want any of his students to ever go through that. He had to change the last Uchiha in Konoha, somehow. "Last is you, blonde kid."

Naruto silently whined in his mind about him being the only one getting called 'kid' over and over again. Was he really that short? Last time he checked, he was pretty sure he was only a few centimeters shorter than Sakura... Either way, he'll make this introduction really, really quick. He didn't want to occupy that much of his teammates time, he already knew he was irrelevant as the background character in all their stories. Kakashi sensei was probably an amazing ninja at his prime too.

"My name is Naruto Uzumaki! I have a few hobbies, that including reading- I love Kishimoto sensei's books too!" Sakura beamed. "I also like watering plants, but all of them seem to die on me at some point. I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, but Mr. Ukki seems to be doing just fine. My favourite food is ramen, because it's really cheap but really delicious. I don't like it when my plants die, because it makes me kind of sad. I hope that one day my luck will help me with making more friends so that it's easier to live, like Kiba and Sakura," as he said that he suddenly froze. What if Sakura didn't consider him as a friend yet? "W-Wait, we're friends, right?"

"Yes, yes! Of course we are, Naruto," Sakura smiled at the blonde who beamed back at her before his face immediately paled. Ah!! Talk about making his introduction quick, he really just read out a whole essay on the spot! Are his teammates going to think he loves wasting his time? Oh no, Sakura might hate him. She seems to value her time by how she emphasized that she hates people who are late. Wait, then why does she want Naruto to hang out with her? So he's not irrelevant? The gears continued turning in Naruto's head, never to click.

While Naruto continued his endless train of thoughts within his head, Kakashi hummed in satisfaction at his students introduction. So, he has a strong willed kunoichi who seems to be pretty serious about her ambitions. The last Uchiha known by everyone and clearly wants vengeance for his clan. Not even god knows what he does in his free time other than training and thinking about all the revenge things. It was honestly terrifying and saddening to see for a child his age, but Kakashi knew that it would take something so tragic it was unimaginable, to finally stray him from the path of vengeance. He knew. He was the one who knew the most, and it hurt him to even imagine what would happen to Sasuke Uchiha.

As for Naruto...

Ah, his sensei's son. Seeing Naruto's enthusiasm sure brought back lots of memories from the past and not gonna lie, it made him hold back a few tears. He knew better than to cry on the first day of meeting his Genins, though. Naruto just reminded him so, so much of....

Well, setting the memories aside, Naruto seems to be a pretty hardworking kid, from the book piles and tons of empty pots he saw in his apartment. But it was evident that he wasn't very confident in himself. Perhaps this was the villagers' fault, everyone knows what they had been calling him since he was a newborn. Kakashi needed to make sure that Naruto would never believe that he isn't actually worthy of being treated right, but he may already be too late to that.

He could see bits of Kushina from Naruto's introduction, the way he rambled on about the littlest details that didn't matter that much. But to Kakashi, they were everything. He had never been more grateful that he was assigned to the team of his sensei's son. But overall, Naruto reminded Kakashi more of his late sensei for some reason. Maybe because he's usually so quiet, calm and composed. He deals with his matters in his own head but ends up messing it up like Kushina clumsily. Then he'd struggle to explain it 'like Kushina' before deciding to keep quiet instead 'Probably sensei'. Ahh, he sure was seeing every single bit of his sensei and his wife in Naruto.

"I really, really like you guys," Kakashi gave a sincere eye smile. You guys? He was really talking about Naruto when he said that. Hopefully he doesn't get too caught up in the fact that Naruto is his sensei's son and spoil him too much or favour him over his teammates. "Well, I'll meet you guys at the third training ground tomorrow, 6 am. We have a special final test, so don't be late!"

For the first time in a while, he contemplated whether or not he should try to get there on time that day. Hopefully, they won't decide to take revenge on him by being late 3 hours if that happens. Maybe he should stick to his usual 'being late as hell' and make it iconic. Then one day he'll surprise his cute little genins by arriving on time, and they'll be so happy that they do all the work for him..... but he'll probably slack off on their D-rank missions already.

His eyes moved up to stare at his cute little genins who stared back at him. He tilted his head in confusion. Why are they still here? He thought they'd be leaving by now. "What is it?"

"Kakashi sensei, what do you mean a special 'final' test? I thought the academy test was the final test?" Sakura questioned. Ah, of course. These cute little genins really thought two clones can make them qualified to become a full fledged genin? That's honestly child's play. He still didn't understand why civilians weren't trained to control their chakra as well in this world where shinobi are in constant battle and wars rise out of nowhere. He expected civilians to be the ones who brag about making two clones, not genins who are truly shinobi.

"Heh, no one told you guys yet, am I wrong?" Kakashi chuckled darkly in an attempt to scare the three genins. It proved to work on Naruto who gulped and Sakura who felt slightly intimidated. "You really think a few measly clones can get you to become an actual Genin? Oh please, you are still far from becoming an actual ninja. The expectations for shinobi's levels are really dropping by the day. Even people at High Chunin level get to become Jounin now."

"So, um, we're not actual genins yet?" Naruto asked in a small voice. He had expected something like this beforehand. Not saying that Sakura and Sasuke were weak like him, but really, WHO in their right minds would let someone as dumb as Naruto Uzumaki become a ninja? Probably just trying to kill him off from the surface of the Earth before anything else.

"That's right. The real test is tomorrow, where I will personally decide whether the three of you pass or not. You better be grateful you made a good first impression for today. But," Kakashi smiled beneath his mask, malice rising in his tone. "My advise- you better not eat anything for tomorrow. Or else...who knows what might happen!"

Naruto stopped himself from running away and resigning before he even got the job as a shinobi. No matter what, he was given a chance. Iruka trusted him, Iruka has faith in him. He can't fail Iruka sensei now. He has to try, at least. And if it's really too much, maybe he'll just give up. He didn't deserve any chances from the start, anyway.

"Well, that's all! Have a lovely day, and I'll see you tomorrow!" Kakashi eyed his cute little genins and finally disappeared in a blur upon coming to the conclusion that they had no questions left.

"Er....sounds stupid but," Naruto muttered, turning to his teammates. "Do you guys know where's the third training grounds?"

"Hn. Stupid," Sasuke grunted, resisting the urge to give him an eyeroll. How is this stupid Uzumaki an unofficial Genin? Everyone has been to the training grounds at least once in their lives, even more if they're an academy student.

"Well...you could try asking the guards around the fences, Naruto. I'm not sure how to guide you on that without actually being there," Sakura smiled apologetically. "Do you never go to the training grounds?"

"Eh? But I thought they were closed off for people that aren't shinobi. I tried last time but the guard didn't let me in," Naruto tilted his head in confusion. Isn't that supposed to be a commonly known fact?

Sakura and Sasuke shot each other a knowing glance before Sakura sighed. How was she going to tell Naruto about this? It sure seemed pretty awkward, she didn't know how to continue the conversation if it comes to a point of him talking about everyone avoiding him. "Well...you're a shinobi now, I'm sure they'll let you in this time. Even if it's not official yet."

"Err...okay," Naruto nodded with an unsure smile. He was starting to get what she wanted but couldn't explain, the guard was keeping the demon brat out of the training ground. Understandable. "Thanks, Sakura!"

With a last wave of goodbye, Naruto sped off to his house at the speed of light, not wanting to go anywhere around that topic with his teammates. He really didn't want them to find out that he was an unlikable person, even though they probably knew already. Sakura waved back at him with a smile, before she realised.

"Alright! Wait.....we were supposed to walk home together! Eh- Sasuke!? Where did they go??"

Well, not today, she supposed.
