Not So Different

Roxie Blackwood and Benji Webb
Roxie Blackwood and Olympia Westerfield

-

Roxie walked down the street. She didn't go on walks very often, they only owned like three pairs of sneakers and they didn't like any of them a whole lot, given how her parents had picked them out. Her feet were starting to hurt so she pulled out her phone to call someone to pick her up. Her family wasn't crazy rich, but they did have a live-in maid. Maybe Unity could pick her up? Wait no she didn't have a driver's license.

Given how the Willows were currently out of town and Eve was coming down with something, Artemis it was then. She was about to press call when she saw someone out of the corner of her eye. A blonde boy. Benji Webb. Maybe she could talk to them for a bit. "Benji! Hey!" She held up her hand and waved. He held his hand up begrudgingly returning the gesture.

He seemed bummed out. Unbeknownst to the usually oblivious Roxie, he always looked like this. But regardless, she put her phone away and walked over to the bench the boy was sitting at, sitting next to him.

"You look upset. Wanna talk about it?" She asked, like an inch away from him. "Uh thanks, but no." Benji shook his head. "You sure?" She smushed herself against the boy's side and he pushed her off. "Okay, okay! Fine." He rested his head in his hands and looked at the girl.

Roxie scooted father away from him and he began. "Look Roxie, you know my sisters, Emily and Irina?"

Roxie nodded. Everyone in Mary's Field knew their local beauty queens. Her brother was dating the blonde one and Robin's sister was dating the redhead one. "My parents only care about them. If I died, they wouldn't care. If one of them got so much as a scrape of the knee, they call an ambulance. It's not fair! What the hell was the point of even having me if you were just going to push me aside for them for my whole damn life?!" He yelled.

Roxie stared at him for a minute, clutching her skirt. She understood just how he felt. "I understand that. My parents had five boys before me they all loved and raised, meanwhile I was pushed onto nanny after nanny." She tipped her head back. "Why even bother having me?"

He craned his head towards her, a smile tugging at his lips. Finally, someone who understood them. "I seem to be the only one who knows that they're not perfect. It's annoying!" And he was angry again. Once again, Roxie found herself relating.

"EJ will take over Blackwood Enterprises, Brandon's the perfect little scientist, people basically worship William for knowing how to read, Nathan's so 'mature and responsible for his age' and Johnny is a perfect little photographer. And then there's me. Little ol' Roxie. What do I have to offer?" Roxie stared off into space. She had never given it much thought. She wasn't good at anything, was she?

"You have great taste in fashion, I have to give you that. Maybe a fashion designer?" Benji looked at her. "Maybe. You know...I'd never really thought about what I was gonna do when I became older." She shrugged. "Anyway, I was gonna call Artemis to come and pick me up. Do you need a ride perchance?" They offered.

"Yeah, I don't see why not." He shrugged, leaning back. So Roxie called her girlfriend, asked if she could pick them and she did. As Benji got out of the car, he stopped for a second. "Oh yeah, Roxie?"

"Hm?"

"Thanks for just giving me a chance to talk tonight. Felt really good to just get all that off my chest." He scratched the top of his head. "Of course! If you ever want to talk, just shoot me a call or text." She smiled. "I'm sure Emily can get you my number."

He held up his hand in a waving gesture and Roxie did the same.

*two years earlier*

Roxie looked at the smallest girl in what the internet had come to call 'The Westerfield Trinity'. What was her name again? Olivia? She knew it started with an O. She seemed to be standing apart from the group like Roxie was. She inched closer.

"Hi. I'm Roxanne, but you can just call me Roxie. And you're Olivia right?" She held out her hand. "Olympia. I like your outfit." She shook her hand. "Oh, sorry and thanks. I like your necklace." The blonde smiled at the brunette. Roxie did look nice. She was wearing a pink and white plaid outfit. And Olympia did have a cool necklace. A silver ice skate.

The two sat in silence for a moment. "So, are you also the youngest?" Olympia asked and Roxie nodded. "Five boys before me." She forced a smile. "Damn, and I thought only having two before me was a good enough reason to not love me." She laughed humorlessly and shook her head.

"What do you mean?" Roxie sat down on the cushioned bench next to the girls. "I've been mostly raised by nannies, meanwhile my sisters , Rosabelle and Adrienne , get all the love my parents can give." She pulled her knees to her chest. "Same here. I think it's more understandable because five more before me...but they never even made an effort." Roxie lightly adjusted her jacked. "Sorry, am I doing - what did Emilia call it? Right! Sorry, am I trauma dumping?"

"No, you're fine." The twelve year old waved her hand dismissively. "Okay." Roxie leaned back. "Rosabelle and Adrienne, right? They seem nice."

"Yeah, Rosabelle's okay. I fucking hate Adrienne though. Well, hate is a strong word. I just do not get along with her very well. What about you? What's your relationship like with your brothers?" Olympia twirled one of her curls around her finger. "Not very good. I get along with Johnny sometimes, Nathan too, but thats really about it. Also Brandon sometimes. But they mostly just ignore me." She shrugged. "EJ and William...they are grade A assholes."

Olympia opened her mouth to say something more but was soon cut off by a man's voice. "Roxie, let's go. We're heading back to Mary's Field now. Say bye-bye to your new LA friend." Eddie groaned. He didn't recognize Olympia either. "Coming dad!" Roxie called and she stood up.

"Well, it was nice meeting you, Olympia."

The younger girl smiled. "Yeah, you too Roxie."

Before leaving, they exchanged numbers and that was the end of it.
