Candor grew up in fear of his father. There was hatred, bubbling just beneath the surface, but his fear overpowered any sort of violent outburst he could have mustered during his childhood. However, that changed when he discovered his magic, which bolstered him, gave him the courage to fight back against whoever it was that attempted to back him into a corner.

Subsequently, this is when his twisted personality first began to show itself, as well. Had Candor's magic never flourished, he may well have turned out closer to his Edolas counterpart.
