- Hansuke is best friends with Esashi Kiyoshi, whom he met while feigning a sick day from his university at Anteiku. Kiyoshi happens to be the only person who refers to Hansuke as Holt; he does so because he likes the foreign name, extending that to Hansuke's foreignness in a more general sense as well.

- Hansuke lives on campus, but he visits home often to check in with his mother (Japanese) and father (Norwegian). They're expecting another child that, despite arriving so late in their lives, is currently their greatest joy, and Hansuke himself likes the idea of becoming an older brother.

General Appearance: He's lost interest in dragging a brush through his hair every morning, resulting in the savage bedhead he greets the world with. His bright blue eyes (a so-called gift from his father's side) are framed by thin, blond lashes that look near-nonresistant in the right lighting, and there's a shamelessly rosy hue to his cheeks at any given time, which he attributes to his lack of exercise and the strain of having to walk everywhere recently, and which Kiyoshi attributes to the fact that Hansuke is embarrassed by everything, so his body habitually developed the coloring. On a daily basis, Hansuke dons simple, dark t-shirts and jeans, something Kiyoshi disapproves of in the summer, thinking them too stuffy. He has a incorrigible habit of leaving the shoelaces of his Converse untied, and because of this, he has his fair share of bruises tattooing his body from his constant tripping. Hansuke also tends to carry a fraying backpack with him, which holds his laptop and a few other choice items.

Personality: Described as "an eighteen-year-old baby" by Kiyoshi, Hansuke is really just that. He's an emotional boy who thinks of others pain as his own more often than not, and who reacts unfavorably to unpleasant news of any kind. Because of his wide range of emotional responses, others tend to avoid upsetting him at any cost, though a few people have been known to take a sick sort of pleasure from seeing his crying face, as it's apparently quite cute. On the flip side, however, he's a charmingly sweet boy who enjoys simply making others happy. He's also dreadfully forgetful and easily embarrassed, and is also known as the "King of Klutzes" at his university.

Miscellaneous: Loves watching old black-and-white movies because of the "elegant simplicity" and generally forces Kiyoshi to watch them with him. Has difficulty cooking complex (nutritious) meals for himself, and so relies a trifle too often on instant-ramen and TV-dinners.
