Chapter 27

The first few days at the Burrow were some of the best I'd ever had in my life. Mrs Weasley was busy furiously knitting warm Christmas jumpers for all of us, and I had a strong suspicion that the green one would be gifted to me as a present. I met Mr Weasley, Ginny's dad, who was almost nicer than Mrs Weasley, despite his hatred of my father. He brightened up immediately when I referred to him as an 'ungrateful, slimy git' and then seemed to like me a lot more.

Potter and Weasley arrived a few days after me and Hermione, and once they had both gotten over the fact that Hermione and I were dating, and told me that if I ever hurt Hermione they'd kill me, they grinned and we were all talking in no time. Geez, I thought happily, it was like the last few years had never happened.

Of course, I met all the other Weasley brothers, too, and spent most of my time getting caught with Ginny, Luna and Hermione in the village nearby, bewitching loaves in the bakery to hover above their shelves, and racing Potter and Weasley on the second-hand broomsticks they kept in the shed behind the Burrow.

We picked apples, threw snowballs when it started to snow, put up decorations (which included Luna hanging upside-down by her ankle, which was wrapped in tinsel, and Ginny catching her on a broomstick - all indoors, might I add) and sat around in the evening by the fire, talking and catching up and doing things that I'd never, ever done before at Malfoy Manor.

It was late on Christmas Eve, and Ginny and Luna, whom Hermione and I were sharing a room with, were fast asleep. Hermione was laying beside me, a book propped open on her chest, and I had started to read along with her, barely awake, by the light of the moon streaming in through the window.

Hermione closed the book and rolled over to look at me, smiling.

"I love it here," I whispered. "I love it."

"I know," whispered Hermione, brushing hair out of my face. She closed the space between us and kissed me softly, then settled down beneath the covers of the makeshift bed. "Merry Christmas, Draco."

I put my fingers to my lips, wondering how Hermione could be so brilliant at kissing, before finally replying, "Merry Christmas, Hermione," and falling asleep almost instantly.

"IT'S CHRISTMAS!"

I was woken up by Ginny Weasley stepping on my foot in a rush to open the presents at the foot of her bed.

"Ow! Gin, get off!" I mumbled, half asleep. She looked down and grinned broadly, her flaming red hair a total mess. I sat up and nudged Hermione awake, finding Ginny's grin to be infectious. Luna was sitting up in her own bed, her blond hair cascading down her back as she rubbed her eyes, surprised to see a stack of presents beside her. I looked to my left. A small pile of presents, most wrapped in green paper. I had a feeling they were going to be the best presents I'd ever received.

"Happy Christmas, Draco," said Hermione, kissing my cheek, before getting straight to unwrapping her presents along with the others.

"Happy Christmas," I replied, taking into my hands a present addressed to me from my mother. I opened it up quickly and found a box of expensive Honeyduke's chocolates. I was just studying them when Ginny snatched the box from my hands, opened it up, popped a chocolate into her mouth and then bounced back onto her bed. Hermione and I both laughed and dug into the sweets, which admittedly tasted good.

Next I opened the gift from Hermione. It was a moving, magical photograph of her and me at the last Quidditch game of the season. We were both cheering wildly, and then we kissed and tied our scarves together, laughing loudly. I looked over at her and kissed her affectionately.

"When did you take this?" I asked, showing her the picture. "It's brilliant," I added.

"When you weren't looking," she smiled, leaning her head on my shoulder. "I had it developed a few days ago."

"Open my gift, 'Mione," I said eagerly, pointing it out on the top of her heap of presents. She grinned and picked it up, and unwrapped it to reveal a small, white box.

"Yay, a box," she smiled sarcastically. "Just what I always wanted."

"Open it!" I urged excitedly. I'd never been this happy over Christmas. Hermione flipped the box of the lid to reveal my gift - a beautiful silver bracelet with three charms adorning the chain. A lion, a snake, and a small silver heart. I heard Hermione's breath catch in her throat as I slipped it over her wrist and she threw her arms around my neck.

"It's beautiful," she said, her voice muffled against my shoulders. "Thank you - it's - it's beautiful." She stared in awe at the pretty bracelet on her slim wrist, and Luna and Ginny came over to ogle it, too, Ginny wearing her new Weasley jumper, Luna wearing a brand-new pair of Spectraspecs.

"Well?" Ginny demanded. "Put on your Weasley jumpers, all of you! It's tradition, after all." Luna's was far too big for her, but was blue with a bronze 'L' in the centre. Hermione's was red, with a golden 'H', and mine was a dark, emerald green, with my initial sewn in silver. I pulled it over my head and was surprised to find that it was a perfect fit.

We hurried downstairs and saw Mr and Mrs Weasley preparing breakfast with her older sons. Harry and Ron were sitting at the table, both wearing their new jumpers, Ron complaining about how it was maroon, I'm sure.

Exchanging hurried 'Happy Christmas'es, we all sat down around the table and crowded around Hermione's new bracelet.

Harry caught my eye, grinned, and said, inclining his head to Hermione, "Scared, Malfoy?"

I snorted. "You wish."
