Naraina
Fandom: Legend of the Seeker
Naraina is a Seer - the last Seer to be precise. At first, the people of her village used this ability to learn their futures, but, when she started to foresee the horrible things Darken Rahl would do, her ability to see beyond the bounds of space and time terrified those in her village, even her parents. The people banded together to try and kill her, but her parents stopped them, convincing them that it would be enough to destroy her power. They claimed that their daughter was not evil, the power was, and it had "infected" her.
And so, the people captured Naraina and cut out her eyes in an attempt to silence her power. Unfortunately for them, her power did not come from her eyes. She continued to have visions and even harnessed her ability to "regain" her sight.
Cast out of her village, she travels the country, eventually taking up the mantle of Bounty Hunter to survive. She wears a blindfold of sorts to hide her brutally scarred face, using her power as a Seer to outmaneuver her opponents.
One day, she picks up a bounty on the supposed Seeker. Believing that the true Seeker had been killed long ago, she tracks down the pretender and takes him captive - at least she can get a good bounty out of his lies.
When he tries to escape, he manages to remove her blindfold. She lashes out in anger, threatening his life, but, when she touches him, she gets visions of his deeds past and future, which prove that he truly is the Seeker. She immediately kneels and begs his forgiveness, explaining about the false Seekers and her belief that he had been killed many years ago.
After proving her sincerity, she joins their quest to track down and kill Darken Rahl. During the journey, Zed heals her scars so she doesn't have to wear her blindfold. She walks among people free of her scars - of her burden - for the first time since her childhood.
When the Mord-sith attack, Denna realizes who she is and takes her captive as well. As the torture grows increasingly worse, Naraina continues to resist and Denna threatens to kill her with her Agiel. To avoid allowing the Mord-Sith any hold over her, Naraina steals Denna's knife and stabs herself in the heart.
Surprised, Denna parades Naraina's corpse in front of Richard to further break him, then uses the Breath of Life to revive her.
When Kahlan comes to save Richard, Denna orders Constance to ensure that Naraina is killed if anything goes wrong. So, Richard and Kahlan go to rescue her and find her lying dead in her cell. Distraught, they flee and reunite with Zed to continue their mission.
Meanwhile, both Denna and Naraina are revived. Denna is imprisoned for failing in her task, but Lord Rahl orders Cara to take up the "training" of Naraina in the hopes of gaining his own Seer.
Naraina resists, dying at the hands of Cara many times until the Mordsith fears she may not be able to bring the Seer back next time.
Finally, having endured the relentless pain and become exhausted from her many resurrections, Naraina gives into the "training" and submits to the Mordsith.
After proving reasonable confidence in her work, Cara sends Naraina to Rahl as a gift. Rahl uses her to track down his enemies, giving her objects of the rebels to trigger visions.
When Rahl goes to check on his wizard's progress in creating a Confessor, he's attacked by Richard and manages to escape with a piece of his shirt. He gives it to Naraina to find him.
She receives a vision and insists that she be the one to go after him, claiming that The Seeker trusts her and would let her get close enough to finish the job. Begrudgingly, Rahl agrees, using the mission as an opportunity for his Seer to prove herself.
Naraina follows her vision to the nearest D'haran outpost and issues orders to the men to attack her. Beaten half to death, she stumbles into the forest where she knows she'll find Richard and the others.
She collapses when she finds them and they nurse her back to health. She tells them a fractured version of the truth. Kahlan is hesitant to trust her, sensing that she's not telling them everything and knowing the risk if she's been turned by a Mordsith.
As they travel, Naraina convinces them all that she's still herself.
When a quad of D'harans ambush and look to Naraina for further orders, she turns on them and attacks. She pins Richard to a tree, her dagger at his throat, but she hesitates. Meanwhile, Zed and Kahlan dispatch the D'haran soldiers and turn to help Richard, but he waves them off.
Unable to bring herself to kill Richard, but also unable to disobey Rahl, she stabs herself instead of the Seeker.
This act breaks the Mordsith's "training" and, once she convinces the others, she continues with them on their quest.
One night, she receives a vision of a boy who possesses the qualities to become a Seer. She explains the urgency of the situation and leaves them to find the boy alone, insisting that it's better that no one else know who he is. Anonymity is a Seer's first and greatest defense.
