My Past
Layla POV
How can I know for sure if I'm doing the right thing?
Is this me looking back in the mirror?
What is happening?
A girl once told me that the sun seemed to smile at me and now that girl is different and angry. That girl was me and I can't believe I fell for my own tricks. That day was sent playing with Davi, a another six year old like me. He was running around with imaginary friends and playing superheroes. To think that's its been almost twelve years now- and surprisingly he hasn't gone anywhere. Although, David died not so long ago yet he still is playing with his toy cars and thinking his all big and powerful but in actual fact his just a giant softy who cares too much about his friends.
"Tell me the story again David. Tell me the story about the guy with superhuman strength and that could fly." I asked him as we lay under the table with blankets and Christmas lights hanging over the edges of the table, it was our fort that we made when the grown ups were being grown ups.
"Is this your favorite story?" David asked back.
"No but I can tell it's yours."
David giggled before starting his story, "The man in the sky. He was a man not from this planet. Strong but not like any other. Braver then a lion which would hide away from him. He was first known when he flu through the sky and saved a plane from falling out of the sky. The people asked, 'is that a bird?'"
"No it wasn't."
"'Is it a plane?'" David continued.
"No the plane is over there." I replied in a stupid voice.
"'Is it superhuman?'" David asked again.
"Yes it is." There was a short moment of silence before the laughter of two six year old children rushed out of their fort on the table.
"He bravely brought the plane down to the ground and everyone was safe. The people asked and asked again, 'Sir, what's your name?' 'Sir, where are you from?' but the only response they got was..."
"I'm Henry." we said in unison both young and old Layla and David.
"Is that why you wanted to change your name, Henry David?" I asked as I looked over at old David laying next to me though now he was new Henry.
"You loved that story when we were younger." He said as he lay on his side with his face resting in his hand.
"I never said it but yes it was my favorite story that you told me- well technically my second favorite."
"I know you all to well, Miss Layla-Jade." He leaned forward and I thought he was going to kiss me but rather he moved a piece of my hair out of my eyes.
"I am an open book to you, Sir Henry David." I said back as I pushed him gently down. We laughed and for a while it felt like we were back under the table making up stories and playing with our toys.
"Henry, boss is calling." Jess screamed as she got closer to the window.
"There's no need to be so loud, Jess." Henry said as he got up and went into the room.
"Should I come?" I asked as I got up and went to the window where Henry had his hand out to help me down.
"Yeah-"
"No!" Jess yelled over Henry and drowned out what he was saying.
"Sure, Layla. You are more than welcome to come." His voice was tender towards me but I could hear him holding back his words.
"No. Nevermind, it seems to be important."
"I insist on you being there," he pulled me closer to him then continued, "please come, just to spit Jess."
"Fine. I'll come." I replied as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me along.
In the background I could hear Jess bitterly disagreeing with Henry's choice but it didn't seem to bother him all that much. I've known her for two and a half years now and I know Jess has been crushing on him for a while. She continues to show off her powers and never misses her opportunity to try and push me out of the picture. She almost had her way but then Henry ran after me instead of her, that one faithful night... I sighed quitely to myself as I pushed that memory away. Jess is also the most obvious person and yet Henry seems to be a oblivious to her attraction. If she had magic I think I would have lost Henry long ago and I probably wouldn't even exist.
"Here you are, Henry. Oh, and you brought Layla with you." The boss smiled through the screen.
"Yes Sir. I hope you have don't mind."
"No no. I was actually hoping you would bring her. This mission needs the two of you."
Jess was leaning against one of the many walls, her arms crossed over her chest and her head lowered down and pouting. She was clearly angry and not just about us going on a mission together.
"Since you two are the closest we have to a couple... We'll need you to intercept the new love competition that is being held- in a months time. We aspect that the company holding this competition is involved in the disappearance of many of the contestants and a lot of money." He's tone was harsh and his eyes were just serious. The mood of the room completely changed. Jess was even focused on the boss and it was like everyone was in a trans.
"Yes Sir." Henry said making me jump slightly at the loudness of his response.
"Yes, Sir." I replied loud enough for him to hear me.
"Isn't this going to be fun. Just you and I, like old times."
"Yeah. Like old times."
"What's wrong, Layla?" Henry put his hand on my shoulder and squeezed it tightly. He looked at me with his blue eyes and then with his green- a cute side effect of his powers that change his eye colour. Green was concerned, blue was excited or surprised, yellow was a grumpy or confused, red was angry, purple was interested and finally pink was love.
"It's nothing. I'm just worried about failing this mission."
"Don't worry. I'll be there to help you and I know you'll be there to help me. Just don't be discouraged." Henry reassured me as he made his way to the kitchen.
"If you don't think you are ready to do it then why don't you just not go? Why don't you give up so that you don't have the chance to fail?" Jess walked closer and closer to the me. Soon pinning me up against the wall.
"Give it a rest, Jess. You should learn how to give someone else the spotlight." Michael said as squeezed in between us. He wasn't touching nor squishing me at all. He pushed Jess back slightly giving me enough room to move from behind him.
"Whose side are you on?" Jess scream quietly at him.
"We are a team. There should be no sides, Jess." Henry said standing in the of me as well.
I've never felt more protected than this. I felt like a little sister with her two older brothers defending her from a bully. Though it wasn't surprising that Henry would be in front of a me, he would unfortunately jump in the front of a bullet for me, I wish it wasn't so.
"But she has no powers, she is useless."
"That's not-" I pulled Henry back- stopping him from saying anymore.
"I may not have any superpowers but that doesn't mean I'm any less of a human. I guess superpowers made you forget that you were once a ordinary person like me. Don't treat others like crap because you feel insecure about yourself," I said moving pass both of my 'older brothers',"now if you would excuse me I have something to do."
I sent no more time in that room. I immediately bolted out of the house and didn't want to stop until I reached the comforting feeling of the beach. Why was I so drawn to the sea? Why did I feel a sense of relief when I was by the ocean? The ocean seemed to be call out to me as if to follow it. My breath was quick as I stood at the edge of the pebble pathway and before I knew it my hands were taking off my shoes. My blonde strains waved in front of my face as the wind blow softly and I moved closer to my addiction. As I neared the seashore the waves started moving in an unnatural way which made me interested--and my unnatural addiction to the unusual made me want to follow it. The waves leaded me to a waterfall which was quite off from the main beach, though no one ever ventured this far away.
"Layla!? Where are you going? Why is the water moving like this." He called out and the water went silent. My body stopped and freeze in the suddenness of his presence.
"What? How did I get here?"
"You were following the water and it was moving?"
