2 | Terrified
Billy eased up on the paddling, and as he got closer he saw the water was being disturbed by whales or dolphins of some kind. There were at least four of them, and from what he could see, they looked too small for whales yet too large to be dolphins. Billy couldn't suppress the fear that tingled up his spine. The water splashing over the kayak suddenly felt cold and biting. As the dark shadows came closer to the surface, Billy realised they could only be one thing – killer whales!
Billy quickly turned his kayak around and started frantically paddling for shore, shouting for help and trying to draw attention in the process. Behind him, the killer whales followed in pursuit and were swiftly gaining. He couldn't paddle fast enough! Closer and closer they came towards Billy. Suddenly, up ahead, Billy saw a huge dark shadow coming nearer and nearer to the surface of the water. He was almost in a state of panic! Scenarios of how this could end raced through his mind, with one numbing fact overpowering every other thought – he'd never reach the shore!
He could see the large fin breaking the surface, then the shiny back. The white markings on the glistening black skin were unmistakable. It was the largest, most terrifying killer whale Billy had ever seen - not that he'd seen any in real life, he thought amidst the blanket of fear that enveloped him. It was heading straight for him, with the smaller ones nipping at the back of his kayak. With nowhere to turn, all he could do was try and keep his kayak steady. He watched as the giant killer whale before him opened its mouth, and he could see the sharp teeth in long shiny rows. He felt the hot breath, and saw no way for escape. The whales behind him were nudging, pushing him closer and closer towards the open mouth that could easily swallow a medium sized car. Billy knew his lifejacket certainly couldn't help much in this situation.
By now, Billy was yelling at the top of his lungs, "Help, someone HELP!" But strangely, there were no boats in sight, no walkers or picnickers at the water's edge.
The water around him was being sucked into the open mouth, and as he was being pushed into it, Billy suddenly thought of his best friend Emily. How would she feel about his sudden disappearance? It hurt him to know how sad she would be. He had told her about buying this kayak, but hadn't planned on coming straight to the beach. The only clue as to what could've happened to him was his car parked up near the sand. Would his parents keep searching for him? Would Emily realise how much he....Oh, if only he could've told her once more how much he liked her!
As all these thoughts were racing through his mind, Billy was going farther and farther into the great whale's mouth. Pretty soon his kayak was all the way in, far enough for the mouth to shut behind him. But before it did, Billy stretched around and said one last goodbye to the light of day and those he loved.