While traveling, she stays with a mother and daughter for the night. The next morning, as Naraina packs her things, D'haran soldiers attack and take the mother hostage. Naraina fights back, but Denna appears and takes her from behind. The Mordsith uses the mother to manipulate the girl - Jennsen - who is Pristinely Ungifted. The Mordsith uses Jennsen to get the third box of Ordan, which is protected by powerful magic.
While walking through the woods, Jennsen throws the box into the trees, but Denna tortures Jennsen's mother with her Agiel. Naraina tries to step in, jerking against the chains binding her.
Richard, Kahlan, and Zed arrive and rescue Jennsen, but Denna gets away with Naraina and Jennsen's mother. Naraina helps the woman to her feet and receives a vision, discovering that she's Zed's daughter and Richard's mother.
They steal the boxes of Ordan with Jennsen and, begrudgingly, Denna's help. Richard uses them to take control of Denna and the D'harans. When Denna can't revive his mother, Richard uses the Power of Ordan to make the D'harans attack each other and Kahlan fight Denna. Naraina tries to step in, but he stops her with a word.
Jennsen separates the boxes, freeing them from Richard's control. Realizing what he's done, Richard is distraught. Naraina and the others reassure him that it's not his fault.
Jennsen leaves with the boxes of Ordan to keep them and herself safe. Naraina continues on her quest to find the new Seer.
After two weeks of travel, Naraina finally locates the boy - Tedric. He lives on a farm with his parents. He knows he's different, but has learned to hide it after all these years.
Naraina meets the family and ask Tedric's parents about his "gift". They tell her about his tendency to sense when things are coming. She explains his destiny as the next Seer and they allow her to train him to use his ability and make him a true Seer.
Once he's completed his training, Naraina warns him to keep his true identity a secret and leaves to rejoin Richard and the others.
Zed finds her on his way to meet up with the others and they help them unravel a situation with magical duplicates.
In the kingdom of Caddock, Richard and the others help with a curse to turn the monarch into a Caltrop. In the process, they learn where a copy of the Book of Counted Shadows is hidden.
During the search, the D'aharans show up and commandeer the library. Zedd and Naraina sneak inside while Kahlan warns Richard, who is searching for the librarian's son.
A painter, who has mastered a magical form of his art, paints the library into his artwork with the librarian and her son. Once inside the painting, all magic is nullified, leaving Naraina blind.
When Richard and the Boxes of Ordan disappear, Naraina receives a vision of him in the future. She manages to escape Rahl and warn Tedric of the Seeker's predicament before Rahl's men find her and kill her.
Tedric eventually marries and has a son. His son also finds love and has a daughter, who he trains to help watch for Richard's return.
Alia - Tedric's granddaughter - saves Richard from confessed men and takes him to Tedric. He explains the situation, telling Richard that Naraina is dead. He reveals that Alia is a Seer, but he used an enchanted talisman to suppress her abilities and protect her. He takes the talisman and sends Alia with Richard.
They're attacked by Cara - the Mordsith - and Richard convinces her to help them kill Master Rahl.
Richard makes it back to the present and kills Darken Rahl.
During the celebration of Rahl's fall, a Skreeling appears and they discover that the veil between the Underworld and the world of the living was torn by the destruction of the Boxes of Ordan.
Naraina gets a headache from the rift in the veil, glimpsing the pain of the Underworld.
They defeat the Skreeling and a battalion of Daharans show up, claiming Richard is the next Lord Rahl. Kahlan confirms the truth of their words.
Mord Sith arrive and kidnap many girls from the village. Richard leads an assault to distract them while Kahlan and a disgraced Mord Sith, Cara, rescue the girls. Naraina stays with the villagers to protect them.
When Naraina sees Cara, she reveals that Cara "trained" her and tries to convince Richard not to trust her, but, in the end, the five of them begin their journey for the Stone of Tears.
Along the way, they discover that, with the Veil torn, Naraina's power can reach into the Underworld, but it comes at a great cost. If she lingers too long, she could die.
She overhears something about the offer to become a banling, but not enough to know what it means. She tries to go in again when they kill more servants of the Keeper, but Richard pulls her out each time before she can learn anything.
They discover the Banlings later when searching for a clue to the Stone of Tears in a Daharan prison camp.
