The Beginning Of My End.
Layla's POV
What do I say when I have nothing left to say?
What do I do when everything has already been done?
What can a side line super hero do in times of need?
Well, I shut my eyes and listened real close to the voices. Someone found their lost puppy after desperately looking for it for months. The cry of a newborn baby brought a smile to their faces. Happy birthday to you and enjoy your birthday cake. The happiness that he felt when she said yes fourteen years ago. But somewhere all to close to me was a voice screaming, screaming for love and attention. For someone to appreciate her and to tell her that she did a good job. For a voice to say you did it... And that person screaming was me.
"Love is all they have in this city and none comes to me." I moved my finger across my lips and smiled. I could taste how bitter I was just from the words that lift my mouth.
The night was black and the clouds covered the stars, the only light come from the city I stood above. My house stood at the top of the a hill, strong and sturdy. All the lights were turned off so that I could see clearly though the darkness never scared the love away. How did I end up with the this much hatred and bitterness, it was their fault.
"And on today's news a young boy saved from falling from a deserted car hanging over the Johnson River," the reporter reported as she should, "onlookers say that there was a flying woman and a floating man. More news right after the weather."
My friends in the spotlight while I just stand and stare. Teleporting, flying, floating, jumping, flexibility. Powers I longed to have but instead got the underrated unless power... Or at least that how they make it feel, sometimes. I'm invisible to them and they know it.
"They guys look." Jess said as she jumped over the couch and perfectly sitting down.
"Oh, Hey. We're on the same news channel, again." Henry leaned forward and he's eyes focused on the television.
"Did we seriously all have to go? It was only for Jess. She could've done it alone." Michael flopped down in the chair closet to me.
"Its just easier that way. With all of us around we are able to prevent anything else from going wrong." Jess replied.
I stared at them, all of them, waiting for the story to be told like how they did in the beginning. The moment they got home Jess would spring to her feet and stop anyone from switching the television on. Then, Henry would stand next to me and smile warmly. Michael would teleport in and start reenacting what happened with Jess. We would laugh because Jess told the story wrong and Michael didn't do something. Henry would pull me aside and tell me the real story or at least his point of view. Both of us would sit on the roof and watch the city lights and sometimes even the sun rising or setting. We would speak and speak until we had nothing to say but that was a rare occasion.
"Goodnight guys." I said as I pulled myself up the stairs. It was getting harder and harder to do nowadays.
Though two strong hands helped push my body up the stairs. It was Henry. I didn't even have to look back or hear him, I just knew it was him. He was always there to help whether it be me or a stranger he was there, even before the powers. As we got up to the top floor he gently pushed me to the bay window which led to our, not so secret, secret hiding spot.
"I need to talk to you."
"I'm really not feeling all that well..."
"It's important." Henry's voice was stern and I immediately knew that he wasn't joking.
"Fine fine mister grumpy pants."
"Grumpy pants?" He asked with his one eyebrow raised.
"Yes. Grumpy pants because it looks like you had one too many grumpy pills today."
A small chuckle escaped his lips and then a full blown laugh straight after. He gave me a quick smile as he tried to caught his breath and wipe away that one small tear from his eye. I haven't heard him laugh like that in a long time and it felt nice to hear it too. A small moment was taken by us just looking and smiling at each other.
"So there was something you wanted to say?"
"Oh, that? No, not in particular. I just wanted to sit up there with you sitting exactly where you are and stare at the city."
"You gave me your scary stern voice just so that we could watch the city... Seriously!?"
"I missed this okay? Plus I haven't seen you much lately."
"What do you mean? You see me at breakfast and at dinner, occasionally."
"I don't see you in the morning. You're never at home when I wake up and are always late for breakfast. You go to the bed at like five and occasionally you're wake until dinner but go to sleep straight after... Is everything okay?"
I stared off into the distance. He was right, sort of. Every night at midnight I would wake up and walk down to the seashore. I would sit on the cold beach sand and a blanket of water would lay over my shoulders. Sweet dreams of those in the city just beyond the hill would play like movies in my head. I could see each one as clear as day, both dreams and nightmares. Every night I would sit closer and closer to the sea, as if it called out to me.
"Come to the ocean." I said as I got up. I heard Henry stand up and start to pull my arm.
Though everything after that was a blur until I was at the ocean front. I sat down and sure enough a blanket of water was my comfort. Imagines of the dreams lay out in front of me and my hand glided passed them like a television remote. All of the dreams being dreamt were there except for one which held a special place in my dark heart.
"Why is he not dreaming?" I started waking up and finally the salty water drenched me. I looked around and found nothing but sand and more sand.
"So this is where you take me every night?" I said to the ocean, "if anyone saw me they would think I'm crazy."
My eyes eventually wondered up to the house and I was shocked by how far I had come. How did I walk so far and in such little time? Why am I only asking these questions now? My mind was riddled with questions and no answers for those questions.
"The ocean, huh? What magical powers did you get cursed with?"
