18. Raven Alistair

Hello there! :D

Sorry it took me so long again, real-life unfortunately doesn't wait for me, as much as I want it to. But since you've been so patient, we should start right away. Todays OC is submitted by @Rathilluser and yeah. Let's dive in!

(rules as always; scientific questions, bookscience, chronological order)

Fandom - Not from a fandom but my original work. The name is The God's Game. I'll link the book.

If you leave a comment people can just click on your profile, and search for said book. If I remember (and real life doesn't get me in its hunt for me (please send help)) I'll read it myself – but for now I'll read what you have to tell me about this character.

Name - Raven Alistair

First name is rather obvious, it's Raven (for all of you who need to read that again), but Alistair isn't as obvious, but it is of Scottish and (checks again)... Greek origin. I mean, ok, cool, but Scotland and Greece aren't necessarily neighbours? Like they are about 3645 km apart from each other (that's about 2265 miles for all of you who use freedom units as I like to call them). Where does that connection come from? Intercultural connections are really not bad usually, but where on earth did they get that name from? It will remain a mystery to me, unless someone who is very knowledgeable in linguistics and the history of names explains this to me very slowly, because my brain is not as functional as it should be. Probably at least.

So, where was I? Ah, yeah, the meaning of Alistair. It means "defender of the people".

Nickname – Seagull, Captain Rae

Oh, someone whose life plays at sea! I don't think I saw a character with this background so far, so very interesting!

Age - 23

Good, though I'd go a little older. Funfact: in order to start a training as a shipwright in the like 17th or 18th century you had to be 20 (or was it 21?) or older, because it was a job with rather high risk of injury and just because it was physically exhausting and if you were any younger you weren't allowed to start your training. (Don't ask me why I know that. (Or, ask me, it just might take a while for me to explain why I needed that information))

Gender - male

okidoki

Species - Human but a demigod in a sense?

Uh, ok interesting

One of his parent's ancestor was a legendary warrior who attained godhood

Oh, cool. Yeah I don't know a word for that either

Appearance –

183cm (I cant do that feet, inches sh*t)

Yeah you don't have to, I understand you nonetheless. Regardless of what measuring system is used, I always translate it with a converter (I literally google "Feet to meter" and I get the converter that is "build into" Google, so... yeah.) the only thing I can roughly translate without the internet is feet to meters (because that's easy enough for me), but as soon as it comes to inches I'm out lol

But aside from that, he's pretty much 6 ft tall

Black, neck length hair that is slightly curly. Usually wears it in a low tie.

He reminds me of one of my own OCs... but really good so far

Russet brown eyes

I think that's new, so yeah cool

Right eye had gone 'plop' at one point

... I mean that's one way to describe it

of the story so he wears a black eye patch over it.

I mean makes sense. May I ask under what circumstances he lost it? Because even though you said it like this, I don't think your eye physically can just fall out of your eye socket. Was it badly injured so it had to be surgically removed (assuming this can be safely done in your world)? Did he claw it out himself like Odin (yeah that story is a little gross)?

Usually wears all black

Because it's stylish, because he's emo, because he hates colours, or because of everything above?

Slightly tan skin

Assuming he spends most of his time at sea, I'd say he would be more than slightly tanned

Wears multiple rings and has ear piercings

Really cool, fits the overall (pirate?) aesthetic

Personality -

· Swears... a lot... like A LOT

Some say this is something he has in common with every sailor out there (at least if the stereotypes and stories are true). I can't tell you whether that's true, but it does sound very reasonable

· Has a temper more explosive than a tank of Butaney

And what exactly is Butaney? In my [two (2) minute] research I wasn't able to find anything, just Butane gas, which seems to be explosive, but since I didn't bother to look up what it is used for I'm exactly as smart as before.

But makes sense for his character I think

· Looks out for people... but aggressively

... why exactly am I thinking about his possible connections to human trafficking? I hope this isn't what you meant, but it does sound really suspicious to me

· Usually quite dumb until he is up to some sh*t. then he is the sharpest mind in the room

Is he an emo version of Captain (!) Jack Sparrow? (polite and constructive debates about Jacks IQ and overall intelligence may be started in the comment section about here ->)

· Is a king but really don't act like one

King in the sense that it's like "Go king!" or as in legitimate ruler of a country?

· Chaotic af

Yeah sounds like it

Flaws

· Can be very insensitive at times.

Oh, very interesting trait! Yeah, I can see that, makes sense, good choice!

· Runs away from his duties like they have covid

tEcHnIcAlLy you hide from Covid, because of lockdown, quarantine and what not, so I'd say he runs like [insert most feared creature/higher being of your choice] is chasing him

but then again, yeah makes sense

· He punches first and asks questions later

If this doesn't come up and creates problems in the story I will throw something

Disabilities

· Blind in one eye... as in doesn't have one eye

That of course makes sense

· Stupid

Being stupid isn't necessarily a disability. You have to be really stupid to let that count, and I don't think that's the case. Also that isn't very nice :(

Dislikes

· Wolfram Schulz (he is the best friend of his love interest)

He must be very insecure about himself and his chances of getting with them.