As they search for the Stone of Tears, Richard starts having headaches. A group of the Sisters of the Light arrive and explain that Richard has a huge amount of Han and not using it is hurting him.
Reluctantly, Richard accompanies the Sisters to the Old World and leaves Kahlan the Sword of Truth to name a new Seeker in the meantime. Naraina tries to "read" the Sisters, but doesn't get anything of use and finally lets Richard go, with the warning to be cautious.
A month later, Zed, Kahlan, Naraina, and Cara find and name a new Seeker - Leo. Leo and Cara grow close during their travels, though Cara won't admit it.
During a fight with a group of Banelings, Tedric appears out of nowhere to help in the fight. Zed and the others are confused by this young boy who knows Naraina, not knowing the truth about who he is.
Naraina takes him aside and tells him off for running away from home and risking his life. He tells her that he saw a vision of her death and he didn't know how else to contact her.
He refuses to leave until he's averted his vision and Naraina, unable to dissuade him, begrudgingly gives in. She tells Zedd and the others a half-baked version of the truth to protect Tedric's identity.
They travel several days, Tedric suffering from nightmarish visions of Naraina's death every night. While what he sees varies slightly, the end result is the same.
While spying on the Underworld through one of their fallen enemies, the Keeper senses her presence. He sends a surge of pain through her mind. Kahlan manages to pull her out of it, but not before the Keeper draws their location from the connection formed between them through her power. He has Rahl send one of his Mordsith after them in an attempt to remove Naraina as a threat.
The Mordsith finds them and reverses Naraina's power, blinding her. She struggles to defend herself, listening for where the threats are and relying on her instincts. She holds her own for a bit, but soon Tedric has to come to her rescue. She hears him scream as the Mordsith stabs him with her Agiel. Anger boiling over, she attacks the Mordsith, ignoring her severe disadvantage. She's hit by the Agiel several times before the Mordsith lands a solid blow to her chest. She keels over, fighting the pain of the Agiel, but failing. Her heart stops and she collapses to the ground dead.
Devastated, Tedric races recklessly into battle, his vision allowing him to hold his own. He almost gets himself killed, but Kahlan saves him and they manage to kill the Mordsith before she uses a knife to damage Naraina beyond saving. Zed burns the Sister of the Agiel's body and Cara uses the breath of Life to revive Naraina, much to Tedric's relief.
Naraina finally convinces Tedric to go home and has to explain the truth to Kahlan, Zed, and Cara unable to make an excuse for his ability to fight the Mordsith.
Shortly after that, the compass changes it's heading and leads them to the Old World to find Richard. They reunite after he escapes the Valley of Perdition, but are attacked by Nicci and Leo is killed. Zed kills Nicci and they escape the old world together after honoring Leo's sacrifice.
As they search for the Stone of Tears continues, they must avoid the Sisters of the Dark, team up with Pontus Rahl - Richard's dad, and discover that Nicci has been resurrected in a new body.
Kahlan and Richard find the stone of tears. Meanwhile, Zed and Cara are captured by the Mordsith. DarkenRahl retrains Cara and sends her to retrieve the stone for him.
After her betrayal, they reunite with Richard and Kahlan and go after Cara to get the stone and, hopefully, save their friend.
Zed uses a dangerous spell to try and undo the magic used to train Cara. He unwittingly undoes ALL of it, creating a world where Cara never became a Mordsith.
In this world, Richard controls the Boxes of Ordan and marries Kahlan with his brother Darken Rahl at his side as a "loyal" servant.
Zed tries to explain what happened. Kahlan can sense he's telling the truth and Naraina touches him to get a vision of his memories. In doing so, she gets her's back as well and vouches for Zed's story.
They mange to fix Zed's mistake and continue their journey to the Pillars of Creation. They get separated and Kahlan is confessed to Nicci by her own Han. The others manage to kill Nicci, but that only sends Kahlan into the Con Dar. She's still confessed because it was through her own magic.
Naraina, Zed, and Cara follow as best they can, but arrive at the pillars after Richard has given the stone to the Keeper in the form of a child and Kahlan has killed him. This breaks Kahlan free and her grief brings tears that form a new stone of tears. They save Richard and bring the stone to the pillars, sealing the rift and, once again, trapping the Keeper in the Underworld.
(And the show was canceled. 😕)
