Night Watch
Michael's POV
Will you wake up?
Will you question me once you do?
How do I explain?
"Don't worry about it." Henry said.
"But how can I not worry when you guys just disappeared for hours with no explanation?"
"Listen, I would like to tell you what is going on but I'm silenced by secrecy. I need you to trust me as not only your leader but as your friend." He put his hand on my shoulder in attempt to reassure me but I couldn't be reassured.
"I'll trust you but I will require a proper explanation soon." I brushed his hand off my shoulder, "You also need to check up on Jess. I know she was wrong but please just go comfort her." Henry shook his head in agreement but said nothing in response.
"How long will it take for her to wake up?" I asked as I looked aimlessly at her. What was she doing with him and where did they go?
I know my feelings for her are never going to go anywhere but I still get jealous when they are alone together. I just wish that I was the one who meet her first because maybe she would have fallen in love with me. No, her heart was meant for Henry that's what the prophecy said but then again the prophecy also said that she would turn evil, which won't happen.
"I don't know. Last time... It's been... I don't know." Henry kept stopping himself before he could say anything more than I don't know.
"So are you going to go deal with Jess?" I asked once more.
Henry's eyes looked down at her with compassion and a part of him didn't want to leave, "I'll go but I'll be back tonight. We'll take shifts watching her and if she wakes up please call me as soon as possible."
"Yes sir." I said subconsciously. Henry always reminded me of someone but I can never quite put my finger on who he reminded me of.
As I pulled the chair from the table, and sat down, I began to wonder how this all happened- and how I come to love a girl whose heart was already inbeded in the hands of other. I know that it didn't happen a day ago but it sure doesn't feel like we -Jess and I- have been there for the past five years. I guess you lose track of time when you are saving lives and having fun with your friends, even if you are have only been friends with them for two and a half years...
It was a cold winter's day when we first arrived to meet our new set of members. Jess and I were sitting on the couch in the café shop we were told to go to. She was shivering like a anxious little pup because of the cold, it was kind of cute. We were also told to wear a rose somewhere visible on our body. Jess wore a headband with a flower pin pinned to the side while I wore the flower pin on the collar of my winter coat. The café was warm and cozy and only was cold for a brief moment when the glass doors opened and closed. It's wasn't jammed packed nor was it empty, it was half full or half empty depending on how you looked at it. It's interior design was full with warm brown colors and other accent pieces, like the rising sun and ocean on the wall in front of me.
"There you go sir. One coffee and one hot chocolate."
"Oh thank you." I said as I pushed the hot chocolate in front of the Jess.
"Oh yummy!" She exclaimed and put her gloeved fingers around the cup, "I wonder how long we are going to have to wait."
"They did say that we were to meet up at ten."
"And what's the time now."
"It's quarter to ten." I said looking at my watch.
"And we've been sitting here for how long?" Jess gave me those you woke me up way too early eyes but I just smiled the question away before taking a slip of my coffee.
As the clock went ten the café doors rung open and two mysterious coated figures appeared. My jaw dropped. Not a minute to early nor a minute late, exactly ten. They let the doors close behind them as one nodded their head at us. Fear ran through my body as one search in their pocket for something. My hand was gently held by Jess who seemed unusually calm especially since she is often the afraid one- contradictory to how she is now.
"Stop trying to scare them, you made him go pale." the smaller of the two said as she took off the hood of the coat. She was gorgeous with long blonde hair and sky blue eyes. She had a fringe which hid her forehead but made her look cute.
"I'm sorry, I was so look for my flower pin. I forgot to put it on before we left and on our way there and when we got here..." The tall guy said as he pulled his hood off while simultaneously pulling out the rose pin from his pocket. Somewhere in between all of these Jess had let go of my hand and placed it back on her cup.
"Hi. Can I please get a water with a lemon slice. One coffee and cup of tea, please and thank you." The girl ordered as our waitress wrote everything down.
"Anything to eat?"
"Not for now, thank you." The guy answered. Just from that little interaction I already knew that they have been friends and or partners for a while now. Though I was unsure if our two duos would be able to get along as a team.
"So, how's the winter been treating you both?"
"Layla, introduction would be a good place to start." the guy whispered into the girl's ear.
"Oh right!" She said with a cute clumsy smile, "My name is Layla and this is..."
"I'm Henry. It's a pleasure to meet the two of you." Henry cut her off
"Hi, I'm Jessica but Jess is just fine."
"Hey, I'm Michael. It's too is a pleasure to meet your acquaintance."
"Okay. Now can I start with small talk?" Layla asked as she gave Henry puppy dog eyes. All he did was sip on the tea that was placed in front of him not so long ago.
"So. How long have you been in Long-Bay?"
"It'll be like three and a half years tomorrow?" Jess asked me as if paid attention to those types of things.
"Three and a half years? That's so cool. Wait, then why are we only meeting now?"
"We haven't been living here for that long to be exact..." Jess started.
"We've been back and forth from our home in the South."
"From this point onwards they'll be living with us." Henry finished off the explanation and the wheels seemed to have clicked in her head.
"Ohh. Is that why the house is getting modified."
"Yip. Though I don't see your luggage...?" Henry said as he looked around.
"Your boss sent us an address to send our luggage to. It should be going to the Palace hotel or already be there." Jess reassured them but I too felt reassured.
"Good. Then we are all going to the Palace hotel for the night. Tomorrow we will be home once more." Henry spoke again.
The nights passed and so did the days. I watched over her during the day and Henry watch over her during the night. Though I don't think he let himself sleep because every morning I would find him wide awake with bags under his eyes. He was starting to lose hope but I guess he would reassure himself that she would wake up again. One week passed and he still had not slept a wink. Sleep was a foreign concept to him now, plus an enemy.
"The boss is looking for you." I said as I put my hand on his shoulder. He looked up at me and smiled before stumbling up to his feet. I took my seat and looked her. It was hard enough watching over her during the day and now just imagining how hard it must've been during the night, it gave me a huge amount of respect for him. He probably had done the same thing for me when I got drunk and slept for four days in a row. Though that is nothing compared to this.
"He's a good leader but not for our two duos."
Moans and groans started to get louder and the silence in the room was no longer. Movement accompanied the moans and soon two pale eyelids fluttered open. She looked around the room and stopped on the milk and cookies that were placed there one week ago. I got up and went to her side.
"We're awake now." I said as I walked closer to her and sat down