· Liars

Ok, that doesn't fit too well into the picture in my mind (I so far thought of a not-so-cunning, emo Jack Sparrow), but let's see where you go with that

· God

First: mood

Second: As I assume there is more than one god in your story (and one of his ancestors was/became one), which one?

· He has beef with literally everyone in the story except the protag and his brother

Wow.

...and why exactly is this in the Dislikes section?

Likes

· Wine

I won't promote over the top alcohol consumption, but I can say that it does fit with his character. Is he someone who gets drunk easily or handles it pretty well? To what point does he drink: Only very little, to being tipsy, being blackout drunk? What is he like when he's drunk? Angry drunk (be very careful around those!), sentimental drunk, tired drunk, happy drunk?

· The protag

As in friend or as in love interest?

· The sea

Typical pirate (I don't even know how I thought "pirate". He may be an honest captain of a merchant ship for all I know)

· Money

again, pirate or merchant?

Backstory (spoilerfree)

· Long story verry short he is an illegitimate child of the southern King who showed up to this heir selection battle and slaid 11 of his siblings and became the king.

Wow, that is a really short but really disturbing backstory. What happened to the old king, his dad? Did he kill him as well? How does he feel about murdering his siblings? Remorse? Anger? Nothing?

Family (spoiler free)

· 11 dead siblings (RIP)

That feels really inappropriate for some reason, just stating it like this. Maybe I'm getting too caught up in this, or maybe I'm too much of an empath. But may they rest in peace indeed.

· Aithan Alistair – his brother

One was spared? And he has a name? Woow. Also, Ravens parents really must have been busy if you know what I mean, like, thirteen children is no small number

· Adler Alistair – father

Another name with a bird meaning. Interesting, was that intended?

Friends

· No one really likes to be friends with him

Wow. I mean, he does seem like a dangerous guy if you get on his nerves, but wow.

· Protag..but he don't want to be friends with him. Is secretly plotting to marry him.

Who doesn't want to be friends with who? That's really unclear (at least to me, maybe I'm stupid lol). But here are all scenarios:

The protag is friends with Raven, but Raven doesn't want to be friends with the protag. Raven wants to marry the protag.

The protag is friends with Raven, but Raven doesn't want to be friends with the protag. The protag wants to marry Raven.

Raven is friends with the protag, but the protag doesn't want to be friends with Raven. Raven wants to marry the protag.

Raven is friends with the protag, but the protag doesn't want to be friends with Raven. The protag wants to marry Raven.

Which one of those is it? ^^'

Enemies

· At this point in the story... literally everyone has beef with him

Sometimes I wonder how he is still alive

Powers

· Speaks to a god

I mean technically everyone has the possibility of talking to a god. It's something else (or might not be) whether the god actually answers, but in itself, practices like this usually are referred to as  w o r s h i p  or  p r a y i n g

· Roasts are on par with nukes

I really hope this is metaphorical

So, we're through with this one!

I really have no idea where to place him. Outlaw, pirate, king (be it upright or not), merchant, I don't know. Whatever his job and his social status may be, he has strong Jack Sparrow vibes in my opinion, and this is not necessarily a bad thing. I'm not sure how the 'stupid' thing plays out, it really depends on how you use it in the story.

One thing I would change is his age (if it isn't too late for that, I mean your story is more than sixty chapters long as far as I know, big changes are... not necessarily risky but not easy to keep track of with timeline and everything).

He killed the bigger part of his family, lost an eye, likely has sailed for quite some time, and just judging by his character I would set his age in his older twenties at least, thirty would be better, just for not having his entire backstory crammed into like two years of his life. No doubt that can happen, life can be a b*tch sometimes, but in my (VERY SUBJECTIVE, I'M NOT BEING IRONIC) opinion, to make it more believable he should be five to ten years older.

Other than that, I don't have much commentary, just because his backstory and why he is like he is, is reduced to literally one sentence and doesn't give me much of a basis to rate him/his motivation. If he even has one.

But I assume this is all explained in your book, so I'll have to read it in order to understand everything. He gets 63 eyeballs out of 5 bags of emo clothing.

For his drawing I literally have no explaination for not having it done yet. My brain just basically said "lol no", even though I was kind of excited to get to draw a pirate/merchant/whatever.

assuming my brain gets its shit together and gives me enough motivation to draw him, I'll do that. I just wanted to get this chapter out, because the review itself has been finished for weeks now. I'm really sorry for taking so long.

I hope to welcome you back next time!

See you soon!

And here, have a biscuit 🍪 :D

(I would appreciate it if you would leave a comment and vote, maybe even share with your friends, so that this book hopefully gets seen by more people that help me advancing this :] )
