ii. princess
The two teens are sitting in the most uncomfortable office chairs ever. They're listening to the social worker lady drone on. "John, Janeen, it has come to our attention that you are unemancipated minors living on your own," she explains, setting down the file she was looking at. The siblings look at each other before looking back at her. "No, no, no," they said, trying to steer clear of this conversation.
The social worker was having none of their antics. "Look, I need honesty to help you guys. That's what we want, right?"
"Yeah, We are being honest," the younger girl replies, trying to convince the social worker.
"When was the last time you guys spoke to your uncle?" she inquires, catching the siblings off guard.
"Uhhhh," Janeen starts looking over to her brother. He finishes for her, "34 minutes ago."
The social worker lady looks at them, giving them the 'do you think I'm stupid look'. "When was the last time you saw him."
"2 hours and 43 minutes ago," Janeen states, nodding to affirm her answer.
The lady looks at her tilting her head to the side as if reading right through Jeanie and John B's lies. "Well, Janeen, John, we're going to come out there tomorrow and talk with your uncle. If he's not there, we're going to move forward with foster care. I promise we are going to find you two are safe and loving home."
Janeen's P.O.V
She really thought we wanted to hear that. And this is where our story starts, dad lost at sea, Uncle T MIA, and the bride of Frankestine threatening John B and me with foster care. But we caught a break.
We're on the docks watching the T.V, hurricane Agatha closing in. Hurricane Agatha coming in the same day they were supposed to do our assessment. John B looks at me, "you wanna call them." I nod then pull out my phone.
"DCS, how can I help you," the lady over the phone asks.
"Uh, yeah, hi, I think we're gonna have to reschedule"

"It's double overhead out there guys," Pope says carrying his surfboard standing next to John B and Janeen.
"Are those even surfable waves?" John B asks while leading them down to the beach. Janeen runs ahead of them before turning back to them.
"Come on guys, don't be pussies," she yells at them and takes her grey surfboard out into the waves. The boys follow and they start to surf. A big wave comes and catches Janeen under, but she gets back onto her board catching the next 2 while John B falls. John B sees a boat while sitting on his surfboard. Janeen catches one more wave before spotting her brother and looking into his line of sight to see the same boat he sees.
"Holy shit, did you see that?" he asks, looking at her and Pope who had joined them.
"Someone must be really stupid," Janeen says, she sits for a moment before starting to paddle back to shore, John B and Pope behind her. When they get to the beach, the twins say goodbye to Pope doing the Pouge handshake then running home before the bad part of the storm hit.
They get inside safely both dripping with water onto the wooden floor of the Chateau before lining their surfboards against the wall. They were still waiting for JJ who said he was going to ride out the storm with them. Being stuck with his dad would've made it worse. While Janeen was waiting for him, she dried off and changed into a sports bra and sleep shorts. She then set up the pull out bed in the living room and laid down on it, playing games on her phone. She turns to her side and sets her phone on the coffee table and closes her eyes till she feels the bed dip on the side and an arm wraps around her waist.
"Hey princess," the voice says making Janeen aware of who was next to her.
"Hey JJ," she said rolling over to snuggle into his chest and falling asleep, letting soft snores fall out of her mouth

Jeanie had always been afraid of the storms. She was okay with light rain but storms were a different story. She hated not being able to afford backup generators and sitting in the dark with her dad and John B. The way the rain pounded against the roof had her terrified that it would collapse. She was also frightened that the tree in the back of the chateau might collapse while they were sleeping, which is why she slept on the pullout with JJ.
He was usually the one to comfort her during these storms. Whispering that everything would be okay and it would be over in the morning. Jeanie also used to be very fearful of drowning in the marsh; JJ helped her through that.
Tonight was different. Her phone screen read two am, so she got up to go get something to drink. She made sure to gently remove JJ's arm from her waist, as to not wake him. His loud snores informed her that he was defiantly asleep. She was like a mouse during this process, tiptoeing, turning the water on low, carefully closing the cabinet. Then she stubbed her toe. It hurt like a bitch.
Suddenly she could hear footsteps and then JJ was right in front of her, shinning the battery powered flashlight right in her eyes. "Ow, my eyes, JJ."
"Sorry, I thought you were a robber."
"What the fuck do we have to rob?" She laughs quietly.
"Good point." He also chuckled a little bit, till their laughs fell silent. "The storm?"
"What?"
"You're up because of the storm."
"Yeah, could barely sleep. Sometimes, during hurricane season, I have that one nightmare. That's why I've been sleeping on the pullout."
"Aw, I thought you just wanted my company."
"In your dreams Maybank." She whispers at him playfully, letting a soft smile grace her face. It was hard to see in the dark after he turned off the flashlight but he could see her cheeks raise into a smile.
"Sit on the counter."
"What?"
"Sit on the counter."
"Um, okay." She plops herself on the counter, the tile against her bare legs was cold. Suddenly, JJ was in between her legs and hugging her tight around the waist. She wraps her arms around his shoulders and nestles her head into his neck. Always smells like saltwater and weed.
"The storm won't hurt you."
"I know."
"You're not going to drown. You're a good swimmer."
"I know."
"You'll be okay."
"I know."
"I'll protect you."
"I know." She smiles into his neck.
Suddenly he lifted her off the counter by her thighs, making her squeal, and walked her back to the pullout, plopping her back unto the squeaky mattress. "Now, time for sleep." He got into the bed after her and wrapped them both in the covers, his bare chest inline with her back. He got really close, wrapping an arm around her waist and nuzzled into her neck, just as she had done.
"Thank you JJ."
"Of course. Can't have my princess upset."
She blushes in the dark, luckily he can't see.
